Trip Type Trip Type Group Tour Groups are between 25-60 people, typically ~30-40. Usually there will be many opportunities to split off and enjoy meals and excursions in smaller groups. This is the most economical way to travel, saving up to 40% versus booking the same itinerary yourself.
Small Group Tour Small groups are usually defined as between 10 and 24 travelers, often less. If you're the kind of person who enjoys more intimate experiences and personal service this is a good choice. All else being equal you will pay a premium for this style vs a larger group tour.
River Cruise These vessels are smaller than most ocean cruisers, limiting which amenties are available. Passenger counts can vary. One of the biggest advantages of a river cruise is the ability to dock at smaller ports and local villages.
Small Ship Cruise Small ship cruises usually have a max passenger count of 500. The primary purpose of these trips is to spend time off the vessel in local ports (e.g. Mediterranean) or experiencing nature (e.g Galapagos or Antarctica). Cabins can vary from budget to luxury.
Private Guided Private tours give you the undivided attention of a guide, and often involve special access to sites and unique experiences not available to larger groups. This is a great option for families, couples, and small friend groups. Expect to pay a bit more for the extra service.
Self Guided / Independent Tour A travel company plans your itinerary and arranges all the logistics including lodging, local activities, and transportantion. You have the flexibility of a solo trip while still getting the convience and time savings of expert planning. Get 90% of the benefits of a tour, without a guide.
Vacation / Holiday Package Similar to a self guided tour, this usually involves a home base, such as a hotel or resort, with packaged activities and day tours as a part of the stay.
Large Ship Cruise This is the "floating city" experience, with multiple ways to enjoy your vacation aboard the ship as much as on land. Ships are multiple floors, provide several activities, culinary, and shopping options. They often make fewer stops and have less time available for shore excursions.

  • Experiencing the unique and pristine beauty of the Uyuni salt flats (and snapping a few of those fun perspective-skewing photos)
  • Exporing the Madidi National Park
  • Checking another thing off your bucket list by seeing the stunning pink flamingos in Eduardo Avaroa Reserve.
  • Enjoying a multi-day pampas tour, where highlights beyond the flats include wildlife, multi-colored mountains, odd rock formations, brightly colored lagoons, geysers, and volcanoes
  • Riding a cable car over the mountain city of La Paz  for a spectacular view of the surrounding scenery.
  • Going historic sightseeing on your tour of of Bolivia, and exploring the ancient city of the Inca Empire, Tiwanaku.
  • Going on a breath-snatching mountain bike ride down the famous Yungas Road, sometimes called the Most Dangerous Road in the World. This snaking road clings to the cliffs of the mountains, with hairpin turns and blind spot after blind spot. It's harrowing, but a popular tourist activity for the spectacular views of beautiful valleys and crystal-clear rivers.
  • Venturing into the Bolivian jungle from the dusty little town of Rurrenabaque .
  • Taking a boat ride on Lake Titicaca to visit Uros Islands.

An unexpected tour hiccup pushed me onto the Chinchilla in a serendipitous turn of events that allowed me to discover the beauty and wonders of Lake Titicaca and the Uyuni Salt Flats. Whilst my original intent was to do the Inca Trail, the Chinchilla was not a lesser alternative, as all the usual bells and whistles of an Active trip were still in abundance, plus the bonus of the spectacular sights I saw instead. (I did manage to do an abbreviated Inca trail on my own, with Rainbow Mountain thrown in. Which led to this epiphany: the Jaguar and Chinchilla would make an incredible combination.) That said, I did find the Chinchilla less strenuous than the Jaguar (as described), and would have wanted a little more Active with the Adventure. In part, this was because the supplemental tour guides may not have gotten the memo, and failed to incorporate certain activities that were advertised (e.g., the hike to the highest point on Taquile Island didn't happen). There is a fair amount of travelling involved, shuttling from Cusco to Puno to Copacabana to La Paz, which could have been a factor, but I would have been perfectly happy to start earlier, as well, if it allowed for more activities.

Or in some instances, tweak the itinerary. I was underwhelmed by the visit to Isla de la Luna, as we spent considerably more time travelling on the boat, than on the island itself, and the ruins were not particularly interesting or impressive. I wonder if a visit to Isla del Sol would have been better, despite being overrun by tourists. Maybe from a cultural perspective?

And maybe a little less time in Copacabana. The climb up and the view from Calvary Hill redeemed this stop for me, but other than this, there wasn't much in terms of cultural interest. The scene by the lake shore was busy and frenetic, but the water was too cold for me to venture in.

Nevertheless, the trip was incredible. I was impressed and awed by the beauty of Peru and Bolivia. I tried to stay awake during the long drives because the scenery, from the mountains to Lake Titicaca, were almost always spectacular. And don't get me started on the Uyuni Salt Flats. Beyond words. And the Luna Salada Hotel was simply amazing. I couldn't believe we were staying there.

As with Active trips, the food is usually an attraction in itself, moreso in Peru. The restaurants in Cusco and Puno were stellar. But also dominated by tourists. I was always itching for the opportunity to try more authentic local cuisine in establishments that are popular with the residents. The smaller group size for this trip afforded us the opportunity to go off the tourist track on a number of occasions, which led to wonderful discoveries, as well. The chicharron I had in Puno was the best I had in South America, and the fast food chicken (Pollo Copacabana in La Paz) that our driver in Uyuni recommended was flavorful and delicious. Perhaps that's an option you may want to include in your future tours. Other travellers may not be as adventurous, but I would welcome alternatives if offered, even if it was on my own.

Finally, the guides. Wilson did an excellent job of shepherding our small group around, even if he was under the weather. He was quick to respond to our questions, as well as to accommodate our requests. He managed the logistics seamlessly, and provided guidance and direction, especially on what foods to try.

And a special shout out to Israel Villaroel and Juvenal of Sande Andino. They made the trip to the Uyuni Salt Flats truly spectacular. They knew the territory well, and brought us to the best spots for photographs or to admire the view, especially at sunset. Our day at the salt flats was hands down, the best of the whole trip.

All in all, another amazing trip.

I only did three days of the Chinchilla Trip but what I did do I thoroughly enjoyed. My main focus was Cuzco, the Inca Trail Hike and Machu Picchu so I had no real expectations for Puno & Lake Titicaca and I have to say that it was a real pleasure to tour this area. I just loved the people and culture. The Uros Floating Island was fascinating and totally unique. The culture on Taquile Island was intriguing and the homestay on Amantani Island was truly a lovely experience. To see people with few material items be so self-sufficient and happy made a real impression and has made me think differently about my needs & wants. I only wish I could have done the full Chincilla Tour.

Avanti Destinations is a HORRIBLE and dishonest company. Paul Barry(who is sole owner) along wtih executive team of COO Mark Grundy, CMO John Hanratty and CFO Susan Marra should be ashamed on how they run a company. As a military family we booked our trip to London to leave March 21, 2020. This was to be our FAMILY trip overseas. While C19 is not the fault of Avanti, it is Barry who is at fault. While other airlines and travel agencies are giving a 100% REFUND not just vouchers Avanti is holding our money hostage. Trying to work with anyone associated with this company does not response. How can USTOA stand behind this company? How do we get a FULL REFUND from Avanti? My travel agent sent us information and our of almost $7000.00 we would get back $1700.00. Seriously? We are PCSing to another country in Asia and want to travel. What is Avanti decides to file bankruptcy because Barry does not know how to manage clients money. SOMEONE HELP US!!!

I would love to write a review about our meticulously planned out trip, but as our $12000 week long trip to London and Dublin was cancelled due to a global pandemic, I cannot. This company has made it not just hard but nearly impossible to help out their customers who are in awful situations during this time. They are completely unwilling to budge on their bottom line even a little.

We had to cancel due to boarder/country closings and this company is trying to keep 100% of our money. We were booked to fly with British Airlines, and BA refunded $700 per person and that is all that this company has given us.

If by some miracle we get a representative on the phone they are condescending and degrading. I even spoke with the VP of the company and he was the worst. He made me feel small and unimportant. This whole company is taking advantage of the situation and unless people get lawyers involved they are completely unwilling to refund any money.

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! If something goes wrong on your trip, which let face it, multi country trips often have at least one thing go wrong, this company will NOT HELP! Do yourself a favor and go with someone else who has much better customer service and company values.
