Style Style Small Group Tour Small groups are usually defined as between 10 and 24 travelers, often less. If you're the kind of person who enjoys more intimate experiences and personal service this is a good choice. All else being equal you will pay a premium for this style vs a larger group tour.
Private Guided Private tours give you the undivided attention of a guide, and often involve special access to sites and unique experiences not available to larger groups. This is a great option for families, couples, and small friend groups. Expect to pay a bit more for the extra service.
Self Guided Tour A travel company plans your itinerary and arranges all the logistics including lodging, local activities, and transportantion. You have the flexibility of a solo trip while still getting the convience and time savings of expert planning. Get 90% of the benefits of a tour, without a guide.
Group Tour Groups are between 25-60 people, typically ~30-40. Usually there will be many opportunities to split off and enjoy meals and excursions in smaller groups. This is the most economical way to travel, saving up to 40% versus booking the same itinerary yourself.
River Cruise These vessels are smaller than most ocean cruisers, limiting which amenties are available. Passenger counts can vary. One of the biggest advantages of a river cruise is the ability to dock at smaller ports and local villages.
Small Ship Cruise Small ship cruises usually have a max passenger count of 500. The primary purpose of these trips is to spend time off the vessel in local ports (e.g. Mediterranean) or experiencing nature (e.g Galapagos or Antarctica). Cabins can vary from budget to luxury.
Large Ship Cruise This is the "floating city" experience, with multiple ways to enjoy your vacation aboard the ship as much as on land. Ships are multiple floors, provide several activities, culinary, and shopping options. They often make fewer stops and have less time available for shore excursions.
Retreats Similar to a self guided tour but staying in one location only with activities and day outings included as a part of the stay.

On this trip we have seen very beautiful parts of the country and the two young trip leaders worked very hard. However, my overall experience was below expectations. First of all, except for the first 3 days, we spent too much time on the bus. On many days the bus time is more than 5 hrs/day. I understand that due to the heavy rain in the week before our trip, part of the west coast road was closed and we would have to take another route. However, when this happens, subsequent arrangements should also be made so that alternative best option can be taken. No body briefed us about the alternative options. We were just being told what change would be made. Those changes in my view didn

Our trip was a little different because of the road closure, so it's hard to know how it would have been if everything went smoothly. The road closure to the glaciers ended up leaving with us with a lot of driving time in the van and that was less than ideal, but we understand there wasn't much that could have been done. Our group complained incessantly about the changes and that added a little difficulty to the enjoyment but our guides Alicia and Roisin did their best and they were amazing. Honestly, if we had known of the closure and the subsequent changes I'm not sure I would have done the trek because it was too much time in the van. All in all we tried to make the most of it. We probably wouldn't recommend it to anyone else the way it was for us, but all in all it was okay. We have a few specific suggestions...

About the food: It was okay...there were a couple of meals that were prepared by our guides that we were happy with, but we think its a bad idea to charge so much and have the food be mediocre at best. It's absolutely not the fault of the guides...they had their hands full during the day to say the least. We think it would be a good idea to either hire a dedicated cook for the group who cooks while the guides take care of their guiding responsibilities or just have us eat every meal out. It seems like too much to expect the guides to do so much with the group during the day and then expect them to prepare meals worthy of the amount charged. If you'd like specifics, we can address them in a separate email...we want to help, not complain.

Also, it might be good to outline just how much time is going to be spent sitting in a van because we had no idea. I know we were in the van way more than expected because of the change in itinerary but it might be nice to mention on the itinerary just how many van hours there are compared to hours outside. Some days were only allowed maybe 2 hours outside with the rest of the time in the van and that was not clear in advance. I think other members of our group also had different expectations and that created complications that expectations did not match reality.

Overall, with amount of time in the van and the quality of the food, we think the trip cost way more than it should. Despite our dissatisfaction the guides were amazing and we have no complaints with them...the trip in general just could be organized better or cost significantly less. The two guides made it all okay and were the reason we had a decent time.

Positive: The locations are fun and beautiful, but sadly it is 'getting there' that takes the joy away.

Negative: Spending up to 5 hours on a bus each day was never listed in the itinerary and was extremely frustrating and very disappointing to endure. Two participants in my group actually left the tour midway due to low expectations.

I loved seeing all the beautiful scenery, but the time spent on the bus each day was much longer than I anticipated. I didn't know that we would be hiking every day, as I thought there would be more different activities involved. For instance, we could have gone tubbing or stopped at the glow-worm caves.

This trip around the South Island was amazing! Dan and Brogan, our tour guides, were so knowledgable about everything you could imagine about the island. From native plants and animals, to culture, food, environment, and experiences, Dan and Brogan never fell short of fun and interesting facts.
Views were spectacular, food was pretty good (vegan options sometimes fell a little short when eating out, but when food was made by Brogan and Dan it was a strong 11/10), and hikes were really nice (I would rate this trip closer to a 2-3 level instead of a 3-4).
Active also did a really great job of planning in the face of unforeseen events; when there was a record breaking storm and the roads were flooded in all directions, we got evacuated by helicopter to our next destination and were right back on track to continue our trip.
This trip was amazing and I cant wait to come back to New Zealand!

The guides managed to keep calm and spirits up despite NZ enduring the worst weather for 25 years. The plans had to change several times, but we still managed to cover most of the itinerary. This is a long trip and the distances covered are large, so some days you're spending a lot of time on the bus.

Highlights were kayaking in Milford Sound which is worth the journey.
