What to Look For in South Africa Tour Reviews

Most trip reviews tend to focus on some or all of these 5 key areas, not all of which may be relevant to you: the tour guide, travel company, service level, country or countries traveled in, and the trip itinerary.

Remember, just because you see a 1 star review doesn’t necessarily mean that person disliked the country.

First, for a majority of travelers, the flight to South Africa is long. From many spots in the United States, you’ll spend near 21 hours each direction in the air. Australia and Asia experience similarly long flights. For travelers who find themselves having a layover, consider an overnight layover, where you can spend a night sleeping in a bed. This helps ease exhaustion, especially for those who can’t sleep on planes. You’ll arrive ready for your South African adventure.

There are some security issues when it comes to South Africa, which can be a shock for some travelers. Especially if you go to Johannesburg, you’ll feel the more “dangerous” sides just by being outside and driving through the city. This should not discourage you from traveling to South Africa!

Being prepared and knowing your surroundings, it can help immensely. Many homes have bars on the windows, and security guards, even in the higher end areas. Violence was a huge concern, and can still be, but don’t let this break your trip. There will be a shock but shortly after, travelers see this is just the way of life in South Africa.

Many travelers have mentioned South Africa as one of the best experiences of their life, which is no surprise. Between the ocean, the mountains, the wineries in the capelands, and the wildlife, it’s pretty hard to not enjoy yourself. There is surely something that everyone will enjoy. South Africa is filled with history, art, and great food. There are endless adventures, and the pace of life is very relaxed.

Many reviewers mentioned the safari. Some may say a day or two is enough for a safari. You can see these animals at the zoo. This is far from the truth. There are very few things that beat seeing a family of elephants strolling during sunrise, or watching the hippo crossings between dusk.

Looking in the brush for the lions trying to hide from the hot sun, and zebras running through the grass. All of it is amazing and every game drive is different. Every animal encounter is magical.

Another South Africa “hot spot” among reviewers is Cape Town with a side trip to the wine area, either Stellenbosch or Franschhoek. Stroll through the cute towns filled with restaurants, shops, and markets. Hop on the wine tram, that transports you between wineries in the region.

Consider a stay in a bed and breakfast. Transportation between wine country and Cape Town is about an hour, and there are numerous buses that leave each day between the two. While this is an easy day trip, you may want to consider staying overnight. The region makes for a great weekend trip!

I have been traveling with ACIS for years now and I love how stress-free each trip is for everyone. I always tell new travelers that all they have to do is show up! I've missed traveling and next summer will actually have THREE trips with them! I cannot wait!

My daughter and I paid for a trip for Europe trip for March 2020 Spring Break Week and due to Covid, it was postponed. March was when it all fell apart in the U.S. with Covid. Fast forward to today, our Europe trip was rescheduled for June 2021 and was cancelled /postponed since Europe is closed till after July? ACIS offered us refund with $1000 in the form of a voucher( enhanced refund policy). I understand the issue of having to reschedule, but why would you give me a voucher. My daughter graduated high school last week? WE can go in 2022 or 2023. Meanwhile you held $8000 for little bit more than a year, kept $2000 for a trip I don't want a voucher I said. They sent me a voucher. Why? The issue is not the cancellations, the issue is their business practices are just wrong. I have requested to speak to a manager, a supervisor but no one has called me. Instead I receive an email with the same beginning line, " I understand your frustration," I am out $2000. Covid is a unique situation and merits an exception. I am so disappointed in how this issue is being handled. I don't doubt that they provide an excellent travel experience however, I feel like ACIS has taken advantage of the situation. I have been victimized.

I have used ACIS for 8 of my nine overseas trips. They have listened to my requests and accommodated me without fail, offered private tour buses for my groups (usually we have about 25 students per group), and we have always had top notch hotels and food offerings at each location we have toured. The tour managers have been super knowledgeable, offered hints and suggestions whenever time permitted adding something in, and have been uniformly FANTASTIC!

Traveling with ACIS combines learning, adventure, and fun. We have had great experiences on all 14 student trips to England, France, Italy, Greece, Spain, Japan, and Australia. The tour managers know their way around each destination, teach us about the history and culture of each site, and they know how to have fun with my students. I also love the cultural activities that we do (making pizza, painting ceramics) that give my kids a chance to physically connect with the places we visit. When challenges come up, ACIS has my back. That's why I can't wait for our next trips to Italy and Iceland next year!

I have been using ACIS since 2014, and they are wonderful. Most recently, I was supposed to travel with a group of students in 2020, but the pandemic changed our plans. ACIS was on top of it, and gave us multiple options to adapt without any money lost. We rolled into a 2021 trip, only to find that our destination country was still closed as we were nearing the departure date. Again, ACIS came through for us, rolling us into an alternate trip that was just as exciting and educational as the one when had planned for, and again, no money was lost. They have really gone above and beyond to navigate the "new normal" and keep students traveling in the safest possible way. This is why I am loyal to ACIS. No matter what stumbling blocks life throws out there, ACIS is always prepared with a fantastic backup plan!

The true test of company's ethical… April 2021

The true test of company's ethical business practices comes when times are tough. Its been tough for the travel industry I realize but the business practices of ACIS are downright appalling.

I have twin daughters both booked on different European trips for last summer. Cancelled due to COVID and extended to this summer which also cancelled.

My one daughter decided in December 2020 to transfer her $200 trip deposit to her sisters trip. They demanded an additional $295 stating that was the minimum they could accept for the other trip. I reluctantly deposited the additional money. 2 months later I had to cancel and they kept $350 of the deposit. So crappy of them to force the deposit of additional funds then keep more than half less than 2 months later. Clearly they are hurting for money but not the way to handle it. its just a money grab.

In addition, when the teacher cancelled the entire trip, they took 30+ days to refund the money and then sent a check made out to my daughter. What a rigmarole to get the check deposited into the rightful account. This company could easily implement refunds via ACH and wouldn't cost them a dime. Although they wouldn't get the float of the funds for which they clearly are banking on. Such a poor business practice. They demand the client provide bank info to pull trip funds but then they send checks for refunds - that's warped !

When asked for their Presidents name and contact info - they refused - multiple times. They kept telling to email the general account and it would directed to the supervisor.
Why would they blatantly refuse to provide such basic info - the President needs to be aware of what's going on.

This company may lead nice trips but their business practices and customer service is sorely lacking.

I have written a similar email to our school board leadership to share my experience which seems to be the experience of many who Ive spoken with as well. Perhaps a new travel partner should be chosen that has a better appreciation for updated cash management and customer service

Our school has traveled with ACIS for over 20 years. We continue to use them because they understand the unique idea of "Educational Travel". They help our students understand the context where history happens and the culture that these places provide. They are professional, they love working with kids and they take care of the details so we can just enjoy and learn. I wouldn't travel with anyone else.

I have been teaching for 31 years and traveling with ACIS for 17. I did try other travel companies but none can even come close to ACIS. From start to finish, they are there to listen and support you. Preplanning is at YOUR leisure and they are prepared to customize trips and make suggestions based on what your participants want. I cannot say enough about the Tour Managers- professional, helpful, knowledgeable, kind and masters of managing. I have been to 8 countries with them and ignited travel fever in 176 participants. Some of them have returned as chaperones after graduating! ACIS treats their teachers well. They keep their programs fresh, cultural and are expanding more and more into sustainable tourism, service learning and leadership tours. I give ACIS an A+.

We had the most fantastic trip to Greece! Traveling in February to Athens, we met our tour manager and dove right into the itinerary. Our group consisted of 47 students and 5 chaperones. The ancient sites were breathtaking. All of our tour guides were knowledgeable and knew how to engage high school learners. Jeff, our tour manager, kept us moving but magically knew when it was time to take it a little easy. The accommodations were clean and comfortable and the food was unforgettable!! Jessica, our state side ACIS contact was extremely helpful throughout the entire organization process. Her enthusiasm always keeps me going. I cannot think that any aspect of the trip could have been better! Even the February Greek weather was great! It was warm and we had snow capped mountains in the background of our pictures.

I have been traveling with ACIS for years, and their reaction to traveling during the pandemic underlines the reason why. They have been extremely communicative, there was never a question of what the policies were, and what the deadlines were. In fact, they were extremely generous in their refund policies. In a time where they could have easily stuck to their written policies, they went above and beyond and led the industry in terms of balancing business and fairness. I continue to choose to travel with them because of these reasons and look forward to our Italia 2020 trip in 2022!

As we close the pandemic, I can't help but reflect on the trip that almost opened it! We traveled to Greece in late February with 47 students. We experienced the trip of a lifetime!! Powerful moments at historic sites mixed with wonderful moments along the way, this was a fantastic trip for our students as well as our staff! Safety was priority one and we soon learned upon our return why ACIS was talking so much about safety!

The sites were magnificent. The food and accommodations were excellent! Our tour manager took care of us from security gate to security gate and made sure we had a fantastic trip! On the States side, Jessica was such a great support. Her knowledge and care made sure we pulled this off!! Wow! We can't wait to return!!

I loved my Europe travel experience with ACIS and highly recommend them!
We took a middle school group to Italy for the first time and it was awesome! Our guide was so knowledgeable, organized and fun, the kids loved him!
Our program manger was helpful, encouraging, and flexible when some changes had to be made. She made arrangements to accommodate us, and get the best deal! We loved her too!
A great experience for the students, parents and us! I look forward to more ACIS adventures! Thank you!
