Day 3: MUSCAT

Discover the city of Muscat, seeing the fascinating fusion of old and new at the Royal Opera House Muscat. Constructed by the same team responsible for the Grand Mosque, it embodies a similar synergy of contemporary construction and time-honored tradition. Proceed to the Grand Mosque, constructed of Rajasthani sandstone, and the Muttrah souk, a traditional Omani market filled with frankincense, silver handicrafts and pashmina shawls. At the Bait Al Zubair Museum, see archaeological relics, clothing and jewelry that offer insight into Omani culture and history. After a brief stop across from the museum at the Al Alam Palace, return to your hotel, with time at leisure.

Day 4: JABAL AL AKHDAR

Depart Muscat for Barka, observing the vibrant colors at the Barka souk before touring the nearby fish market for a glimpse into this local trade. Continue along the Batinah plain, passing picturesque wadis to reach the oasis of Nakhl and the Nakhl fort. Built in pre-Islamic times to protect the area from invading tribes, the Nakhl fort is now home to a museum exhibiting traditional furniture, handicrafts and historic artifacts. Your journey continues to Wadi Bani Auf passing through scenic mountains. Pause for a walking tour of Bilad Sayt, a quaint Omani village with old world appeal. Explore its patchwork of terrace farming and traditional houses laid out against the rocky slopes. Pass by Al Hamra, a village characterized by its mud houses and date plantations. Continue to your hotel secluded among the mountains of Jabal Al Akhdar.

Day 5: JABAL AL AKHDAR

This morning, explore Jabal Al Akhdar (Green Mountain), a scenic vista perched some 6,500 feet above sea level atop Oman's spectacular Al Hajar Mountain Range. Famed for its terraced fruit orchards natural springs and aflaj (irrigation channels), Jabal Al Akhdar is home to a number of scenic villages overlooking dramatic peaks, gorges and wadis. Return to the hotel for an afternoon at leisure.

Day 6: WAHIBA SANDS

Explore Nizwa and its fort, a converted military stronghold with panoramic views of the ancient town and surrounding mountains. Then, proceed to the undulating red and white dunes of Wahiba Sands, taking note of the pretty villages that cling to the slopes of the rugged mountainside en route. Upon reaching camp, set out to discover the boundless dunes by 4x4 vehicle, continuing into the desert sunset by camel back. Your overnight camp is a romantic tented oasis set beneath the desert stars.

Day 7: WAHIBA SANDS

Depart overland to visit Wadi Bani Khalid, an oasis of shaded palms and natural pools. You may opt to take a dip in the clear, deep, cool waters. Then, continue overland and return to Muscat for an evening at leisure.
