Marrakesh & the High Atlas Mountains

Overview
Short Description
The maze-like souqs of Fez, the vast orange dunes of the Erg Chebbi, Berber nomads in the Sahara… On a tailor-made holiday to Morocco with Audley, you’ll see the highlights — and much more — your way. We’ll design your ideal trip with you, paying close attention to your interests, your travel style and your budget. Our Morocco specialists know the country inside out and can lead you to experiences you won’t find in a guidebook.
Taste Morocco’s spice-scented cuisine at a private cooking lesson in Marrakesh. Bargain for a hand-knotted wool rug while sipping sweet mint tea in a noisy medina. Hike among the ancient villages and winding tracks of the High Atlas Mountains. Unwind in the windy-swept port town of Essaouira. Watch the stars from a tented camp in the deep, echoing silence of the dessert.
The fortified kasbah of Ait Benhaddou. Roman ruins at Volubilis. The blue-washed village of Chefchaouen. What excites you? Travel at your own pace, in your own style, with the confidence that we’ll show you the best options, wherever you go.
Itinerary
Day 1 : Marrakesh
Today you begin your journey by boarding your international outbound flight to Marrakesh. Upon arrival into Marrakesh airport, you will be met by a private car and transferred to your hotel, where you're greeted with a mint tea. Once you've settled in, begin your exploration of Marrakesh. Depending on where you're staying, a short stroll or taxi ride will take you to the souqs, where you can browse the vast array of goods for sale, from piles of aromatic spices to leather handbags and traditional lanterns.
Day 2 : Marrakesh
Today your private guide leads you around the city, teaching you about its history and culture. You visit the beautifully mosaicked Saadien Tombs, where the bodies of sultans and their families have rested for centuries, the Bahia Palace and the 15th-century Mellah (Jewish Quarter). This afternoon, your guide takes you into the different quarters of the souq to see craftsmen working on their various trades. It provides a valuable insight into the skilled work that goes into making the products you barter for.
Day 3 : Marrakesh
Today you can explore Marrakesh independently, perhaps revisiting the souqs to barter for any goods that caught your eye on previous visits. We suggest taking time to visit the tranquil Majorelle Gardens, which provide a welcome contrast to the bustle of the medina. Here you can stroll among cacti, bamboo and gurgling streams, and visit the Berber Museum, which has a collection of items that once belonged to Berber tribes. This evening, head to the lively Djemaa El Fna to watch dancers perform for the crowds and sample some of Marrakesh's delicious - and often unusual, street food.
Day 4 : High Atlas Mountains
This morning you leave Marrakesh behind as you travel by private car into the rugged beauty of the High Atlas Mountains. After arriving at your accommodation in the peaceful foothills, relax and make use of the facilities, taking a dip in the pool or unwinding with a drink while enjoying the views. Alternatively, you may wish to begin to explore your surroundings, perhaps taking a walk through the green hills and valleys.
Day 5 : High Atlas Mountains
Today you may wish to visit a traditional Berber village, where you can share lunch and a mint tea with a local family while learning about their way of life. We recommend a visit to the Assafou Foundation, which provides free education to children living in these rural communities. You can visit the school where the children are taught and where local women learn skills such as weaving so that they can sell their handicrafts at local markets or in Marrakesh's souqs.
Day 6 : High Atlas Mountains
Another free day to explore the striking countryside of the High Atlas. There are lots of hiking trails you could explore with a guide, who can pick the most suitable options for your fitness level and interests. You may also like to visit one of the local villages to wander through the markets that are regularly held. People from rural villages far and wide travel to the markets to sell their wares or stock up on everything they need for the week, from food to clothes.
Day 7 : International return flight
Today your private driver transfers you back to Marrakesh International Airport in time for your onward flight. Your return flight will arrive the same day.
