  • Athens Sightseeing Tour (with Acropolis)

Short Description

Spend 7 nights exploring Athens and Crete, two of Greece's most popular destinations! Fly into Athens and dive straight into Grecian life. Get insider knowledge to two of Athens' top attractions, the Acropolis and Acropolis Museum, with an included half-day tour. You'll then have free time to explore on your own. Wander through charming Plaka or take in the excitement at Syntagma Square.

Hop on a fast flight from Athens to Crete, Greece's largest island known as the Great Island. From your base in Heraklion, Crete's largest city, explore Minoan palaces, wander through the old town of Chania and indulge in local delicacies to your heart's content. Dip your tours into pink sand beaches and watch golden sunsets over the Aegean Sea - what could be better?

Please note: While it's less crowded with tourists, November to March can be quiet on the Greek islands and not all establishments will be open during this time.

Itinerary

Day 1 Welcome to Athens!

Upon arrival you will be met at the airport and transferred to your Athens hotel. Settle in then hit the streets for a taste of the capital. Visit Plaka, the oldest district of Athens, located under the Acropolis or enjoy shopping on Ermou, Kolonaki and Voukourestiou streets.

Day 2 Athens

After breakfast, an expert guide will take you to Constitution Square (Syntagma), the House of Parliament, the Memorial to the Unknown Soldier and the National Library. On your way to the Acropolis, you will see Hadrian’s Arch, the Temple of Olympian Zeus and stop at the Panathenaic Stadium, where the first Modern Olympic Games were held in 1896.

Then visit the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum! After the tour, return to your hotel and spend the remainder of your day at leisure.

Day 3 Athens - Crete

In the morning, transfer to Athens Airport for your flight to Crete. Upon arrival, settle into your hotel then explore Greece's largest island known as the birthplace of the first advanced society on European soil.

Day 4 Crete

Begin your day in the stylish port town of Agios Nikolaos with its colorful blend of bars, traditional tavernas and upscale shops. The nearest beach at Kitroplatia is a lovely place to spend an hour or two.

In the afternoon, head to the Palace of Knossos, considered Europe's oldest city and the capital of Minoan Crete. Take a tour of the ruins (additional cost) and imagine life as it was in Crete 2000 years ago.

End your day with a sunset stroll in Rethymno, one of Crete’s most enchanting towns and home to authentic restaurants and lively nightlife.

Day 5 Crete

Begin your day at the pink sand beaches of Elafonisi and Balos in the southwest part of Crete. Like something out of a dream, these beaches get their exquisite color from tiny oysters called Foraminifera. The red shells are crushed in the sand, giving it a beautiful pink hue.

After restful time at the beach, head to Chania Old Town with its remnants of Venetian and Turkish architecture. Stroll the charming narrow streets and pop into storefronts for authentic souvenirs. With a university and a modern part of the city, Chania retains its lively charm all year long.

End your day back in Agios Nikolaos with a glass of wine overlooking the beautifully illuminated port.

Day 6 Crete

It's your last day in Crete! See Minoan artifacts at the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion, or return to Chania or Rethymno.

You might also want to check out the Samaria Gorge in western Crete, a favorite among hikers. Follow the trail running along the gorge, beginning at Xyloskalo just south of Omalos and ending in the coastal village of Agia Roumeli.

Celebrate your last night in Crete with a meal of Cretan cheese, seafood and raki, a liquor distilled from grapes.

Day 7 Crete - Athens

Today you will transfer to the airport in Crete for your flight back to Athens. Upon your return to the capital, continue exploring its fascinating nooks and crannies that you may have missed the first time around.

Day 8 Depart Greece

It's time to say goodbye to Greece. You'll be transferred to Athens International Airport for your flight home.

There were six of us all traveling together which I had made clear when I called GVV. Our tour did not include transfers, which was not made known to us. Can you imagine 6 old ladies winding up in a foreign country trying to find out how to get to their hotels, train stations, etc., what a disaster! You also had us traveling on different times on the trains between cities which was not brought to our attention and was a disaster.

I hate to give bad reviews, but if this review will help in better customer service, it’s worth a try.

Booking travel deals online can be hectic because you don’t have a direct contact person. You call a 800- number if there is a issue and you get who you get.
I had an issue with my PNR number not working when it was time to
Check in for the plane and because it took me almost 2 hours when I finally got checked in, we were the last seats on the very back of the airplane. Well you deal with it because you’re going to Hawaii.. just happy to have a seat.it was frustrating calling the airlines and I was directed back to Great Value ..
We got that issue resolved.
Now we get to the hotel and was told the daily resort fee was double the amount that we were quoted.
The quote we were given verbally over the phone was $29.98 and when we got to the resort it was 59.98 . It wasn’t a issue with the price , it’s the inconsistency of getting the correct info when you call and it’s not explained thoroughly in the paper work, and hotels aren’t to kind when you book thru 3rd party contracts. It appears everything is a good price but you are on the bottom of the totem pole for everything .. plane rides .. very last group and seat , back of the hotel airport bag fees.. not so sure this was a great value and no one cares after they get your money . I’m still waiting for a Manager to call me back and my vacation is over

Overall, this was a very nice trip. The hotels were all good quality and the train departure times were good. My only complaint was that while the hotel in Budapest was very nice, it was pretty far from all the sites we wanted to visit. The other hotels were in good locations. The value of the package was excellent.
