Short Description

Alaska may be part of the USA, but it feels like another world. Discover incredible mountain ranges, diverse wildlife and shining glaciers on a nine-day Lonely Planet Experience in the coldest and iciest state of the USA. Go deep into the wild through the isolated Denali and Wrangell-St Elias national parks, then reunite with civilisation with stops in Anchorage and Valdez. Look out for moose, caribou and grizzly bears on an Alaskan safari and take a kayak trip past waterfalls and sea life. This active adventure takes you well off the beaten track, so escape from the world and explore the deep wilderness of Alaska.

Small groups are usually defined as between 10 and 24 travelers, often less. If you're the kind of person who enjoys more intimate experiences and personal service this is a good choice. All else being equal you will pay a premium for this style vs a larger group tour.

Itinerary

Day 1 Anchorage

Welcome to Anchorage, the most populous city in Alaska with one of the most beautiful backdrops you’ve ever seen! Things kick off this evening with a welcome meeting at 6 pm, but we highly recommend arriving early to see the sights. This is a unique environment; a city in the heart of the wilderness. It's worth spending some time in the cafes and bars and getting to know the hardy locals who have more than a few entertaining stories up their sleeves. After you meet your fellow travellers and leader in the evening, why not join them in town for an optional group dinner.

Day 2 Denali National Park

Leave the city behind this morning and venture into a world of lakes and glaciers in the epic Alaska Range. Head north along the Parks Highway to Denali National Park (approximately 5 hours), keeping an eye out for caribou as you go. Home to the highest peak in the United States known as Denali (Mount McKinley), as well as grizzly bears, wolves, moose and Dall sheep, this national park is a true wilderness with endless snowy peaks.

Day 3 Denali National Park

Buckle up for an 8-hour bus safari deep into Denali National Park, visiting the Eielson Visitor Centre as you go. This scenic tour will take you through the park's backcountry, travelling 106 kilometres (66 miles) to the visitor centre. The journey is worth it as the rangers and interactive displays provide great insight and information about the park. The bus driver will help you spot wildlife while answering questions and, if needed, make bathroom stops along the way. Be sure to bring some food and beverages with you as there aren't any available on the bus.

Day 4 Maclaren River

After experiencing a Denali dog sled demonstration this morning, traverse through high alpine country as you drive Alaska's second-highest highway pass to the Maclaren River Lodge. Kick back with some music and take in the scenery, getting to know your travel buddies along the way. On arrival at the lodge, take a canoe upriver to the remote wilderness Glacier Camp, where you'll spend the night camping out beneath the stars. Explore the frosty surrounds once the campsite is set up.

Day 5 Wrangell-St Elias National Park

Wake from your peaceful slumber and take a canoe back to the lodge in the morning. Today is a big travel day, with approximately 8 hours total driving time, but it's also a really beautiful drive with plenty of wildlife and some great views along the way. You'll leave the main highway and start to head deep into Wrangell-St Elias National Park: the largest national park in the USA, being almost six times the size of Yellowstone. The evening is free once you've arrived at the campsite, so take a hike and do some exploring, or just kick back and soak up the camp vibes.

Day 6 Wrangell-St Elias National Park

You’re free to explore Wrangell-St Elias National Park today, and there are a whole host of optional activities to take part in. Perhaps take a scenic flight over the park, venture out for a glacier walk on the spectacular Root Glacier, or maybe try your hand at some adrenaline-pumping ice climbing. Your group leader will be able to provide you with other recommendations for the day. Alternatively, spend the day hiking and exploring the park – all 13 million acres of it. Keep an eye out for moose, bears and caribou and then, in the evening, return to the campsite for some much-needed (and well-earned) rest.

Day 7 Valdez

Depart Wrangell-St Elias and make tracks for Valdez, a small town on the edge of Prince William Sound. The trip should take approximately 7.5 hours, including a stop at Worthington Glacier en route. Valdez, which is surrounded by the steep, snow-capped Chugach Mountains, is best known as the southern terminus of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. After setting up camp, why not check out the town and grab a bite to eat?

Day 8 Valdez

Today is free to do as you please in Valdez. Kayaking is hugely popular here, so take a paddle on Prince William Sound among the glaciers and down the fjords, spotting some wildlife along the way. On land, you could visit the Valdez Museum and Historical Archive for an interesting history lesson of this important port city. Just like Anchorage, Valdez is framed with mountains, so wherever you look, there’s something new to see.

Day 9 Anchorage

This morning drive back to Anchorage, which will take around 6 hours. This may be a tiring drive, but it's also a spectacular one as you cross the snowy Thompson Pass. After the journey, there are no activities planned and no accommodation provided for the night.

I had such an amazing experience travelling through Alaska with Intrepid! Due to the remoteness of the amazing wildlife and scenic views, I highly recommend taking the camping trip as it will allow you to capture the WHOLE of Alaska in such a short period of time. From someone who has never camped before, camping in remote Alaska is way easier than you think. Definitely bring your camera and be aware of the many drop toilets!

I first used intrepid 2016 and was really impressed,so I used them every year until the pandemic hit. I decided to go on their north south Island tour my travel agent told them I am exempt from wearing a mask they said no problem. Airlines want a doctors letter which they are not providing it tells you this in the government guide lines, so I had no choice but to cancel they will only refund me half the money in a voucher my travel agent spoke to them on several occasions but they won't budge. I have emailed and written but they won't reply. I am shocked and upset I really thought this company was different. They told the travel agent they can sell the voucher so no care for loyal customers. I won't be fooled again.

Intrepid doing "bait & switch" with hotels?

Bored during my lockdown - i reviewed my fantastic trip to Morocco back in late 2019. It was "comfort" style and worked out really well, perfect in every respect, however i cant help feeling Intrepid did some "bait and switch" on the hotels. Although Intrepid does cover themselves by saying "or similar" when advising the hotels you will be staying at, after review i discovered 8 of 11 hotels were switched. And here is the thing - they were ALL switched to cheaper quality hotels. I'm not saying switched hotels were horrible, just saying its beyond "or similar" when majority of hotels were of cheaper standard when i google and compare the hotels. I also understand that not all hotels advertised may be available, but very suspicious 8 of 11 were substituted downward, none upward. If Intrepid are downgrading guests to cheaper hotels they should also pass on some of these $$$$ savings to the guest, maybe a voucher for future trips or perhaps shout a free dinner as compensation. This would provide transparency and result in more guest appreciating this honesty - rather than feeling a bit gouged. It also took 1 star off the rating i really wanted to give Intrepid. I'll will still consider Intrepid for my next trip, but now also looking at other companies that offer "comfort style" trips.
And in comes Intrepid response very promptly, thanks Intrepid. I think you have missed the mark with that "generic" response. I never said I was unhappy with the alternative hotels. I truly loved the trip and could write paragraphs on how enjoyable it was.
I was offering Intrepid constructive ideas and the opportunity to address situation where a customer feels they have been "bait and switched" and not compensated. Instead, Intrepid chose to challenge the way customers should feel, rather than acknowledge events that can cause customer angst.
I cant wait until we can all travel again. Ihave 2 x Intrepid "comfort" trips on my hit list - but if i get "bait & switched" for majority of hotels again ( with zero compensation) - I promise I will be back on Trustpilot to tell others of experience. My 2019 Morocco trip was booked through Flight Centre if it helps to locate me if you NEED.
Good advise from my grandad - you get just as much "free" business from repeat customers and word of mouth vs costly advertising. Never abuse the former.

It is actually funny how Intrepid going on and on about 'helping the community' and doing the right thing and then keeping travellers money when their customers needed it most. Keeping customers money saying its a 'hidden cost' and not being able to even explain what these 'hidden costs' are. is 'helping the community' all about your marketing? You don't mean it! If you mean it, give all our money back. How come you have spent any money on anything when the trip has not even started and it is cancelled months and months in advance. so what are those 'hidden costs'?

Guides

Your Intrepid group leader’s role involves organising the overall operation and smooth-running of the trip, managing trip logistics and camp responsibilities. They will work to make the trip as safe and enjoyable as possible for all travellers. Intrepid's North American trips are built around the co-operation and participation of all the group members under the supervision of the group leader. On our camping trips, your leader will show the group how to set up and use the camp equipment, and form work groups to take turns cooking, cleaning and shopping. Everyone is expected participate and carry their share of the workload, making camp chores easier. If the whole group participates it will be quicker, easier and more fun. Your leader will provide basic information about the sights and cities you'll be visiting but please note that our leaders are not 'tour guides' in the traditional sense. They are adventure travel specialists and are there to organise your trip, arrange activities and help with questions or problems you may have while on your tour. Your leader will provide you with all the important information you need to embark on your own explorations. They are also responsible for driving the van and navigating across the country. The allowable driving times for drivers is strictly controlled in North America. This ensures our drivers are well rested and are not over-tired from too many hours on the roads. While your group will have a minivan for all included activities on the trip, please note that the services of the van and the driver may not be available for your use during free time, or after you have arrived for the day. If you need a special trip into town you may need to arrange transport or a taxi. We endeavour to provide the services of an experienced leader however, situations may arise where your leader is new to a particular region or training other group leaders. It's strictly forbidden for non-qualified rangers to present any information about some National Parks in North America, therefore we adopt a system (as requested by the park rangers) where our leader will encourage travellers to visit the information centres in the National Parks for details about the site.
