  • Travel with a small group of 16 in a custom built 4WD
  • Get off the beaten track in a region that no other travel companies go

Short Description

Cairns’ tropical coastline and the dusty expanses of the Red Centre might be two of Australia’s most visited traveller attractions, but very few ever make the journey between them by road. For most, the distance is just too long, the roads are a bit too rough and the stop-offs en route too lacking in renown. For others, these factors are precisely what excite. Post getting your fix of tropical splendour in Cairns and the Atherton Tableland, hit the road west for tastes of genuine Outback culture at such little-known outposts as Hughenden, Winton, Porcupine Creek and Boulia. Get to know Alice Springs under your own steam, then spend a few days exploring by foot the boulders, gullies, canyons, chasms, ridges and ravines of Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon (Watarrka National Park). This off-road adventure is for travellers wanting to know Australia both through and beyond its big name attractions.

Itinerary

Day 1 Cairns to Hughenden

You will be collected from your Cairns accommodation for an early start and drive to Hughenden. Visit the beautiful Atherton Tablelands and visit Millstream Falls. Stop at the smallest pub in Australia at Lynd Junction. Visit the cliffs of coloured sandstone, vine forest and deep permanent waterholes along Porcupine Creek contrast strikingly with the savanna plains surrounding Porcupine Gorge. Accommodation at Hughenden. Note: Total driving time takes around six and a half hours. Total walking time is approximately three hours.

Day 2 Hughenden to Boulia

You’ll notice the scenery quickly starts to change the further west you go; the greenery of the bush giving way to the vast, rest dust horizons of the Outback. Pass through the town of Winton – birthplace of QANTAS and Banjo Patterson’s Waltzing Mathilda – for a night spent in Boulia, rumoured hotspot of the mysterious Min Min Lights. Note: Total driving time takes around six hours.

Day 3 Boulia to Jervois Station

View spectacular scenery as we make our way through some of the most remote country in the world! Crossing from Queensland into the Northern Territory, our track is mostly dirt road between Boulia and Alice Springs and is one of the most remote tracks in the world! Enjoy a night camping under the stars at Jervois Station.

Day 4 Jervois Station to Alice Springs

Arrive in Alice Springs before lunch to enjoy an afternoon to relax in Central Australia’s most iconic town, Alice Springs. A great opportunity to visit the Royal Flying Doctor Service, the Reptile Centre and many other attractions. (Entry fees not included).

Day 5 Alice Springs to Uluru (Ayers Rock)

For those keen to experience the outback from a different perspective, this morning offers the chance to call in at a working camel farm and clamber up for a ride (Please note that this is an optional activity at own expense). Break for lunch in Yulara (our permanent campsite for tonight); then head out on a guided walking tour through the colossal rock forms of Kata Tjuta. As the sun starts to set, charge a glass of sparkling to one epic Uluru sunset. While you’re soaking up the spectacle, your tour host will be readying dinner for your arrival back at camp. Note: Total driving time takes around five hours. Total walking time is approximately three hours.

Day 6 Kata Tjuta to Kings Canyon

Rise and shine folks, this is one sunrise you’d really regret missing. After watching day break over the world’s largest slab of sandstone, enjoy an unguided walk around Uluru’s base minus the day-trippers. Get to know Uluru – and hear about the traditions and beliefs of the region’s traditional custodians during a cultural interpretive walk led by an Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander guide. There’ll also be time to admire the arts and crafts of the First Peoples of Australia at the onsite Cultural Centre before driving into our exclusive campsite in Kings Canyon (Watarrka National Park). Note: Total driving time today is around three and a half hours. Total walking time is approximately two hours.

Day 7 Kings Canyon to Alice Springs

Enter a Lost City, tour a Garden of Eden and test the acoustics of an all-natural Amphitheatre during a guided 6km hike through Kings Canyon. Watarrka National Park is one extremely photogenic place, so don’t forget the camera. At trek’s end it’s time for a bite to eat before the drive back to Alice, where your Reef to Rock adventure winds up. Notes: Total driving time is approximately four and a half hours. Total walking time is around an hour.

INTREPID is a company I use regularly as a vehicle for exploring the world and my most recent edifying experience was a 12 day visit to Egypt. The itinerary covered Cairo, Luxor and Aswan by road, rail and a boat on the Nile. Egypt is a country rich in history and unique landscapes and this trip provided an opportunity to feel immersed in a way that wilĺ leave an indelible memory of the vistas and unique artefacts. In addition interaction with local people and an excellent Egyptian guide made the experience interactive so that I gained an intimate experience of the country that more circumscribed trips cannot provide.

I recently travelled on a Premium Intrepid trip to Uzbekistan. I was pleasantly surprised by the comfort level of the accommodation. It was a wonderful trip with like minded travellers from different parts of the world. Our guide Lorba was passionate about sharing the history of her country and religion. She was also skilled at reading the mood of the group and adjusting our itinerary as necessary.
I was excited to visit a country on the Silk Road and it exceeded my expectations.

I chose to use Intrepid due to a highly positive recommendation by a friend's wife who used them years ago.
My destination was Egypt, but they also handled my flights to Botswana prior to the tour as well.
All flights went like clockwork and the tour was terrific.
The sites were amazing, but our guide's affable demeanor and extensive knowledge ensured that every step of the way was both educational and enjoyable. Moreover, he extended his support beyond the tour, tracking our well-being until we safely returned to our respective countries which added an extra layer of depth to the journey.
I will be most definitely be using Intrepid again and can highly recommend.

My review would be five stars plus except for the poison apples

My review would be five stars plus, except for the failure to warn travelers in a timely manner about the poison apple trees, which I stood under barefooted for ten minutes and which cause a quick and painful death in the consumption of even a single tiny apple...
The certified guide in the Galapagos on day two of our trip told me that recently a tourist couple without permits ate the apples and quickly died a painful death..so Intrepid needs to warn its customers that even touching the apple or the tree itself triggers a painful rash or worse...

First Intrepid Madagascar tour of 2023--and it was fantastic! Wonderful guide (Bruno), lots of lemurs and hiking and incredible landscapes. Started on the beach with sailing in a pirogue (and starfish diving), baobab arboretums, plus a hike through rice fields, lunches hosted by local villagers, visit to silk weavers and paper-making workshop and aluminum casters and marquetry crafters.... what didn't we do in 2 weeks?! Eye-opening experiences, in one of the last pristinely natural places on earth.

This trip was amazing. I had been looking forward to it for almost 3 years, and it exceeded my expectations! Vietnam is an incredible country, and this trip gave me a hunger to come back for more. Our guide, Thán, was wonderful. He couldn't do enough for us and was always 'on the clock'. Very knowledgeable and passionate about his job. This was an amazing, unforgettable experience.

Guides

All Intrepid group trips are accompanied by a group leader. In Australia your group leader is also your driver, taking you from start to finish in a specialised vehicle. The aim of the group leader is to take the hassle out of your travels and to help you have the best trip possible. They will provide information on the places you are travelling through, offer suggestions for things to do and see, and will also introduce you to our local friends along the way. While not being guides in the traditional sense you can expect them to have a broad general knowledge of the areas visited on the trip, including historical, environmental, cultural and social aspects.
