Itinerary

Day 1 Hobart / Port Arthur

Welcome to Tasmania! Your walking adventure begins in Hobart (nipaluna in the language of the muwinina and palawa peoples, who are the traditional owners of the land on which Hobart is now located). Meet your local leader and travel companions for a 9:30am welcome meeting and pick up something tasty to have later for lunch. Take a short walk to ningina tunapri - TMAG's Tasmanian Aboriginal culture gallery - to start our journey off by connecting to the Traditional Owners of Tasmania. Then say goodbye to Hobart and make tracks for the historic village of Port Arthur. On arrival, learn more about Port Arthur’s history as a former penal colony on a visit to the historic site.

Day 2 Tasman Peninsula / Port Arthur

Fuel up for the day ahead with breakfast at your accommodation, then drive to the trailhead of the Cape Raoul track. Follow the trail away from the coast through heathland which eventually gives way to views of the showstopping dolerite cliffs of the Tasman National Park. Walk along a plateau alive with yellow-flecked coastal scrub as glimpses of Mt Brown, Arthurs Peak, Mt Fortescue and the soaring cliffs of Cape Pillar are revealed to you. Finally, you’ll come upon the dramatic and jagged spires of Cape Raoul, an unusual and fascinating sight. Pause for a picnic lunch at a scenic spot along the track, then head back along the same path before returning to Port Arthur for an evening at leisure.

Day 3 Tasman Peninsula / Port Arthur

Jutting into the Tasman Sea, the dolerite columns and sea stacks of Cape Hauy are really something special. Head out to explore this unique landscape today, setting out after breakfast to the walking track’s trailhead. First walk through delightful woodland and heath, dotted with colourful wildflowers, then descend towards the cape along a steep set of stone steps. Stop en route for a picnic lunch and take the opportunity to admire your incredible surroundings. Continue along to Cape Hauy and feel like you’re on the edge of the earth as wild waves crash into the striking dolerite formations. Once you’ve had your fill of stunning scenery, return the way you came and head back to Port Arthur for an evening at leisure. Perhaps use the opportunity to uncover the village’s spooky past during an after dark tour.

Day 4 Tasman Peninsula / Hobart

This morning it’s time to stretch your legs and head out on your final walk. Visit the aptly named Remarkable Cave which impresses with its sea-carved sandstone tunnels, then head to Fortescue Bay. Begin your walk by strolling the beautiful white sands of the bay before crossing a rocky headland sheltered Canoe Bay. Look out for Little Penguins that live between the boulders. Return the same way after a picnic lunch. On your way back to Hobart we'll stop to visit Waterfall Bay, Tasman Arch and Tessellated Pavement. Arrival back into Hobart will be around 5pm, at which point your adventure will come to an end.

This review is for the company Intrepid. first, don't pay for extra on your trip, they charge more than double of what the local cost, example, we paid 85 USdollars each for a hotel room, when we arrived the hotel was a 2 star hotel, with the cost for 40 USD, for more than 50% higher, no chance of getting that cost down. we paid for airport pickup, they forgot us, we called the contact and were hung up on. we were charged 250 usd more then if we had paid the actual company for a balloon ride, all in all we paid almost 600 usd more because we booked through intrepid travel. All hotel/camping grounds are subpar. Suggest that you not choose Intripid/ I'll not do this company in the future.

Fantastic! Would have been 5 star, but last hotel was mediocre (Ramada encore). All other hotels were great, everything well organised. Without doubt our guide Binh was the best thing of all. He never stopped working and nothing was too much trouble. He had a great knowledge and a good sense of humour.
Will definitely be booking with intrepid again.

Booked a 'trip of a lifetime' with Intrepid to NZ, having worked throughout Covid in a public facing role.
The booking was made a year in advance - during which we received information about the trip and Intrepid took our money.
Three weeks before the trip we were informed our trip had been cancelled. The explanation given by Intrepid was the NZ local operator (Haka tours) had failed to include us on their attendance list and the tour was now full. The blame was squarely placed with Haka tours.

We managed, with the assistance of our excellent travel agent, to book a self drive holiday. However the whole experience was extremely stressful.

When we arrived in NZ it soon became known to us that Intrepid actually own Haka tours - so the reason given for cancellation was a deliberate attempt to deceive us. Intrepid have done nothing of any use to assist us and I would strongly advise that you do NOT book with them. They are not to be trusted and clearly do not value their customers.

Although Intrepid did not rectify the problem during the trip, customer service was proactive and continued to communicate until the matter was resolved. I appreciated that.

Brilliant local tour leader with lots of knowledge and recommendations, local guides who share their great knowledge and insights when visiting a village/palace/temple/fort/etc, small group tours of often like-minded people so you connect very easily with your fellow travellers, authentic and fun experiences (for example street foodie tour by auto rickshaws or tuk-tuks), all the logistics of travelling is taking care of making it so much easier and efficient compared to when you would had to arrange it yourself.
