Short Description
Discover Chiang Mai – the ‘Rose of the North’. Bangkok’s smaller and more serene counterpart is located in the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains. A short but stunning drive from here takes you to the Hmong Hillside Lodge, where you’ll discover their culture and cuisine. Then you’ll head back to Chiang Mai, stopping on the way to visit the renowned temple complex of Doi Suthep. Independent Experiences Independent travel, without the stress. Peregrine’s Independent Experiences are a range of short ‘mini tours’ that you can add to other Experiences or as an extension to a longer tour, to craft your perfect holiday itinerary. Independent Experiences are for 1-3 travellers, come accompanied by a local Peregrine guide and depart daily. TRIP CHANGES FOR 2016: Following the death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej a 1 year mourning period has been declared in Thailand. In the first 30 days all government offices will fly the Thai flag at half-mast and there will likely be restrictions on the opening hours or selling of alcohol at entertainment venues including pubs and clubs. If your trip is before mid-January 2017 and includes a visit to the Grand Palace, this activity will be replaced with an alternative as the Palace will be closed to tourists while people from all over Thailand pay their respects to the King. Your leader will discuss this and any other changes with you at the Group Meeting on Day 1. As this is an emotional time for Thailand and its people we ask that our travellers wear dark coloured clothing over the next 30 days as a mark of respect to the much loved King.

Day 1 Chiang Mai
Your Independent Experience starts today in Chiang Mai with an arrival transfer. Meet your guide at your accommodation and get some tips on how to spend your first day exploring and the best place for dinner. Chang Mai is a vibrant city situated in northern Thailand. It is awash with famous temples and quaint cafes, and is known as one of the friendliest cities in the country.
Day 2 H'mong Hilltribe
Today you will take part in a local cooking class and discover the secrets of aromatic Thai cuisine. You'll learn everything from the key ingredients, to how to use them and what to use in their place if you can’t get them at home. As well as taking your own comprehensive recipe book with you after the class, you'll feast on the fruits of your labour for lunch. You will then drive through the picturesque, undulating countryside to reach the H’Mong Hilltribe Lodge. The H’mong are an ethnic minority in Thailand. They originated in the south of China and today make up the second largest hilltribe group. After a barbeque dinner in the lodge's open-air dining area, the day concludes with a cultural performance by the Hmong people. You'll gain an insight into the traditional lifestyle of the tribe, with a wedding ceremony enactment, shamanic ritual and makong (cotton ball) throwing.
Day 3 Chiang Mai
This morning, soak up the breathtaking landscape and peaceful atmosphere of the Hmong Lo before you return to Chiang Mai. In the afternoon, embark on a scenic, winding drive up a mountain (around 45 minutes) to one of the country's most stunning temple complexes, Doi Suthep. A 300-step naga-guarded stairway leads you to the temples, and the climb is well worth the effort. The hypnotic atmosphere of chanting Buddhist monks and sweeping views of the city make this a most memorable experience. Enjoy some free time on your final evening in the city. Maybe wander through the night markets later on and sample the abundant delicious street food.
Day 4 Chiang Mai
Your Chiang Mai adventure ends today after breakfast. There are no activities planned until your included departure transfer to the airport or train station. Additional accommodation is available to extend your stay, or you might like to add on another of our Independent Experiences or an Urban Adventure in Thailand or South East Asia.

Expect I'm not the only one
I did not receive so much as an email advising of changes in the cancellation policy, discovered when I contacted them to cancel.
I now receive automated emails/msgs as I attempt to work through this.
The email states I may contact them on 31 July to discuss the matter!....4 months away.
I'm absolutely stunned by how shoddy this outfit is....who knew?!
Out of pocket $4000.
Expect I'm not the only one.

was an absolute pleasure
We recently completed the Jewels of Sri Lanka tour starting on 22 December 2019.
Our adventure in Sri Lanka with Peregrine tours was an absolute pleasure. Our guide Opasiri (Siri) apart from being knowledgeable and articulate in all aspects of his country and it’s history was also a genuinely nice bloke.
His helpfulness and sincere want to ensure all his guests on the tour were accommodated was a credit to him. He continually bent over backwards to ensure everyone had the best possible experience.
At this point we would like to say a personal Thankyou to Siri for making our stay in Sri Lanka a treasured memory.
All our destination points were of immense interest, either in religious, cultural or environmental aspects. We found the Sri Lankan people to be friendly, open and hospitable.
Highlights included seeing leopards in the wild, visiting Buddhist temples that are centuries old with such well preserved artefacts, ancient kingdoms, a beautiful train ride through the countryside and of course the amazing scenery of the central highlands.
Our recommendation for anyone wanting to explore Sri Lanka as we did is to go with Peregrine as you will not be disappointed. The hotel accommodation on all our overnight stays was to an excellent standard, the food is without question a gastronomic delight, with local “Lion” beer to an international standard.
A big istuti (thank you) Peregrine, Siri and his crew for giving us a wonderful and unforgettable Sri Lankan experience, we will be back.

Guides
Independent Experiences This is an ‘independent’ tour. You’ll have a Peregrine guide for each Experience (but not while on transport between each Experience if you booked several). As the name suggests, this is not a group tour, so it is just you (and your travelling companions if you booked with a friend). You will have 24/7 support from your guide and our local office. It’s up to you if you dine with your guide in the evening – they’re available if you wish.
