Style Style Small Group Tour Small groups are usually defined as between 10 and 24 travelers, often less. If you're the kind of person who enjoys more intimate experiences and personal service this is a good choice. All else being equal you will pay a premium for this style vs a larger group tour.
Private Guided Private tours give you the undivided attention of a guide, and often involve special access to sites and unique experiences not available to larger groups. This is a great option for families, couples, and small friend groups. Expect to pay a bit more for the extra service.
Self Guided Tour A travel company plans your itinerary and arranges all the logistics including lodging, local activities, and transportantion. You have the flexibility of a solo trip while still getting the convience and time savings of expert planning. Get 90% of the benefits of a tour, without a guide.
Group Tour Groups are between 25-60 people, typically ~30-40. Usually there will be many opportunities to split off and enjoy meals and excursions in smaller groups. This is the most economical way to travel, saving up to 40% versus booking the same itinerary yourself.
River Cruise These vessels are smaller than most ocean cruisers, limiting which amenties are available. Passenger counts can vary. One of the biggest advantages of a river cruise is the ability to dock at smaller ports and local villages.
Small Ship Cruise Small ship cruises usually have a max passenger count of 500. The primary purpose of these trips is to spend time off the vessel in local ports (e.g. Mediterranean) or experiencing nature (e.g Galapagos or Antarctica). Cabins can vary from budget to luxury.
Large Ship Cruise This is the "floating city" experience, with multiple ways to enjoy your vacation aboard the ship as much as on land. Ships are multiple floors, provide several activities, culinary, and shopping options. They often make fewer stops and have less time available for shore excursions.
Retreats Similar to a self guided tour but staying in one location only with activities and day outings included as a part of the stay.

IE puts on a show on the Amazon

My wife and I just returned from a wet season trip with International Expeditions (IE) to Lima and the Amazon.
It was tremendous:
1. The diversity of wildlife is extreme and up close and personal.
2. The vastness of it all approaches infinity.
3. The staff and guides were top drawer professionals.
The IE mother ship (Zafiro) is in great condition and very comfortable, clean and welcoming. The staff is friendly, helpful, supportive, knowledgeable. The naturalists/guides are the best. Experts in the wildlife and flora and good-natured and personable.
Yes, it is hot and humid, but very bearable. Yes, there are mosquitoes at night, but again very manageable. (We've all experienced much much worse in the US.)
In the wet season (50 feet higher water than in dry season) you don't get to walk as much as you do in dry season because terra firma is so much further into the rain forest than you can reach in a boat. But we did get to visit villages and walk in the rain forest.
We swam. We went out every morning and afternoon in the skiffs to explore smaller rivers and lakes. Sloths, monkeys, iguana, boa, anaconda, caiman, tarantula, piranha, frogs, toads, and more bird types than you can count.
Wow - What a Show!

If I could give zero stars I would. Unstandable this trip could not go ahead because of COVID19.
I was never given the option to ask for a full refund or credit. They are now holding a large amount of money in credits for me and when I rang them in regards to this, I was spoken rudely and down to by the topdeck employee.
I received a credit that runs out in Dec 2020 and now have been advised that Topdeck have extended the credit note to run out in Dec 2021 and are thinking of extending again if needed.
Horrible customer service and changed things to benefit themselves.
Especially in the predicament that COVID has put everyone in, you would think they wouldn't hold $6,500 from a client especially when I tried to let them know that the money was needed for medical.
Will not be using them again and will be letting everyone know about my horrible experience with them

A heartless tour company!!

Let me start by saying that I did not even get the chance to go on this trip. A week prior to my trip to Spain, an immediate family member of mine become ill with imminent death. I was unable under the circumstances to travel and wanted to cancel my trip and was willing to reschedule for a later date or get a credit. This was a very expensive trip for both my sister and I, taking us years to save up for it. The response we received from our agent is that Contiki is not willing to postpone the travel, even after we were willing to pay an extra fee. This tells me that this company is GREEDY and HEARTLESS. My family member has since passed away, 3 days before my departure date which was supposed to be on July 2nd. I even went to check the Contiki website and was shocked to see that my trip which was previously full, has now opened up spots to fill our place. Now, not only are they keeping the money of 2 young hardworking people, but also making money off filling our spots!! I've never experienced such injustice and mistreatment from a company in my entire life! This company has no sympathy and ZERO understanding for a situation as devastating as death. My sister and I were so excited to go on this trip and were very upset by the timing of our situation... but how can you control when a loved one will pass??????? SHAME ON YOU CONTIKI. If nothing is done to resolve this unfair policy, I will make sure not to recommend your tours to anyone.
