Where is the Isle of Capri?
The Isle of Capri Italy is located in the Campania region of Southern Italy, near the Bay of Naples, 19 miles toward the south of Naples. The island is situated in the west of the Sorrento peninsula and the Amalfi coast and was a joined part of the peninsula a long time ago. This single limestone block is about 3.9 miles long and 1.8 miles wide, having an area of about 4 square miles.

1. Marina Piccola

2. Blue Grotto
This world-famous spot of the island is a small cave, with an opening not more than 1 meter high. The crystal clear blue water has made this place so popular. There are boats at the entrance of the cave to take you inside.
3. Gardens of Augustus
The beautiful botanic garden if filled with Mediterranean flora and is one of the most attractive places of the island. The garden is not very large but the view it gives to the visitors compensates for its size.
4. Villa San Michele
The beautiful house was home to the Swedish doctor Axel Munthe that loves Italy so much that he decided to make his home here. The doctor has a huge collection of archeological artifacts, Egyptian, Roman, and Etruscan, that are now displayed around the house.
5. Monte Solaro
To reach the highest point of the island on this mountain, you need to take a chairlift from Anacapri's Piazza Vittoria. The 588 m high summit gives you the view of the whole Island as well as the surroundings, like the Bay of Naples, Amalfi peninsula, to the mountains of Calabria.

1. Caprese Salad
With three key ingredients, this light salad is a perfect dish for summertime. The salad includes vine-picked tomatoes, cow's milk mozzarella, and aromatic basil leaves, sprinkles with a drizzle of olive oil.
The freshness of the ingredients when combined, brings out a unique flavor. You will find it listed in almost every restaurant’s menu. Panini Caprese is a heavenly variation where the salad ingredients are filled in the fresh bread and grilled till the cheese melts.
2. Arancini
These small tidbits are found all over the Capri in bars served as a snack. The small orange-like rice balls are made using leftover risotto rice that is mixed with various ingredients and then deep-fried. Usually, the filling includes cheese, different vegetables or hams. 3. Impepata di Cozze
This simple but delicious dish is made by utilizing the coastal harvest of the island. The freshly caught mussels are prepared in garlic, pepper, and white wine, with some parsley, added. Served with baked bread, this is one of the most delicious dishes with such simple ingredients.
4. Linguine
This pasta type is a classic of Capri Island. The pasta form lies between the fettuccine and spaghetti in size and is prepared with the local fresh seafood. The recipe includes mussels and clams to be spiced with red pepper and then cooking in the vegetable broth. When done, they are tossed with fresh linguine and served with the full classic flavor of local seafood.
5. Scialatielli
This is another form of pasta, created by Chef Enrico Cosentino in the 1960s. The pasta is unique due to its ruffled hand-cut shapes. The pasta is cooked with freshly caught sea-food with the addition of white wine and sometimes with some added spinach to give it a green color.
6. Chiummenzana
The delicious tomato and herb sauce with its Mediterranean taste and aroma is a popular ingredient in many meat and pasta dishes of the region. The sauce is also used as a dip with various snacks like arancini.
7. Torta Caprese
This dessert is popular since ancient times. This flourless chocolate cake is made from dark chocolate, eggs, sugar and ground almonds. There are many stories entailed to the origin of this gluten-free and dense masterpiece.
8. Limoncello
The traditional drink is prepared by infusing lemon peel on alcohol for weeks before bottling. Every meal on the island has to end with a shot of limoncello. The drink has a shelf life of about three years so you can take it along as a souvenir of your visit.
How far is the Isle of Capri from Rome?
The distance between Rome and Isle of Capri is about 130 miles which makes it an ideal location to plan a day trip. You can even plan a short two to three days trip to the island to leave the bustling city behind and relax in the calm and peaceful atmosphere of the beautiful island.
Getting to the Isle of Capri from Rome
As Isle of Capri is an island so there are only two ways to reach there, through helicopter or ferry. The most popular and economical way is to go to Naples through the road and then take a ferry to Capri. There are various ways to travel between Rome and Naples. You might think that traveling by air can be the fastest way to reach Naples but that is not true.
The transport to and from the airport plus the airport security check time adds up to the travel time, making it a total procedure of 3 to 4 hours. While if you travel by train that will not only cost you less but also saves a lot of time.
Three types of trains leave from Roma Termini central train station for Naples. The fastest is the Eurostar Freccia Rossa (TAV) but also the most expensive one. TAV will take you to Naples in about one hour. Intercity trains are the more economical option that will cost you half the money but will take about double the time for the route.
The third option is Interegionali that is the cheapest, costing half the price than intercity but takes double time. Interegionali is not recommended if you are on a day trip to but are a good option if you plan to stay overnight or have a 2-3 days plan. You can get your tickets online or at the station. Buying in advance can also get you a discount.
You can also avail of the bus service to travel from Rome to Naples. The buses are cheap but are slow and will take about 3 hours for the journey. Traveling by road in a car is also an option, but a hectic one. The travel time will be about 2.5 hours, but the crowded parking spots, road tolls, etc. might become a problem. If you are planning to stay in Naples and only intend to visit Capri for a day or so, then the car is a good option. Once you reach Naples you can take a ferry to get to the island.
Getting to the Isle of Capri from Naples
The best and only way to travel between Naples and the Isle of Capri is through ferry and there are many tour operators to offer you the ride. Naples has two piers from where the ferry leave for Capri; Calata di Massa and Molo Beverello. Calata di Massa is situated in the further eastern corner while Molo Beverello is located in Piazza Municipio.
Ferries and slow ferries depart from Calata di Massa and high-speed ferries from Molo Beverello only. Ferries and slow ferries have lower prices compared to high-speed ferries and can also carry your motor vehicle to the island. When the sea gets rough, high-speed ferries usually get suspended and you have to choose from the other two options.
The slow ferry takes 80 minutes, ferry 50 minutes and high-speed ferry 40 minutes to take you from Naples to the Isle of Capri. No advanced reservation is necessary as you can get the tickets on the spot. However, all three ferries operate on a schedule that you need to check before planning your trip. Independent travelers might not want to bind themselves with buying a return ticket when they can get their tickets from Marina Grande at the Isle of Capri.
The large electronic departure board at Marina Grande displays the schedules for next ferries and you can get the tickets from the ticket desk. The ticket desks of all operators are found together at a single spot for the convenience of the tourists. The prices between the operators are not very different so you can choose any one of them.
Cars are not allowed on the island for most of the year, except for the residents. The place has a single main road and a well-networked and well-maintained public transportation system that is why it is better to leave the hassle of driving a car far from the island.
Best time to visit Capri
The Isle of Capri despite its temperate climate witnesses all four beautiful seasons. Summertime is the most crowded as the weather is most appropriate with warm temperatures, sunny days and balmy nights. That is the reason this is the most crowded time here as well.
You will see thousands of visitors arriving by ferries at the Marina Grande port, enjoying the beach during days and stroll along Via Camerelle or gather at Piazzetta at night. As for being the peak-time, the rates for ferry and accommodation also get very high. Most of the parties and festivals are held from June to August.
Autumn, from September to November, brings with its beautiful scenery and pleasant weather when most of the tourists have gone back to their home but the restaurants and hotels are still open. Apart from the beaches and historical locations, you can also visit the hiking trails with stunning views during the fall.
Though it gets very cold in Capri during winter, this season has a different side of the place to offer. From December to February, the sun shines for only four hours a day that makes it very cold here. Most of the hotels and restaurants are closed during this time but who remain open offer a good discount.
Springtime is the most ideal to visit Capri. From March to May, the weather has just started to warm up and the huge tourist crowds have not yet arrived. The temperature is pleasant and almost all the restaurants and hotels have opened. You can enjoy the warm beach, empty museums, and refreshing hiking trails. You might also get the chance to ride on the ferry to enjoy the surroundings.
