What travelers are saying

"I did the EBC trek with Intrepid in September and October. Our group missed the first 3 days of the planned 12 day trek due to bad weather. There was a real fear we would not be able to do the trek at all. Intrepid sorted out additional accommodation and flights once we were able to fly. Our group made it to EBC by missing the 2 acclimation days on the accent and descending in 3 days instead of 4. This was only possible because of the awesome staff (guides and porters) employed by Intrepid and by Intrepid's backroom staff making alternative accommodation and flight arrangements for us."

Is Azerbaijan Safe?

  • Safety alert level 3: As of October 2020, Azerbaijain is considered a safety risk for travelers due to Covid-19 and violence

Azerbaijan has traditionally been a fairly stable and safe country for travelers despite its location. In the late summer of 2020 however, violence erupted between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh. Nagorno-Karabakh is technically recognized as part of Azerbaijan however it is ethnically Armenian. The conflict has been exacerbated due to the alliances from the neighboring countries, namely Turkey which has thrown support behind Azerbaijan.

Travelers should be aware of this unrest before considering visiting Azerbaijan. The safety warning level for Azerbaijan is currently at 3 “Reconsider Travel”. Terrorism is a concern, not just in the disputed region. American travelers take note that in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh, the US has limited resources to assist tourists.

If you decide to travel to Azerbaijan, we highly recommend a vacation package or guided tour. This will ensure you have a support network and local assistance with the language and safe places to go.

What is the currency in Azerbaijan?

  • The currency in Azerbaijani is the manat (AZN)

US dollars and Euros can be exchanged easily and most major cities have ATMs. Restaurants, hotels, and shops in the major cities usually accept credit cards as well.

Best time to visit Azerbaijan

  • Spring, between April-June
  • Fall, between September-October

Azerbaijan experiences extremely cold winters and very hot summers, so the best time to go is during the shoulder seasons between April-June and September-October.

If you don’t mind a little bit of nippy cold weather, visit Azerbaijan in March for “Novruz Bayrami” the Persian New Year celebrations. The spring wildflowers are also reputed to be spectacular!
