Travel Style Travel Style Relaxed A lot of free time, with very few inclusions. Ideal for independent and/or low-key travelers and cruisers.
Full on For those looking to maximize their sight seeing time. You thrive on a packed day’s schedule from 8 am to 6pm, with some (but limited) free time. Most activities and meals included.
Mixed You will have solid amounts of both free time and structured time with some activities and meals included.

Trip Type Trip Type Group Tour Groups are between 25-60 people, typically ~30-40. Usually there will be many opportunities to split off and enjoy meals and excursions in smaller groups. This is the most economical way to travel, saving up to 40% versus booking the same itinerary yourself.
Small Group Tour Small groups are usually defined as between 10 and 24 travelers, often less. If you're the kind of person who enjoys more intimate experiences and personal service this is a good choice. All else being equal you will pay a premium for this style vs a larger group tour.
River Cruise These vessels are smaller than most ocean cruisers, limiting which amenties are available. Passenger counts can vary. One of the biggest advantages of a river cruise is the ability to dock at smaller ports and local villages.
Small Ship Cruise Small ship cruises usually have a max passenger count of 500. The primary purpose of these trips is to spend time off the vessel in local ports (e.g. Mediterranean) or experiencing nature (e.g Galapagos or Antarctica). Cabins can vary from budget to luxury.
Private Guided Private tours give you the undivided attention of a guide, and often involve special access to sites and unique experiences not available to larger groups. This is a great option for families, couples, and small friend groups. Expect to pay a bit more for the extra service.
Self Guided / Independent Tour A travel company plans your itinerary and arranges all the logistics including lodging, local activities, and transportantion. You have the flexibility of a solo trip while still getting the convience and time savings of expert planning. Get 90% of the benefits of a tour, without a guide.
Vacation / Holiday Package Similar to a self guided tour, this usually involves a home base, such as a hotel or resort, with packaged activities and day tours as a part of the stay.
Large Ship Cruise This is the "floating city" experience, with multiple ways to enjoy your vacation aboard the ship as much as on land. Ships are multiple floors, provide several activities, culinary, and shopping options. They often make fewer stops and have less time available for shore excursions.

Itinerary Focus

Lodging Level Lodging Level Camping Typically involves most nights sleeping in tents (sometimes permanent tented sites) or in rustic cabins and lodges.

Premium - 4 star 3 to 4 star western hotel equivalents. While not all lodging will be 'luxury' they will be quite comfortable by western standards.

Highlights
  • Pre-2005, you wouldn't have been able to spend a night in holy Moulay Idriss if you weren't a Muslim. These days you can stay with an awesome local family and eat their delicious home-cooked fare no matter your beliefs
  • It's easy to get lost in a labyrinth (think less David Bowie film, more medieval maze), especially when there are enticing distractions at every turn. Never fear, your local guide knows the city of Fes like a lifelong friend
  • Don't get in a hoof when you're offered a camel burger in Meknes. Like all good food in the medina, this exotic lunch is cooked before your eyes at a hole-in-the-wall restaurant
  • Sleep under the stars in the Sahara, watch the sun rise over the dunes, ride a camel through the desert and explore the spectacular Todra Gorge. Is this all a dream?
  • Souq and ye shall find. The Marrakech marketplace is even more chaotic than you'd imagine. Take a deep breath before you start haggling your socks off with the locals
  • How about tasting some Berber Whisky? Even better, how about learning how to prepare this traditional drink? Learn from the experts on one of the exclusive demonstrations.
  • Who knows where the best street food is in Marrakech? Those who knows the streets of Marrakech best. Venture out for some street food tasting in the maze of Marrakech streets with the local expert.
  • Who doesn’t love a good walk? Enjoy a hike up the Atlas Mountains to the foot of Jebel Toubkal, the highest point in North Africa.
  • Run to Paradise Valley – you don’t want anyone to tell you the blue pools and waterfalls aren’t some of the most beautiful out there
  • It’s not a stretch to say that relaxing yoga lessons on the coast of South Morocco are a highlight of this adventure. You’ll get a chance to hang ten on a basic surf class too
  • Hendrix came to Essaouria for a reason – the city of the wind draws all sorts of artsy types thanks to its culture (and maybe it’s delicious grilled seafood too)

I have traveled with Gate 1 several times both on guided and independent trips. My experience has always been positive. I have never encountered a problem or misrepresentation from them. On a guided trip to Croatia and Slovenia, they provided additional meals that were not on the scheduled itinerary when there were some delays due to traffic. All representatives I have dealt with are very professional and helpful. I had a trip booked for Egypt that Gate 1 cancelled due to COVID19. I have a full credit for what I paid to use towards another Gate 1 trip and cannot wait for travel to open up so I can go with Gate 1 again. I highly recommend this company!

Beginning of this year I have booked a trip to Peru with Gate1travel for June of this year after Gate1travel had been highly recommended. Well, what can I tell you, with the Pandemic that nobody expected, the vacation including the flight was cancelled. I did get a refund for the vacation part, but I am still waiting on the refund for the airfare, which was the majority of the expense. Latham airline refers me to Gate1travel for any refunds as Gate1travel had booked the flights, and Gate1travel blames everything on the airline. And here I am, the consumer, that paid in good faith for a promise that was not kept, or for a product that was never received.
While I understand the special circumstances everybody is dealing with during this Pandemic, I want to point out that it not only hit the travel industry, but any and everybody around.
We are all trying to get thru those unprecedented times as good as we can, while trying to stick to our values and do the right thing.
And that’s what I am hoping for, writing this message. The right thing.

My trip cancelled due to COVID. I got an email saying do nothing. I finally contacted Gate 1 to see what was happening and request an airfare refund. They said Iceland AIR retained a $400 cancellation fee. Since USDOT said airlines weren’t allowed to do that and Gate 1 insisted that is what happened I contacted USDOT. What really happened is Gate 1 cancelled my flight before the flight cancelled and before contacting me. They forfeited my full refund by doing this and now I can’t get a response. The transaction was very shady. I will never deal with this company again. Oh and they told me they aren’t a travel agency is why they weren’t fighting to get my refund, not that through their actions they forfeited it. I believe they owe me this cancellation fee.

Our first Gate 1 experience was a trip to Scandinavia in 2016 and we have been on three more trips since then. Unfortunately, we missed out on two Gate 1 trips in 2020 due to the pandemic. First, prices for Gate 1’s escorted tours can’t be beat when compared with other travel companies. Booking is easy and the travel agents have always been responsive to helping us. (Thanks Sean C!) Next, the guides are so knowledgeable, personable, and helpful. Gate 1 provides a planned itinerary including extra (and sometimes delightfully unexpected) experiences. We have also enjoyed meeting other fellow Gate 1 travelers. Finally, we want to learn more about the world by meeting people from other countries and seeing the world and Gate 1 is our travel partner. Can’t wait to book our next trip with Gate 1!!!
