Style Style Small Group Tour Small groups are usually defined as between 10 and 24 travelers, often less. If you're the kind of person who enjoys more intimate experiences and personal service this is a good choice. All else being equal you will pay a premium for this style vs a larger group tour.
Private Guided Private tours give you the undivided attention of a guide, and often involve special access to sites and unique experiences not available to larger groups. This is a great option for families, couples, and small friend groups. Expect to pay a bit more for the extra service.
Self Guided Tour A travel company plans your itinerary and arranges all the logistics including lodging, local activities, and transportantion. You have the flexibility of a solo trip while still getting the convience and time savings of expert planning. Get 90% of the benefits of a tour, without a guide.
Group Tour Groups are between 25-60 people, typically ~30-40. Usually there will be many opportunities to split off and enjoy meals and excursions in smaller groups. This is the most economical way to travel, saving up to 40% versus booking the same itinerary yourself.
River Cruise These vessels are smaller than most ocean cruisers, limiting which amenties are available. Passenger counts can vary. One of the biggest advantages of a river cruise is the ability to dock at smaller ports and local villages.
Small Ship Cruise Small ship cruises usually have a max passenger count of 500. The primary purpose of these trips is to spend time off the vessel in local ports (e.g. Mediterranean) or experiencing nature (e.g Galapagos or Antarctica). Cabins can vary from budget to luxury.
Large Ship Cruise This is the "floating city" experience, with multiple ways to enjoy your vacation aboard the ship as much as on land. Ships are multiple floors, provide several activities, culinary, and shopping options. They often make fewer stops and have less time available for shore excursions.
Retreats Similar to a self guided tour but staying in one location only with activities and day outings included as a part of the stay.

Top Galapagos Islands Attractions & Experiences

Top Galapagos Islands Experiences

Getting closer to wildlife than at any other place on the planet, on islands where animals have no fear of humans.

Viewing the mesmerizing courtship “dance” of the blue-footed booby, in which the two birds lift one foot, then the other, and peck at each other with their bills.

Snorkeling among sea lions, sea turtles, barracuda, and (harmless) sharks in crystal-clear, warm waters.

Spotting the world’s most northerly -- and some of the world’s smallest -- penguins, frolicking in the water.

Marveling at sleek black frigate birds – known as the “pirates of the sea” – as they swoop down and steal food out of other birds’ mouths.

Stepping carefully amid hundreds of marine iguanas as they emerge from the sea where they’ve been feeding, then scurry up on the rocks to dry out.

Watching as colorful red-orange Sally Lightfoot crabs skitter across a shallow tide pool.

Climbing a volcanic hill via boardwalk for a panoramic view, which astronaut Buzz Aldrin once compared to a moonscape.

Sharing a field with dozens of giant tortoises as they inch along, looking like they just emerged from the dinosaur era.

Visiting the Charles Darwin Research Station and learning about his amazing discoveries.

This was a memorable trip, very well organised, with all the flights (8 in
total) on time, all the local guides outstanding, and the itinerary
dovetailed together excellently.
Every day was equally great, but perhaps the Inca Trail Day 4 (the final day
of the trek - we just did this one day) was superb, ending with the panoramic
viewpoint of Machu Picchu from the Sun Gate.

The Galapagos islands and wildlife were also very inspirational.

The Group Leader in Peru/Cusco - Fabrizzio was truly outstanding. As there
was just 2 of us in his group in Peru, he devoted much more time - including
our 'free day' - to showing us around in his personal time - than he actually
was scheduled to do. His knowledge of history, culture, geography and his
enthusiasm was great. A special thanks to Fabrizzio!

Our guides in Quito and the Galapagos were also excellent.

Yes. This trip is classified as 'easy/leisurely'. We both felt this
understates the demanding nature of the trip. Whilst there were no
technically difficult or dangerous elements, the itinerary was hugely
demanding (8 flights, many 4.30 -5.30 am starts, an arduous trek, and quite
demanding snorkelling in the Galapagos). Whilst we were both well able to
handle all this (we are both experienced walkers), many people might be
misled by the classification into thinking that it was a leisurely trip, and
might find it difficult.
Secondly, the flight schedule is dangerously tight in one place: the flight
from Cusco to Quito, with one stop in Lima only allowed for 1hr 5 mins gap at
Lima to transfer flights. Fortunately our Cusco flight landed on time, but
even so WE ONLY JUST MADE THE CONNECTION. Had our flight been just 10 mins
late from Cusco, we would definitely have missed the connection. This caused
us unnecessary stress at the time, and concerns that our luggage would not
make the transfer even if we as passengers did, in such a short time window.
Additionally it is IMPORTANT to flag to Exodus some misleading info
concerning baggage at Lima airport. You state in the trip notes that bags
must be collected in Lima, even though we have connecting flights thru to
Quito. This is NOT CORRECT. We checked most carefully with our guide, and
with the airline, who confirmed that the flight from Cusco to Quito via Lima
MUST have luggage booked through the whole trip. In fact, if we had collected
our bags in Lima and then gone thru all the re-booking of bags again for the
onward leg to Quito WE WOULD CERTAINLY HAVE MISSED THE CONNECTION. We
strongly recommend that a more secure flight connection (ie a longer gap) is
used on this leg of the trip in future.

Nemo II was a great boat for our Galapagos part of the trip. The crew were
amazing, the food outstanding, the standard of cleanliness and service
superb, and the naturalist Gabriel very well informed.

Our sincere thanks to Exodus and everone involved for a memorable trip!

John Farrington

We toured the Galápagos Islands for 7 days. We saw so many unique animals.
The trip really made me realize how completely special the Galápagos Islands
are. Riss, our guide, was a Galapaguano and was proud of his heritage. He
had excellent knowledge of the wildlife we saw, the history of Darwin and the
researchers who came after him and the forces which brought the islands into
being.
Seeing the sea turtles and the white tipped reef shark. Also walking on the
recently-140 year old lava. Watching the mating rituals of the frigate birds
and the boobies.

Please see the summary. He was excellent in every way, Knowledgeable,
patient, flexible, excellent English.

Apply sun screen 15 minutes before leaving, use zinc oxide sunscreen as it is
less damaging to the wildlife.

Our crew and the food were first class. The ship was not. It was a
replacement for a ship which was sunk in dry dock and was noisy with diesel
fumes. I realize Exodus offered us a chance to rebook but we had made our
air arrangements by then. Exodus does not offer airfare from the US. I
think we should be offered some compensation for the inferior ship. As noted
in my evaluation, I found a roach in the bathroom. Our toilet leaked and
required emergency repairs.

Fabulous holiday, shame about the boat!

The two-week wildlife cruise was the holiday of a lifetime. We both enjoy
science and wildlife, we are also sailors and have our own boat. Most days
the itinerary was full on and wonderful, and we were delighted with the
amazing wildlife both on land and in the sea. The crew were very friendly
and worked amazingly hard. There was a generous amount of good food for
every meal, including much fruit, vegetables and salads. Unfortunately
several of us had stomach upsets for 1 or 2 days.
The boat was the main cause for concern. The A/C in the dining room failed
for a couple of days, and dripped water on the seating so we had several wet
seats for a few days. The Dining room ceiling also dripped water on several
occasions. Our A/C also dripped on the carpet, or anything that was on the
carpet nearby, and also on the shelves under it. Many things were wet or
smelled musty. We had room 1 and our toilet was often malfunctioning from
the start, and then blocked completely for a whole day (happily the crew
worked very hard and managed to repair it by bedtime). There were no other
toilets except the ones in other guests cabins.
Exodus gave us only 24 hours to decide whether to abort the holiday as the
original boat the Cachalot was out of commission but we were told that the
substitute boat was also a “first class boat”. We now discover that
according to Galapagos Islands.com the ‘Astrea’ or ‘Pinguino
Explorer’ is down as a “mid-priced boat” and costs 650 dollars per week
less that the ‘Catchalot’ did, so we are not amused as no refund was
offered for this cheaper accommodation.
Exodus were unable to give us useful information regarding laundry (they said
there was none) or the ability to wash things ourselves and hang them out.
Also, they were unable to answer queries about the flight from Quito to the
islands or the baggage allowance for that flight. We therefore took far too
much luggage!
We were only told about the need for US dollars to pay the bar bill within
the last week when we had already ordered and collected our dollars.
So hard to decide as most days exceeded our expectations. I loved the seals,
so amusing and entertaining, as were the Penguins but the Hammerhead sharks
took my breath away. We saw about 100 Mola mola (sunfish) I also was blown
away by the Siera Negra Volcano – so huge.

Very knowledgeable about so many things, but not easy to get a straight
answer from, and also rather creepy.

Find out who the local agent is and check their website, it answered many of
our outstanding questions. You can wash for yourself, a plug is useful, and
hang out clothes on the rail outside.
