Assisi Tours & Travel Guide
Assisi is a beautiful, classic Italian town, Assisi is picturesque at every point. From its perfect cobblestone streets, to the rolling hills of the Italian countryside that can be seen from any vantage point around the city, it is a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of Italy’s busy tourist cities and get a better feel of the country itself.
Assisi’s small size and tiny streets make going on a walking tour is one of the best ways to explore Assisi, especially if it is on your grand tour of Umbria. In the heart of Italy, Umbria has a rich medieval past, and evidence of this history can be seen in the medieval buildings and layout of the city.
These narrow paths and cobblestone streets can only be seen on foot, and your tour guide will take you through these passages and off the beaten path to explain Assisi’s fascinating history
On your walking tour of Assisi, as in other cities in Umbria, your guide will not only take you to famous landmarks, but will likely take you into a few Italian shops. Whether it’s a stop at a deli to taste a few regional delicacies, or brief visit to a local craftsman to see how they make their goods, a walking tour allows you to get close to the action and to the heart of the city.
Assisi is one of the top places for Catholics on a pilgrimage in Italy, and this is for one reason: Saint Francis was born, raised, and died in the small town of Assisi. Francis is one of the most important saints in the Italian faith, the patron saint of animals and the natural environment, and starting a well known following of Franciscan Monks.
Francis himself encouraged living a life free of temptation, he himself enjoyed living in the wilderness, far from and without unnecessary material objects, so you may be surprised to find the basilica dedicated to him to be the largest and most ornate in all of Assisi. In fact, St. Francis’ Basilica is a World Heritage site, and an important example of Italian architecture taught in many art history classes.
The basilica is unique in another way: inside the church is another church. The first instruction Francis ever received from God had to do with the repairing a small wooden church, and this is what Francis did.
The church remained incredibly important to him, and throughout his life he urged his followers to never leave the place, and when he was on his deathbed, he asked to be brought back to it. This same 13th century church is now encompassed by the much larger basilica, forever preserved for Francis’s followers.
Being a religiously Catholic community, any traveler to Assisi should expect stores to be closed on Sundays, as well as the main Christian holidays. With this being said, there are also several other interesting events and festivals that occur in Assisi and may be worth scheduling your travel around. Here are some of them:
