Highlights

  • BURMA - INLE LAKE: The tranquil Inle Lake is located in Burma's Shan State, and is home unique fish species and prolific bird life. Many of the communities who live in villages surrounding the lake are from Burma's various ethnic minority groups, such as the Danu and Bamar people. Enjoy a boat ride on the lake, visit nearby monasteries, and look for the distinct woven bags and silk fabrics made in the area.
  • BURMA - IRRAWADDY RIVER: Embark on a boat ride on one of the country's most significant waterways, the Irrawaddy River. Stop at rural villages, local pagodas and to see intricate carvings at Kyauk Gu U Min. The river is home to the endangered Irrawaddy dolphin, who are under threat from dam construction. The river eventually flows into the Andaman Sea via the Irrawaddy Delta.
  • BURMA - LOCAL MARKETS: Experience Burma's local life, colorful produce and fantastic array of local handicrafts in its numerous fascinating markets. Near Inle Lake, frequent a local market where many diverse ethnic minority groups gather, and in Yangon and Mandalay, search for exquisite examples of Burmese lacquerware, fabrics and other eye-catching merchandise. Enjoy interacting with Burma's warm, friendly people as you peruse their wares.

Highlights

The intricately carved Temples of Angkor are Cambodia’s main draw, but elsewhere in the country you’ll find vibrant minority villages and great swathes of wilderness. Our Southeast Asia specialists have visited Cambodia time and time again, meeting knowledgeable guides and seeking out comfortable beds in sublime locations. Aiming to take you beyond the obvious, our specialists can build a tailor-made itinerary to help you make the most of your Cambodia holiday. Gradually reclaimed by jungle over hundreds of years, Angkor’s temples still retain their mystery and we can point you toward some of the smaller, lesser-visited sites. French colonists have left behind a legacy of European-style villas and baroque-influenced gardens, best seen along the boulevards of Phnom Penh. To the northeast, the hills and forests shelter wild elephants and mighty waterfalls, as well as resilient minority peoples. To the south you can soak up the relaxed atmosphere of sleepy coastal towns and enjoy the local delicacy, crab.

Irrawaddy River Tour Selection Trips

  • A number of river cruise lines now operate on the Irrawaddy, including Viking River Cruises, Pandaw River Expeditions, CroisiEurope, Belmond, Uniworld, Avalon, and AmaWaterways.
  • Irrawaddy River cruises may take anywhere from four days to two weeks, depending on the itinerary.
  • Many cruise packages include sightseeing in Bagan, Yangon and Mandalay, increasing length to a week or more.
  • You can choose one-way or roundtrip cruises.
  • Usual embarkation or disembarkation points are Yangon in the south and Bagan and Mandalay to the north, but some cruises start or end farther north in Burma.
  • You can also add on cruises along Burma’s Chindwin River, the Irrawaddy’s largest tributary and home to more jungles, gorges, and rural villages.
  • Be sure to pack modest clothing that covers the shoulders and legs to enter Buddhist temples. In general, pack loose-fitting long pants and/or skirts for women, instead of shorts. Pick thin fabrics to stay cool.
  • When it’s winter in North America and Europe, it’s monsoon season in Burma. That means rain, but also somewhat cooler temperatures and fewer crowds.
  • Dry season brings more heat, more visitors, and higher water levels (from snow melt in the Himalayas) that may result in longer portions of navigable river.
