- Consider carefully if you want to use a Russian company or a Western-run cruise line; many of the Russian operators are not yet fully experienced in catering to North American and Western European tastes.
- The weather in northern Russia can get cold in May and September, so before booking an expensive balcony cabinconsider carefully just how much time you’ll actually spend on your balcony.
- A number of river cruise lines operate on the Moscow-St. Petersburg route, so you’ll have a choice of budgets and levels of luxury.
- While itineraries are similar among the various cruise lines, some may spend more (or less) time in port or offer a few different ports or side trips than their competitors.

- Other Russian river cruises -- on Russian-run ships -- operate on separate sections of the Volga as well as the Don River. Some Dnieper River cruises are still operating in Ukraine, but have at least temporarily altered their itineraries to avoid Russian-claimed Crimea.
