Trip Type Trip Type Group Tour Groups are between 25-60 people, typically ~30-40. Usually there will be many opportunities to split off and enjoy meals and excursions in smaller groups. This is the most economical way to travel, saving up to 40% versus booking the same itinerary yourself.
Small Group Tour Small groups are usually defined as between 10 and 24 travelers, often less. If you're the kind of person who enjoys more intimate experiences and personal service this is a good choice. All else being equal you will pay a premium for this style vs a larger group tour.
River Cruise These vessels are smaller than most ocean cruisers, limiting which amenties are available. Passenger counts can vary. One of the biggest advantages of a river cruise is the ability to dock at smaller ports and local villages.
Small Ship Cruise Small ship cruises usually have a max passenger count of 500. The primary purpose of these trips is to spend time off the vessel in local ports (e.g. Mediterranean) or experiencing nature (e.g Galapagos or Antarctica). Cabins can vary from budget to luxury.
Private Guided Private tours give you the undivided attention of a guide, and often involve special access to sites and unique experiences not available to larger groups. This is a great option for families, couples, and small friend groups. Expect to pay a bit more for the extra service.
Self Guided / Independent Tour A travel company plans your itinerary and arranges all the logistics including lodging, local activities, and transportantion. You have the flexibility of a solo trip while still getting the convience and time savings of expert planning. Get 90% of the benefits of a tour, without a guide.
Vacation / Holiday Package Similar to a self guided tour, this usually involves a home base, such as a hotel or resort, with packaged activities and day tours as a part of the stay.
Large Ship Cruise This is the "floating city" experience, with multiple ways to enjoy your vacation aboard the ship as much as on land. Ships are multiple floors, provide several activities, culinary, and shopping options. They often make fewer stops and have less time available for shore excursions.

This trip was awesome. It was a great experience to sleep in a swag each night under the stars or in a tent, hiking through stunning scenery, swimming in gorges, being exposed to plenty of flora and fauna, and just appreciating the wide open spaces of the Kimberley. Don’t expect 4 or 5 star comfort, which is the attraction of the trip - getting back to nature and away from technology and phones and internet, which allows you to soak up your surroundings.
Travelling along the dusty Gibb River road was an experience in itself, and the bus handled the road well. Our guides, Jacob and Marjorie were fantastic, and their food was an absolute delight, exceeding all expectations. They looked after us 24/7 and did a fabulous job narrating along the way, story telling, and lessons in the local flora, fauna and aboriginal culture.
This trip requires some physical activity, which is a welcome break from travelling in the bus.
Although we couldn’t get to Darwin due to COVID, our guides kept us well informed all the way and gave us options for getting home, and made us feel safe. We had to go back to Broome instead of Darwin, however some extra activities were thrown in to compensate this. During these difficult times of COVID, I recommend you expect there may be a need for back up plans in the event of any changes.

I have used Intrepid for international travel many times in the past (approx. 13 trips) and have always been satisfied. I appreciate that COVID has turned travel upside down and that Intrepid have not previously focused on Australian trips.

The trip I went on was new to Intrepid (Ningaloo Reef and Pilbara), so I guess that's why there may still be a few bugs to iron out. I still had a great trip and saw some amazing sights, but there is room for improvement.

The guides (Pete, Zac and Kyle) were brilliant and the 4WD bus we travelled in was clean, comfortable, well equipped and safe. Food was great from my perspective, but there were some issues for other people with dietary needs. Having full size mugs would be nice too (especially for non-coffee drinkers). I really liked that there were options for exploring different gorges with different difficulty levels at Karijini (and water shoes were provided).

Originally the route started in Exmouth, went to Karijini, then up to the Burrup peninsula and followed the coast past Onslow back to Exmouth. Due to COVID restrictions, this had to change to Exmouth -Karijini - Exmouth (with stops). I was notified well in advance. I understand this and it is not the fault of Intrepid, but if that original route could be reinstated when it is safe to do so, I think it would make the trip more interesting.

Being from WA, I know long distances are part of the experience here, so I understand that there will be long travel days. It is good if there is a bit more variety where possible. I did appreciate the stops along the way though.

I think the main thing is that the trip was marketed as 'comfort', but based on my past experiences it would be more appropriate to call it 'original'. It is easier to manage people's expectations that way. While the accommodation was adequate, it wasn't luxurious or above average as the comfort category implies.

Particularly at the camp site outside of Karijini, it was good to have access to a flushing toilet and hot shower, but cleanliness could improve. Also, one bathroom had no soap (which is important during COVID). Clean towels would also help. The camp host's interpersonal skills could improve too.

At the station stay (Cheela Plains), it was good but there was only one shower/toilet for all women in the camp site and it was quite a busy site.

We had a stop for afternoon tea at Bullara Station on the way back to Exmouth. The scones were very nice, but I think the service from the station was disappointing. Despite knowing that our group was coming and having the scones prepared, we could not sit in the garden as the café had 'closed', so we had to sit under a tree near sheep manure with a dirty table. Our guide tried to make the best of the situation (i.e. cleaning table, finding chairs), but he shouldn't have had to.

I would also suggest that a whale shark swim (or snorkeling at least) is included in Exmouth, as that is the main reason most people go there. I independently booked a whale shark swim ahead of time, but not everyone could do that and there were no spaces available later.

Overall, I had a great time, met some great people, and explored a unique part of my country that I could not otherwise do on my own.

A trip of a lifetime down the Gibb River road, visiting some of the most beautiful landscapes in Australia. The tour guides where excellent, thank goodness.
As the differences between the advertising from both Intrepid and the third party Kimberly Wild was very disappointing.
The upgrade accomodation (single supplement) is not worth the money. From smelly single beds, sub standard facilites to bug in one of the beds. What is advertised for the Bungle Bungels on both sites was definitely not the case. Drop toilets only, no shower facilities at all for two nights. The lack of shower facilities is not mentioned in any advertising what so ever.
The vehicle aircon had not been cleaned from previous trips, I cleaned the dirt from the filters so at least we could breath clean air. The inner workings of the aircon where coated in the red dirt of the Kimberly. In the new world of travelling a COVID plan would consider this a must after each trip.
On the COVID plan side, for Kimberly Wild not to cross the boarder to Katherine NT, not a Hot Spot, for WA government was appealing. I fully understood not going to Darwin. The trip returned to Broome from Kununurra, and travellers expected to foot the cost of Broome accomodation and flights back to home. My case Brisbane. No refund for the upgrades paid for accomodation not used. I was lucky enough that to save a lot of $’s, i flew from Kununurra to Darwin, no quarantine required, paid for hotel stay, then back home with no quarantine. I organised this through my travel agent, when there was internet of course. I would not recommend this trip to anyone that expects, to at least shower each night, and believe the advertising of what the accomodation/ sleeping arrangements single supplement is. Also, ensure you are in a couple as the discrimination for the single traveler for accomodation is very obvious.
I have sent detailed emails to both Intepid and Kimberly Wild and have not had any reply from either.
ENSURE You Wish to SWIM at all gorges as that is what it is all about. Not taking your time to take in and enjoy this beautiful part of our country.

Our recent trip was everything we hoped it would be. Fabulous guides, amazing meals and a truly great crew onboard. Surpassed only by the scenery. It is mind blowing. Kato n Joe worked so hard to make the trip flow and keep us informed.
