Kathmandu Tours & Travel Guide
Virtually anyone who goes trekking in Nepal spends time in Kathmandu before setting out for the hinterlands, and the city’s teeming markets, elaborate temples, and vendors selling prayer wheels, thankas (religious artworks) and a variety of crafts never fail to fascinate. Kathmandu has been recovering from a devastating earthquake in 2015, which destroyed many of the city’s landmarks, so tourism is more important than ever to its economy.
Originally known as Kantipur, the city is a completely unique place and worth visiting. Once, this place was used as the main trade route between Tibet and India until they grew up into a metropolis as they are today.
The constant nagging of the vendors, heavy traffic, rubbish, and human flood may get you frustrated, but as soon as you are out of all this, you will reach the very welcoming and entertaining part of the region. The unique feature is the blend of Hinduism and Buddhism and all the historical and cultural points.
Overall, Kathmandu is a safe city, safer than a number of other cities on earth. But there come some points where you need to be conscious to avoid danger. Nepalis are generally religious and pious people; hence, there is less ratio of petty crimes in the region, but it has its pretty share of crime.
The best way to travel safely in Nepal is to be careful in small things, like avoid dark and quiet alleys, especially at night time, or you may have the chance to have an encounter with some thieves. Keep your luggage with you or in your room while you go out and don't leave it anywhere unattended, or someone might pick it up as there is much poverty in Kathmandu. Always avoid flashing around a large sum of cash or let anyone know that you are wealthy.
Female travelers should be more careful, especially if they are traveling alone. Be careful and alert about your surroundings, and try not to travel alone. Avoid wearing exposing dresses like low-cut tops, short skirts, etc. as the country is home to conservative people. Nightlife can be very energetic and exciting, but women entering nightclubs and bars alone are not seen with a positive mindset. It is better to go to some good cafes and restaurants as they also have live music.
Selling and using drugs is common in many areas of the world, but in Kathmandu, you will find the drug dealers very persuasive and pretty insistent, selling drugs openly even during the day time. The best way to avoid any drug-related problem is to avoid these dealers and follow the local laws.
There are various ways of getting around in Kathmandu, as it is a tricky place to move around. You will find huge traffic and crowds everywhere around the streets. The best way to explore the historic region is to go around on foot or take a cycle riskha for a more convenient trip. Agree for the fare before starting a trip in the rickshaw, and for good service, pay a tip of around 10% of the fare.
Public transport buses and electric tempos are common means to travel for long journeys and connect the center of the city to the suburbs as well as cities and villages around. If you are going to travel on the bus, be prepared to get your personal spaces invaded. In these crowded buses, everyone is traveling jam-packed, and at times, you don't even need to hold a handle or anything as the bodies pushed against you support you to stay upright.
Taxis are a convenient and inexpensive way to travel in Kathmandu. Set a fare with the driver before starting the journey as most of them do not use the meters. They have a black number plate and taxi sign so you will easily recognize the taxis. Renting or driving a car can be a chaotic experience as the traffic is huge, and anyone seldom tries to obey any traffic law. People are in a hurry and rarely use the brakes, so it is better to travel in a vehicle driven by someone else.

Newar people, the inhabitants of the valley, were originally settled in the southern region of the old town. The place was known as Kantipur and flourished mainly in the Malla era when most of the historical monuments of the region were built.
Initially, it was an independent city in the valley, but during the 14th century, all the cities of the valley were united under the Malla King of Bakhtapur's rule. During the 15th century, it was divided again and into three city-states that lead to a series of wars, resulting in each leaving each of the three states vulnerable and weak.
During the invasions of 1768, Prithvi Narayan Shah conquered all these, unifying Nepal and making Kathmandu its new capital.
Kathmandu Nepal is one of the lucky regions of the world who experience all four seasons. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to October) are the most pleasant times, and people prefer to plan their trip during these months. Springtime has dry but a bit warmer weather and favors hiking, trekking, and exploring the region.
You might experience occasional showers. Summertime (June to August) is mostly wet, and you never know when it starts to rain. It is also the cheapest time to visit Kathmandu as the price for everything has fallen down. Autumn is comparatively a drier time with average temperatures, rising cold and clear skies.
If you are interested in outdoor activities, this is the most pleasant weather you can have here. Autumn, however, is also an expensive time because of the various important festivals going on. Winter (December to February) is at peak with harsh chilling wind and thick snow on the mountains.
People love to go paragliding, trekking, camping, mountain biking, rafting, etc. to witness the breathtaking snow-covered beauty of the region.
