Finland Tour Selection Trips

  • Most Finland tour arrive in Helsinki. Use this as your jumping-off point to travel by air, rail, road or water to the other major regions of Finland: Lakeland, Archipelago and Lapland.
  • Meet as many local people as you can during your Finland tour - it’s the best way to get to know the culture and personality of the destination. If at first the Finns seem reserved, this is just a symptom of their very polite, yet not overly gregarious behavior. They’re so happy you’re here!
  • A local tour guide can help translate where necessary, but English is widely spoken, particularly in the larger cities like Helsinki. Finnish and Swedish are officially the two languages spoken here - the Swedish population is about 5.5 percent.
  • Dress in layers, no matter what time of year your Finland tour takes place. The summer days can generally get up to 68 to 80 degrees F, but they can just as easily drop down to the low 60s. Blizzards are a threat in the winter, but if you love snow sports, rejoice and head to Lapland!
  • Bare it all in the sauna. It’s likely, and highly encouraged, that during your Finland tour, you partake of the sauna tradition as much as possible. Typically, Finns enter the sauna in groups separated by gender, and naked - but, if that’s just not your thing, bring a towel and at least give the sauna a try!
  • Consider an off-season Finland tour. Although the temperatures from September to May can be quite cold, the cities will be less crowded with tourists and the prices will be lower. Plus, there’s that added benefit of September to March being the best time to view the Northern Lights.

Additional details

Weather in Finland

Finland guided tours are offered year-round, with the bulk of the travel taking place between June and August, when the summer temperatures rise and it’s pleasant to take advantage of the countless lakes and rivers in the country. Remember, however, that Finland sits in both a maritime and continental climate, so travelers should be prepared for diverse weather - in short, dress in layers! The cold here is not brutal … warm air flowing in off the Atlantic and the Baltic keep the average winter temperatures higher than other countries of the same latitude (think southern Greenland, for example).

Summers in Finland are beautiful, thanks to mild, warm weather. Lapland’s Midnight Sun lasts for about two months. July is the warmest month, while February is the coldest. Note, however, that February is also the driest month and August is the wettest. As for the Northern Lights you’ve come so far to see, the Aurora Borealis are best viewed during Finland tours that take place September to March.

Do Finland Tours Visit Sweden and Norway?

It makes sense, if you have the time, to combine your Finland tour with guided visits of Sweden and Norway. Keep in mind that there is no direct train service between Sweden or Norway and Finland, but there are busses, some ferry service and of course, highways. Scandinavian guided tours will often include two or more of the countries in this region in one trip, choosing from the Scandinavian countries of Norway, Sweden and Denmark, and the Nordic countries of Finland and Iceland.

What Language Do They Speak in Finland?

Finland’s two main languages are Finnish and Swedish - 91.6 percent of the population speak Finnish, while 5.5 percent speak Swedish. If you visit Lapland during your Finland tour, you may hear the Sami language spoken - about 2,000 residents speak this dialect.
