- Look for tours that take you to smaller, lesser known temples (that are just as impressive as the tourist magnets) where you can get away from the crowds.
- Buy yourself a versatile sarong early on when you arrive in Bali. You will need one for every temple you enter.
- Bring malaria pills and heavy strength mosquito repellant for Borneo.
- Ask your guide what the fair price is before negotiating for those souvenirs at the market.
- River boat cruises through Tanjung Putting National Park are on small, private boats, so they are easily customizable. Let your guide know exactly what you’re interested in, whether it’s trekking, visiting traditional villages, bird watching, or following the orangutans, and they will make sure it happens.
- Narrow your trip to just a few islands to really experience their unique landscapes and cultures.
- Drivers advertising their services on the street usually do not speak English as well as you’d expect, which can lead to frustrations. Go with a reputable tour company to hit major tourist destinations and enjoy your guide’s expert commentary.
- Credit cards are still not widely accepted, especially in smaller warungs and temples, so make sure you have plenty of cash on hand.
- Public transportation can be very confusing. There are no bus schedules or regulations for tourists. Hiring a private driver or booking with a small group tour is well worth the money for all day or multiday trips.
