What travelers are saying

"I did the EBC trek with Intrepid in September and October. Our group missed the first 3 days of the planned 12 day trek due to bad weather. There was a real fear we would not be able to do the trek at all. Intrepid sorted out additional accommodation and flights once we were able to fly. Our group made it to EBC by missing the 2 acclimation days on the accent and descending in 3 days instead of 4. This was only possible because of the awesome staff (guides and porters) employed by Intrepid and by Intrepid's backroom staff making alternative accommodation and flight arrangements for us."

Cultural

What travelers are saying

"This was a tremendous trip. Nice mix of New Zealand s spectacular scenery and cultural highlights. In Australia Cairns was interesting for culture and great barrier reef, which is unfortunetely getting bleached due to rising ocean temps. The Sydney Opera house was amazing. Our Auastralian guide was knowledgeable and very organized. Only complaint was that at 37 folks the trip was too large in our opinion."

Phuket Tour Selection Trips

  • Phuket is quite large. It is possible to see the main attractions over a few days, but try to give yourself some extra time to enjoy the beaches and not rush.
  • Weather in Phuket is typically warm and temperate, but it can get stormy between May and October.
  • While a lot of the beaches do get crowded, it’s still very possible to find less well known areas to enjoy a secluded beach day. Ask your tour guide for advice on the best hidden beachs.

Additional details

Where is Phuket?

Phuket is the southern province of Thailand, consisting of the largest island of the country with the same name and other small 32 islands. Lying on the western coast of Thailand with the Andaman Sea coastline, the island is connected to the north through Sarasin Bridge in Phang Nga Province.

Getting to Phuket

There are three ways to approach Phuket; by air, through the bus, and on the ferry. There is only one airport in Phuket with one terminal for international flights and one terminal for domestic flights and is hence very crowded, especially during peak season. The airport is located in the north of the island while most of the tourist beaches are towards the south, so you have to take long rides to reach there.

You can hire a metered taxi right at the airport, but the better way is to have a pre-arranged taxi by your hotel or diving center. A cheaper way is to get into a shared minibus that will cost you four times less than the taxi but will first take you to the travel agent who tries to convince you to get into their accommodation.

For budget travelers, long distance buses are a good method of traveling, especially the night buses. If you book a daytime bus, you get the advantage of enjoying the surrounding scenery and local areas on the way. The bus terminal is in the main city, within walking distance of many hotels and guesthouses. You can hire a taxi to go further toward the beaches.

Phuket is an island, so another way to reach there is through a ferry. Not from all the places, but you can get ferries from Phi Phi Island, Koh Lanta Island, and Krabi. Located towards the east of the city, Phuket ferry terminal is not accessible on foot, but if you make an advance booking through a travel agent, they include your hotel to terminal transfer in the package.

What to wear

To have relaxed and entertaining Phuket tours, you need to pack something light and comfortable to deal with the tropical heat. During selecting your dresses, you need to be very careful about certain things. Because people here are really modest about their dressing. Your appearance and choice of dressing have an effect on how you get treated in Thailand.

Avoid wearing revealing clothes like spaghetti strap shirts, sleeveless shirts, etc. It is considered very inappropriate if your dress is revealing your cleavage or butt cheek. Swimwear is good only on the Phuket beaches, but as soon as you get out of there, you need to cover yourself with a cardigan or sarong, or can even change the dress.

When visiting a temple, make sure your shoulders are covered and legs to the knees. Locals are very strict about the dress codes in the temples.

Is Phuket safe?

Phuket is overall a safe place to visit like many other places in the world, and the crime rate towards the tourists is also rare. Most frequent are pick-pocketing and drinking scams that you can avoid by following simple precautions.

  • Avoid walking alone in dark alleys late at night.
  • Don't try to argue with any drunk locals.
  • Don't rent jet ski equipment as it is prohibited legally.
  • Never travel without travel insurance to avoid any accidental expenses.
  • Follow the dress code, especially entering religious buildings and temples.
  • Insulting the government or royalty is illegal, so be sure not to say anything about that.
  • Stay away from the drugs in every manner, or you might have to face heavy penalties and imprisonment.
  • Avoid mingling with strangers and taking helping offers from them.
