Pyramids of Giza Tour Selection Trips

  • If you are interested in taking a camel or horse ride around the Pyramids, try booking your ride early. This way you won’t be advertised to by more hawkers as you continue with your visit.
  • Don’t climb the Pyramids -- it’s illegal. However, sometimes one of the police will offer to let you climb on of the smaller pyramids. You can accept his offer without fear of getting arrested, though expect him to ask for a tip when you get back down.
  • The best view of the Pyramids for a photograph is on the sand dunes, on the opposite of the city of Giza. It takes about 10 minutes to walk to this area, and you will be walking through sand to get there. If you think this may be too physically demanding, depending on your fitness or age, many tourists prefer to take a camel or horse to this location. This also makes for a great photo!

What is the museum at the Pyramids of Giza?

The museum located directly in front of the Pyramids of Giza is the Giza Solar Boat Museum. Inside is one of the greatest archaeological finds of our time: a nearly perfectly preserved ancient Egyptian ship, buried for the pharaoh Khufu to take with him into the afterlife. This ship has been identified as the world’s oldest intact ship, and provides extremely valuable insight into ancient Egyptian life.

The function of the ship is not completely understood, although many experts believe it is a “solar ship” -- or a spiritual vessel meant to carry the pharaoh into the heavens with the sun god, Ra. You may learn more about this ship if you take an educational tour at the site

Weather and What to Wear at the Pyramids of Giza

The weather at the Pyramids remains warm year-round, and is guaranteed to be dry. In the summer months (April to October) temperatures average in the low 90’s (Fahrenheit) or the low 30’s (Celsius). In the winter, temperatures are typically in the low 70’s (Fahrenheit) or the low 20’s (Celsius).

Aliens and the Pyramids

One popular conspiracy theory surrounding the Pyramids of Giza is that they were built by aliens. The theory suggests that such a task would have been physically impossible for the ancient Egyptians, who lacked the tools and technology to complete them. Your tour of the pyramids will likely go into some of these theories in depth!

Egyptian Pyramid Facts

  • The Pyramids of Giza are only 3 over over 140 pyramids in all of Egypt.
  • They are the only remaining ancient wonders of the world.
  • The pyramids were originally encased in polished limestone, which made them appear white and reflective.
  • Nobody knows for sure how many people worked on constructing the pyramids, but estimates are generally around 100,000 people, which would have been about 10% of the population at the time.
  • Each of the pyramids aligns perfectly with the stars in the constellation of Orion. Many experts think this was intentional.
  • The temperature inside the tombs of the pyramids is consistently around 60 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • The pyramids were not actually built by slaves or prisoners. Instead, they were built by peasants who were well-fed and given tax breaks.
  • No writing or hieroglyphics have ever been found inside of the pyramids.
  • The pyramids were built on the west bank of the Nile, which was associated with the realm of the dead.
  • Each of the stones on each pyramid was hand chiseled with a copper pick, although there is no consensus on how the stones were moved.
  • One of the smaller pyramids, Menkaure’s Pyramid, is damaged on its north side. This happened when one of Egypt’s later sultans, Al-Aziz, attempted to destroy the structure. He found the task too difficult, however, and soon gave up.
