What travelers are saying

"We just returned from our fifth VBT trip - this time to the Dolomites. It was a great trip and we are adding it to our "best" VBT trip list, along with the Czech Republic and the Tuscan Coast. Our friends at home thought we must be biking maniacs to bike in the Dolomite mountains, but we told them we would be in the flat valleys. Actually, we were wrong - much of the biking is not even flat, it is downhill! One day we started high in the valley above Merano, Italy, at scenic Lake Resia, and biked downhill back to Merano on a beautiful dedicated bike path along the Adige river. Our guides were fantastic. Martin is from Bolzano and is a font of information about the South Tyrol region. Christian, from the south, has a classic cheerful Italian personality and told us many facts (and jokes) about Italian idiosyncrasies. As always, the hotel accommodations (and breakfasts!) were excellent - better than we would sign up for if we on our own vacation."

Visits

Croatia, Diocletian's Palace, Dubrovnik, Split

Highlights

  • What better way to see the historic towns, protected forests and stunning islands of Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast than aboard a private yacht? All aboard for a week in paradise.
  • Explore beautiful Split, where tradition, modernity and a variety of European influences come together. A visit to the Diocletian’s Palace reveals some of the Adriatic Coast’s most important surviving Roman buildings.
  • Bliss out on Brac’s world famous Zlatni Rat beach, a spit of white sand jutting out into turquoise waters.
  • Opened to the public only in 1989, the island of Vis boasts coastal scenery and a military history just waiting to be discovered. Also, the local vugava wine is rather nice.
  • Stari Grad, Hvar’s Old Town, is quite literally one of the oldest towns in Europe, and a charming one at that. It provides a great base from which to explore the island.

What travelers are saying

"We joined the Intrepid “Real Italy Food Tour” and enjoyed it thoroughly. Our tour guide, Micol, was very knowledgeable and provided us with lots of good information. It seems Micol knew many of the staff of the venues we visited, including the pasta making class we attended. Our group of 11 travelers was extremely compatible, which greatly added to the fun and enjoyment."

Additional details

Split is the central and largest city in the Dalmatian Coast and the second largest city in Croatia. Visitors to Split use the city as their embarking city to tour the Croatian coastline or as a base point for day trips to the surrounding countryside.

Including a few days in Split at the beginning or end of your trip to Croatia will provide a look into how Croatia’s past and present has converged. Split includes activities for all travelers whether you are looking for history, food, adventure, or a relaxing stroll next to the sea.

Weather in Split, Croatia

Split maintains a typical Mediterranean climate, like most of southern Croatia. The summers are very warm and dry and the winters are cool and wet. The shoulder seasons are pleasant with plenty of sun and moderate temperatures. The weather in Split can vary from day to day. Including layers and an umbrella are essential items to include in your packing list.

The best time to visit Split is between May and October. These months are the high season for both Split and the Dalmatian Coast and provides the best weather for day trips, beaches, and tours. Try to avoid July and August as those will be the hottest and busiest months of the year.

Dalmatian Coast Cruises

Split is the largest city on the Dalmatian Coast, and thus is the where many Croatian and Dalmatian Coast guided tours begin. With its bustling harbor and port, the city maintains a constant flow of tourists and goods during the year.

Croatian voyages leave Split to explore the Croatian islands since Split is only a short trip away from a few of the most beautiful islands in the Adriatic -- Hvar, Broc, and Korcula. These tours are typically on large cruise ships or smaller yachts.

However, for travelers who are not traveling with large cruise lines or tours can still visit the islands. Ferries run between Split and many of the islands off the coast. For a more personal tour, you can also charter a boat from the marina to hop between islands. These boats range in style and price depending on how long your trip is and what level of comfort you are looking for.

Is Split Safe to Visit?

Overall, Croatia is a safe destination for travelers. Major crimes are low in Split. However, it is important to remember that since Split is a major tourist destination, pickpocketing is common, especially around the main attractions of Diocletian’s Palace and the Riva, Split’s waterfront.

Additionally, travelers should be cautious of scams and overcharging. This is most common in bars, restaurants, and tour guides. Make sure you pay attention to your receipt and it’s best to use an approved or certified tour company when looking for tour guides in the area.

Split for Families

Split has a wide variety of attractions for families of all types and interests. Well-supplied with history, museums, and beaches, there is plenty to keep everyone in the family entertained on your trip to Split.

1. Beaches

Split has countless beaches for families to enjoy the Croatian sunshine and fun. Many of the beaches are only a short walk from the old town and others, only a bus ride away. Some of the beaches are sandy and perfect for sunbathing, while others are more rocky and pebbly. A few of the most popular beaches are Trstenik, Bacvice, and Bene.

2. Walking tours

Split is made up of a conglomeration of different civilizations. The powerful empires of Rome, Venice, and the Ottoman Turks all inhabited this coastal area one point in history. Daily walking tours are offered by companies to show you around the old town and give you a peek into Split’s culture.

3. Marjan Forest Park

Marjan Forest Park is a forested hill that sits on the Split peninsula just a 20-minute walk from the old town. The park offers activities such as bike riding, hiking, kayaking, and rock climbing. Also next to the hill are some of the cities most important museums, such as the Museum of Croatian Archeological Monuments and the Ivan Mestrovic Gallery.

4. Froggyland

Froggyland is a taxidermy museum that showcases over 500 frogs taking part in everyday human activities. Frogs can be seen sewing, giving music lessons, and partaking in water sports. If you are looking for an unusual and quirky activity, then you will love the uniqueness of this remarkable museum.
