In many ways, Copenhagen is the perfect introduction to Europe. Quintessential cobblestoned streets, friendly people, classic food especially of the pastry variety, canals, churches, cafes, and a fairytale legacy. The Little Mermaid statue, in commemoration of Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen is a major tourist draw - just one of the can't miss stops on a visit to Copenhagen.

Top Historical Sights In Copenhagen

  1. Rosenborg slot: If you're looking for that famed Denmark fairytale castle feel than you'll want to pay a visit to Copenhagen's infamous Rosenborg Slot renaissance castle. 2. Rundetaarn (The Round Tower): The oldest functioning observatory in Europe lies in the heart of Copenhagen. It is quite the trek, but the climb will be worth your while. You will embark on a unique spiral walkway, stopping to check out the library and church that are also located within the structure, and once reaching the top, a gorgeous view of Copenhagen awaits.
  3. Frederiksborg Slot: This historical castle built in the early 1600s is now home to the Museum of Natural History. The elaborately decorated rooms with portraits, furniture, and decorative art invite visitors on a journey through Danish history and culture from the late Middle Ages to the present. The land surrounding the castle is enveloped in two lush green gardens.
  4. Nyhaven: Originally, Nyhavn was a bustling commercial port where ships from all around the world would come to dock. Sailors flooded the pubs and ale hoses that surrounded the port. Today, locals and travelers come here to relax at the cafes and restaurants that have replaced the old taverns. You can take a guided bike tour or relaxing canal cruise around Nyhaven.
  5. Visit CarlsbergThe Carlsberg Brewery was founded in 1847 by J.C. Jacobsen and is home to the largest collection of unopened beer bottles in the world. Take a tour to learn about the history of the brewery, the amazing architecture, and sample some of Copenhagen's finest tasting beers.

Exploring the Hans Christian Andersen Legacy

Hans Christian Andersen was considered by many to be a spectacular novelist and playwright of fairy tales, but many do not know that he also wrote successful novels, dramas, and comedies as well. Andersen himself regretted that the fairy tales threatened to overshadow everything else he had done although these are what truly made him stand out above other writers gaining him the title as “father of fairy tales”. His legacy has lived on through the childrens books.

The sources of Andersen's stories were usually folk tales. He would create new literary works based on this folklore and turn it into an amazing piece of literature. Some of his most famous works are “The Princess and the Pea,” “The Ugly Duckling,” “The Little Match Girl,” The Nightingale,” “The Red Shoes,” “The Emperor's New Clothes” and “The Tinderbox”.

When visiting Copenhagen there are many places you can go to experience his legacy. You can visit the three different houses in Nyhavn that he lived in where he wrote some of his first fairy tales. Take a trip to the Fairy Tale House - an interactive museum with hand-written manuscripts, live readings and Hans Christian Andersen's study, and fairy-tale artefacts.

On H.C. Andersens Boulevard you can view one of the two statues of Andersen in Copenhagen and you will find the other one in The King’s Garden. The infamous Little Mermaid Statue is linked to Anderson and is a national symbol of Denmark. Go to the lovely park, Assistens Kirkegård in Nørrebro, to see where the writer is buried.

On warmer days many locals stop off at Islands Brygge Harbour Bath to take a dip. These pools ar right in the center of Copenhagen and have a great view of the city's skyline. There's a large lawn in front of the pools where you can find ball games, a spot to sunbathe, and possibly have a picnic.

Take on Copenhagen by sea with a fun kayak tour. Guides will take you through the city center, the Opera, Christiania, and the canals. They know of all the best places that you can reach only by kayak and will ensure that you have a smooth and safe ride.

What better way to see the beautiful Danish countryside than by horseback. You can take a guided riding tour along the shoreline and see the lush greenery that Copenhagen has to offer. You can also choose to saddle up and groom your horse prior to riding as a way to connect with the animal.

Dyrehaven Park is known for its massive deer population and beautiful oak trees with wide open spaces. It is also home to Eremitage Palace which hosts Dyrehavsbakken, the oldest working amusement park in the world. It has been updated to include circus performances, roller coasters, cabaret, and other carnival style amenities.
