Copenhagen Tours & Travel Guide
In many ways, Copenhagen is the perfect introduction to Europe. Quintessential cobblestoned streets, friendly people, classic food especially of the pastry variety, canals, churches, cafes, and a fairytale legacy. The Little Mermaid statue, in commemoration of Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen is a major tourist draw - just one of the can't miss stops on a visit to Copenhagen.
Hans Christian Andersen was considered by many to be a spectacular novelist and playwright of fairy tales, but many do not know that he also wrote successful novels, dramas, and comedies as well. Andersen himself regretted that the fairy tales threatened to overshadow everything else he had done although these are what truly made him stand out above other writers gaining him the title as “father of fairy tales”. His legacy has lived on through the childrens books.
The sources of Andersen's stories were usually folk tales. He would create new literary works based on this folklore and turn it into an amazing piece of literature. Some of his most famous works are “The Princess and the Pea,” “The Ugly Duckling,” “The Little Match Girl,” The Nightingale,” “The Red Shoes,” “The Emperor's New Clothes” and “The Tinderbox”.
When visiting Copenhagen there are many places you can go to experience his legacy. You can visit the three different houses in Nyhavn that he lived in where he wrote some of his first fairy tales. Take a trip to the Fairy Tale House - an interactive museum with hand-written manuscripts, live readings and Hans Christian Andersen's study, and fairy-tale artefacts.
On H.C. Andersens Boulevard you can view one of the two statues of Andersen in Copenhagen and you will find the other one in The King’s Garden. The infamous Little Mermaid Statue is linked to Anderson and is a national symbol of Denmark. Go to the lovely park, Assistens Kirkegård in Nørrebro, to see where the writer is buried.
On warmer days many locals stop off at Islands Brygge Harbour Bath to take a dip. These pools ar right in the center of Copenhagen and have a great view of the city's skyline. There's a large lawn in front of the pools where you can find ball games, a spot to sunbathe, and possibly have a picnic.
Take on Copenhagen by sea with a fun kayak tour. Guides will take you through the city center, the Opera, Christiania, and the canals. They know of all the best places that you can reach only by kayak and will ensure that you have a smooth and safe ride.
What better way to see the beautiful Danish countryside than by horseback. You can take a guided riding tour along the shoreline and see the lush greenery that Copenhagen has to offer. You can also choose to saddle up and groom your horse prior to riding as a way to connect with the animal.
Dyrehaven Park is known for its massive deer population and beautiful oak trees with wide open spaces. It is also home to Eremitage Palace which hosts Dyrehavsbakken, the oldest working amusement park in the world. It has been updated to include circus performances, roller coasters, cabaret, and other carnival style amenities.
Copenhagen is truly a winter wonderland! This part of Denmark takes holidays to a whole new level with streets lit up with christmas lights, people adorned in holiday attire, and smells of delicious pastries fill the air.
Tivoli gardens, with its music events, holiday celebrations, and art installations transforms into any travelers winters dream. More than half a million lights are used throughout the park to light up the rides and architecture. You can visit the park any time of year, but many people prefer it during the holidays, because winter time brings out the gardens aesthetic appeal.
If you're looking to get into the holiday spirit then make a stop at one of Copenhagen's Christmas markets. You can purchase great souvenirs to take home at the classic wooden stalls covered in festive lights. Local foods like gløgg, a hot mulled wine with raisins and almonds, as well as aebleskiver, small round pancakes served with powdered sugar and fresh jam are served here.
