Akureyri Weather

Like most of Iceland, the weather in Akureyri is surprisingly consistent year-round. The warmest time of year (and as a result, probably the most pleasant and the best time to visit) is between the months of June to August, where temperatures average in the high 40’s (Fahrenheit). The coldest time of year falls between January to March, where temperatures average below freezing, at around 30 degrees Fahrenheit.

As a result, it is going to feel cold all year, although even in the heart of winter there is a low chance of snow. The best time to visit is during the summer when it is a little warmer, and when you have the most sunshine each day.

What to Wear in Akureyri

In Akureyri, dressing warmly is a necessity, no matter the time of year. One key to this is wearing thick and well insulating layers, wool and cashmere are highly recommended. If you are planning on doing any physical activity, such as hiking or biking, you should wear synthetic and sweat-wicking materials as your base layers, so you clothing dries quickly and you aren’t left damp and cold.

No matter the time of year, you should also pack hats, gloves, scarves, and warm socks in Iceland. You will be thankful for these after you’ve spent an hour outdoors and are still toasty warm. Make sure to also wear sturdy, waterproof shows. Any snow on the ground will melt, and the ground in Iceland is notoriously muddy anyways. Your feet will appreciate remaining dry after a long day on your tour of the outdoors!

How far is Akureyri from Reykjavik?

By car, Iceland’s northern capital is about 6 hours away on Ring Road. This may be your only option in winter, as most other roads in Iceland are unpaved and close after a snowfall.

If you want a more scenic route, however, and are fine with taking a couple stops along the way, take the famous Golden Circle route and then veer off at the F35. This will take you at least 3 days to complete, though it is a great option if you choose to go on a self-guided tour of Iceland.

If you don’t want to rent a car, or your tour offers transportation, your options boil down to flying or taking a bus. A bus ride takes about 6 hours and follows Ring Road. Your other option is taking a plane. Flights are now offered with regularly frequency, and though they are the most expensive option, a flight between the two cities is a quick 45 minutes, and this may be worth it to you.
