Day 1:

Arrive In Anchorage

Welcome to Alaska! Meet your Tour Director this evening between 5 pm and 8 pm in the hotel reception area.

Day 2:

Anchorage–Wasilla–Alaska Railroad–Denali National Park

Traveling north into the majestic wilds of Alaska, visit the IDITAROD HEADQUARTERS, home of the world-famous dogsled race. Arrive in Talkeetna, the jumping-off point for climbers attempting to summit Mount McKinley (Denali), the highest peak in North America at 20,320 feet. Board the historic ALASKA RAILROAD for a scenic trip to Denali National Park. Enjoy dinner at the Murie Science & Learning Center, followed by an exclusive [LF] PRESENTATION on Denali National Park by a local Naturalist. (Breakfast, Dinner)

Day 3:

Denali National Park

Today, a guided tour takes you into 6-million-acre DENALI NATIONAL PARK to explore the majestic wilderness and seek out grizzly bear, caribou, moose, and other wildlife! Your afternoon is free for optional adventures such as float trips, a dogsled demonstration, a helicopter ride over the park, or a delicious dinner and rollicking musical comedy performed in a camp house reminiscent of the Gold Rush era. (Breakfast, Lunch)

Day 4:

Denali National Park–Fairbanks

This morning, spend a little more time marveling at the wonder of Denali National Park. Then, enjoy a friendly atmosphere during lunch at the [LF] 49th STATE BREWERY, where you’ll have a chance to sample some local specialties. Travel into the heart of Alaska to Fairbanks, where the remainder of the day is at leisure. (Breakfast, Lunch)

Day 5:

Fairbanks

This morning, board the sternwheeler Discovery for a CRUISE on the Chena and Tanana Rivers, with a stop at a recreated Chena Indian Village to learn about Athabascan Native culture. Later, visit the UNIVERSITY OF ALASKA–FAIRBANKS MUSEUM during your Fairbanks city tour, and also stop at the Trans-Alaska Oil Pipeline. (Breakfast)

Day 6:

Fairbanks–Dawson City

Continuing the journey into Gold Rush history, motor over the Top of the World Highway and enter the Yukon. Passing through the village of Chicken, today promises to be filled with breathtaking scenery. Tonight you have reservations at DIAMOND TOOTH GERTIE’S, featuring ragtime music, can-can girls, and an old-fashioned casino. (Breakfast)

Day 7:

Dawson City

Today, step back in time at the site of CLAIM #1, where the first gold strike was made. Continue to the ROBERT SERVICE INTERPRETIVE CENTER and learn about the “Bard of the Yukon” and the numerous poems and ballads he composed while exploring this remote area. The remainder of the day is at leisure. Your Tour Director will have suggestions for additional sightseeing, shopping, and dining. (Breakfast)

Day 8:

Dawson–Whitehorse

Today, trace the trail of the gold seekers on their way to the Klondike. View the Five Finger Rapids, which once posed a major obstacle to the hordes of fortune seekers stampeding into the Yukon. Your day concludes in Whitehorse, capital of the Yukon. (Breakfast)

Day 9:

Whitehorse

A city tour stops at the YUKON BERINGIA INTERPRETIVE CENTRE, where you can meet the Ice Age giant mammals that once ruled the ancient subcontinent. Stop at the SS KLONDIKE RIVERBOAT and learn about its importance on the Yukon River in the Gold Rush days. Later, head to Whitehorse’s premier dogsled facility, [LF] MUKTUK ADVENTURES, where you will personally meet the huskies and their trainers. Afterward, enjoy a special Taste of the Yukon dinner. (Breakfast, Dinner)

Day 10:

Day 15:

Scenic Cruising: Glacier Bay

This Biosphere Reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site protects a unique ecosystem in an ever-changing glacial landscape. National Park rangers accompany the ship, adding expert commentary to the day’s events. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 16:

Haines

Nestled on the shores of America’s longest fjord, Haines enjoys a spectacular setting. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 17:

Juneau

Visit one of the most remote capital cities—Juneau. Accessible only by air and water, Juneau is located at the base of two towering mountains in the heart of Alaska’s Inside Passage, and is home to a rich Gold Rush history, Native culture, wildlife, and a wealth of natural wonders. Shop for gold nuggets, visit the stately Governor’s Mansion, saunter through the swinging doors of the historic Red Dog Saloon, or visit mighty Mendenhall Glacier, an impressive river of ice that is 12 miles long and 1.5 miles wide. The Vietnam/Cambodia Mekong cruise on the Avalon Saigon was our First river cruise and overall it was fantastic. Excellent service on board and outstanding guides for the shore excursions. The Crew/staff were friendly and professional. All of it conducted like a symphony by our excellent Cruise director, Khan. The only thing we would like to see improved is a two nights stay at the Vinpearl, Halong bay (one night is not adequate). Thank you Avalon and the Crew of the Saigon for making our trip memorable.

This was my first cruise, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. I was delighted at all the off-boat activities available to us, and I was gratified to experience so much of the country’s culture from the locally hired guides. The meals, drinks, and service on the boat were exceptional—and delivered in an approachable and welcoming way. The experience was world class!

We submitted a critical review in January of the insurance payout delay due to contracting COVID at the beginning of the trip. We did acknowledge and wish to confirm that the crew and the cruise director, John did everything thing possible to make our confinement bearable. Since our critical review was based largely upon the slow 6 month delay did finally pay a satisfactory amount, we wish to amend our review up to 4 stars. We filed in August, 2022 and were paid what we expected but not until February, 2023.

If you are use to Avalon in Europe BEWARE of Egypt. First it is not an Avalon boat - this was not made clear prior to arriving. In fact you share a boat with other non- Avalon cruises. The quality is significantly below the standard we were expecting based on our two prior Avalon experiences in France and The Danube - but the price remains just as high. The people (staff/guides) try hard and are sweet but the level of disorganization is monumental. itinerary continual changes, which would be OK if there was a process in place to have app match what gets sent via email, or there were paper schedules left in a defined place at hotels. We were told about the schedule for the first two days in Cairo verbally (after an 11 flight) as we were driving from airport to hotel - no hand out, no Avalon desk at hotel that we were told about to check back in, then schedule changed again and only found out accidentally.
The hotel in Cairo was lovely - but once on the boat on the Nile, it was so tacky, tired, smelly old carpet - the complete opposite of the Avalon boats we had been on. The worst part was that we introduced our friends to Avalon on this trip - and we are sooo embarrassed that this is the experience they are having. They certainly won’t become Avalon travelers.
My favorite was when we found out about the boat NOT being an Avalon boat - the guide said ‘don’t expect this to be like the European Avalon experiences - this will be good for Egypt’ WHAT!!!!?!?! Are you kidding. Maybe Avalon and Egypt need to get their act together. This has so damaged my view of Avalon we are not sure we will ever use them again - and we loved them prior to this experience. Deceptive, over rated, really so very disappointing.

We bought the expensive trip insurance through one of the sponsored companies. After being in Switzerland for 9 days where nobody was wearing masks we did not feel well on the bus ride from Zurich to Basel to board the boat. We immediately took precaution by asking for a Covid test. The man who gave the test was very quick with the steps and did not wait the prescribed time to test. The results were negative and we were invited to be part of the bon voyage celebration and dinner. The next day my wife felt worse and we asked for another Covid test. This time a woman took the time to do it correctly and my wife was positive. I was there also positive the next day. We agreed to stay in our cabin for the 8 day duration of the trip. The staff treated us well and room service food was appreciated. The Cruise director, Robert was kind thoughtful and generously upgraded our room. Unfortunately, 6 months since then insurance company has yet to pay for our loss of all the attributes of cruising on the Rhine. We would give it a second try but are leery of the lack of service by the insurance company.

Additional Information

Notes:

This vacation visits remote regions where some facilities are not up to the first-class standards you expect from Globus. However, we have selected the best available hotels that satisfy our high standards of cleanliness and comfort.

While wildlife in Alaska is frequently seen, early season (early June) and late-season (September) departures offer even greater opportunities for viewing a variety of wildlife. Departures after mid-August will enjoy blazing fall colors.

Cruise itineraries are provided by Holland America Line and are up to date at time of publishing. Your travel documents will contain the most current information.
