Bolivia Tours & Travel Guide

Bolivia Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Bolivia may be the most underrated country in South America. Sandwiched among better-known Brazil, Peru, Chile, and Argentina, Bolivia has its own share of Andes mountains, Amazon rainforest, and ancient ancient ruins, as well as a share of the largest lake on the continent (Titicaca) and the unearthly 4,000 square mile Uyuni salt flats. Its capital, La Paz, sits at almost 12,000 feet, and its population is mostly a diverse mix of indigenous peoples.

Bolivia is an otherworldly, surreal landscape of lagoons and red lakes and glittering salt flats. There is no where else like it in this world, and travelers have started to catch on to the magic.

Why travel to Bolivia?

While Bolivia may not be a traditional tourist destination, meaning it’s not exactly set up for easy tourism, Bolivia should be on your list! The opportunity to learn about their customs, see the diverse landscape and the Bolivian wildlife is worthy enough for a visit. Visitors will be met with friendly locals who are ecstatic to share their home country. Most people rave about the authenticity of Bolivia upon returning from their trip.

Those who visit Bolivia will come back with tons of new knowledge. There are ample museums, ruins, and landmarks to explore the 2000+ years of history, including wars, protests, and revolutions. You’ll also learn about Cultural traditions. There are over 36 indigenous cultures in Bolivia, each with their own languages and way of life.

The best ways to learn about these traditions is by visiting the indigenous villages, which sometimes include homestays. If you’re short on time, in the city of La Paz, there is a walking tour that teaches tourists about the traditions and customs of Bolivia. Another way to learn about the culture of Bolivia is through experiencing it!

Bolivia has numerous festivals throughout the year, and it’s a great experience for travelers. One of the most popular festivals in all of South America is the Oruro Carnaval, which takes place in Oruru usually in February.

The geography itself is a reason to visit Bolivia. The array of landscapes make nearly every photo a good one. The scenery is diverse and beautiful no matter where you are in the country. Experience everything from cities, to red mountains and the andes, jungles, as well as lakes and of course, the largest salt flat on the planet.

What is Bolivia known for?

Bolivia is best known for its salt flats, and other high elevation beautiful scenery. Bolivia lays in the middle of the Andes mountains, the largest continental mountain range in the world. Salar de Uyuni is a 4,000 square mile salt flat. Salt flats are a thin layer of salt that stretches over an extremely flat surface, covered in shallow water. The Salar de Uyuni is often nicknamed the largest mirror in the world, as salt flats are known for their reflections.

Culturally, Bolivia is a popular destination for carnivals, especially the Carnaval de Oruru located in the town of Oruro. Around 400,000 individuals attend this festival each year. The festival features tens of thousands of dancers and musicians that fill the streets traditional dances.

For those seeking adventure, ride through the mountains on Yungas Road, another well known attraction in Bolivia. Known as the world’s most dangerous world, tourists can rent a bike and attempt to tackle this road. Stretching over 40 miles, those who take on this road will experience a 4,000 foot drop. The unpaved road, filled with cliffs, reaches 15,000 feet above sea level,.

Wildlife in Bolivia

Wildlife is abundant in Bolivia, one of the most bio-diverse countries in the world. Wildlife experiences are popular among visitors. Some popular ones include:

1. Jaguars in the wild at the San Miguelito Jaguar conservation, “a wildlife hotspot.” Jaguars are difficult to spot roaming in the wild, so visiting the conservation gives you the best opportunity to see a Jaguar. Increase the likelihood of encountering a jaguar by booking a tour with a professional.

2. Pink River Dolphins are found in the Bolivian Amazon. The dolphins are suspected to be pink because of the water temperature, and/or blood vessels being near the skin’s surface. Make sure to pick a responsible company that will allow you to get close with the mammal in ethical ways, without disturbing them. Consider visiting them during the night, where it’s said that the dolphins make an appearance.

3. Howler Monkeys that are sick or mistreated are sent to Parque Ambue Ari, a wildlife center that helps care for these monkeys. Other animal encounters include big cats, deer, and birds. Visitors can volunteer to help take care of the monkeys, and often end up extending their trip because of how amazing the animal interactions are. Very few opportunities allow you to get this close to monkeys, while doing such rewarding work.

Bolivia's Natural Wonders

This large landlocked South American country has varied terrain and culture thanks to borders with Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, Chile, and Peru.

The country is most famous for Salar de Uyuni, the world's largest salt flats. Here the high-altitude air is bone-dry, the ground an expanse of thick salt crust in hexagonal patterns, the horizon dotted with volcanoes. At some times of the year, a crystal layer of water covers the flats and serves as a giant mirror reflecting the sky. The flats are so endless and brilliantly white, Neil Armstrong saw this area from the moon and thought it was a glacier. Perspective is skewed on the ground and space impossible to judge.

Another must-see natural feature of Bolivia is Laguna Colorado. This destination actually boasts a combination of attractions. The lake itself is still, shallow, and best known for its startingly pink water. This sight, combined with the towering and jagged Andes in the background, will make you think you've ended up on alien planet. The abundant supply of plankton in the water also draws three different species of flamingo to the waters, and the occasional herd of alpaca that may wander by.

How to see the Bolivia salt flats

The best way to see the Bolivia salt flats is through a tour. Salar de Uyuni is pretty remote. Most tours start in the nearest city of Uyuni, but it’s also possible to take tours from larger cities such as La Paz, Sucre or Tupiza. If traveling to Uyuni before starting the tour, it’s possible to reach Uyuni by plane, train or bus.

Try to arrange travel to arrive in Uyuni the night before if that’s where you’re starting the tour, to give time for any travel delays if you come across them. That also gives you a good nights rest before embarking on seeing one of the most beautiful sights in the world! The bus between La Paz and Uyuni takes about 10.5 hours, and there are both day time and overnight buses.

There are different comfort levels depending on the price, but on a journey like this, it’s probably worth snagging a more expensive ride for the added comfort. Oruro and Sucre bus rides are long as well, averaging between 7-9 hours. Multi-day tours are recommended, because the travel is so far, and it gives you an opportunity to see much more of the landscapes that Bolivia offers.

Multi-day tours end near the Chilean border, so if you’re continuing your journey southbound, this is another good reason to go with a multi-day tour.

When booking your trip to Bolivia, consider the seasons and what you’re hoping to see at the Salar de Uyuni. You can’t go wrong with any time of the year, but the dry season and rainy season offers different experiences. The dry season runs from May-October, and you can expect to see dry geometric shapes in the salt flats. Days are shorter, but sunnier.

The rainy season runs from November to March, and the rain creates the mirror-like reflective surface. Both seasons offer temperatures around 60-80 degrees during the day.

The City of La Paz

The capital city of La Paz is the highest in the world, tucked into the Andean altiplano plateau near the country's western border with Peru. La Paz is surprisingly cosmopolitan, with old-world beauty and an aerial cable car system crisscrossing the surrounding peaks. The nearby western border of the country cuts through stunning Lake Titicaca. Lake Titicaca is well worth a visit for its high-altitude clarity and singular ancient culture centered on the lake. Most tours in Bolivia will include an excursion to the lake - so take advantage!
