Short Description

Trekked by more than half of humankind’s ancient world, modern day Sicily still offers off-the-beaten-path discoveries that reveal an undiscovered side of Italy. The Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, French, Germans, Spanish, Italians, and even the British have left an impression on this gorgeous island, and it shows in its diverse architecture, unique culture, and multinational cuisine. As you trace the sparkling coast from the flamboyant capital city of Palermo to the ultra-chic Taormina Riviera, you can expect stunning archaeological treasures, ancient works of art, and a warm welcome at every turn, and a cool gelato on every corner. Traditional granita, cannoli, Marsala wine, and a tasting at Dolceria Bonajuto, Sicily’s oldest chocolate factory, only sweeten the experience on this Undiscovered Tour of Sicily.

The Sicilian is a new tour this year. Globus needs to do a lot of work to fix this tour. First and foremost, you go to Italy for the food. Except for two places, the food on this tour was terrible. The restauranteurs are clearly taking advantage of Globus and ripping off the tourists. I believe it was in Syracuse we went on an extra tour to an island with a boat ride and dinner at a restaurant. Our guide said we would eat inside where it was air-conditioned. well, the owner did not turn the three air conditioners on. he charged a person who ordered a soda $2.50 a glass and people who ordered a beer were charged $4. The tour plan clearly states everyone is entitled to one drink. When our tour director went to him to complain and get a refund he refused. The meal we got was the worst of the trip. Everything was fried, deep fried vegetables and fried sardine and a rice ball, no salad, no pasta, no dessert. Most of the other food was no better, we were never served a meat dish and any place.
Our tour director was also far from the best. He has never done this tour, we were his first victims. He lives in Rome and not Sicily. He didn't know where some of the places we were going to were so you would see him asking store owners where his next stop was. he was very disorganized, constantly changing times to meet and places to meet. all in all, this was my third Globus tour and it will be the last. there are better tour companies. Globus has clearly declined in service. The hotels were clearly not up to expected standards. the breakfast was mostly sub-par and we were not at one hotel that offered eggs or omelets made to order. Just pre-made scrambled eggs. And if we were served breakfast before the hotels official opening time, we would minimal offerings and the standard menu would not come out until later. As stated, a new tour, don't go on it until they get new restaurants to go to and qualified tour directors.

Our guide (Billy Guiliana) was highly energetic, positive, and knowledgeable. His English is excellent and his communication of the itinerary was always clear and concise.

Not to leave our driver out of the praise, his name was Daniel (I’m sorry, but I don’t recall his last name). Daniel’s mastery of that huge bus on narrow, city streets was impressive.

While the sites are usually great...information about them can be read. It is the people who truly make the experience memorable. Our tour guide(s) were personable and informative..and the other guests were friendly and fun to be with.
