Short Description
It’s Iceland just as you imagined it would be! On our Incredible Iceland tour with round-trip airfare from the U.S., we take you on a journey through the country’s picturesque landscapes, and you may even witness the miracle of the spectacular Aurora Borealis! Your trip begins with a tour of Reykjavik, visiting the Hallgrimskirkja church, museums, and more. You’ll also have some leisure time here or you can take an optional tour the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. On an evening in Reykjavik, we’ll take you away from the city to hunt for the Northern Lights. Explore the spectacular South Coast, stopping at the Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls, sea cliffs of Dyrholaey, Black Sand Beaches (Reynisfjara), and the quaint coastal town of Vik. Continue onward to discover the Golden Circle’s top highlights—Thingvellir National Park, the Geysir hot springs, and Gullfoss Waterfall. After these exciting adventures around the country, unwind in soothing mineral-rich hot spring water at the Blue Lagoon.
Itinerary
Day 1: Depart from the U.S.
Your tour includes airfare from the U.S. You’ll take a nonstop overnight flight to Reykjavik on Icelandair. You’ll want to eat dinner prior to departure or be prepared to purchase a meal en route since Icelandair does not provide meal service on this flight. Also, as the flight is short, try to sleep as much as possible while in the air to avoid jet lag. Passengers who did not purchase flights will join the tour in.
Day 2: Arrive in Reykjavik/Welcome Breakfast/City Tour/Northern Lights Excursion
Meals: Breakfast
Get ready for a full day after an early arrival in the world’s northernmost capital, known for its creative soul and eye-popping design. You’ll be greeted at the airport and escorted to a restaurant in a nearby village for a welcome breakfast and orientation briefing with your group. Now energized, we’ll head to Reykjavik for a city tour. Highlights range from historic spots (like one of the oldest parliaments in the world) to the landmark Hallgrimskirkja church with its impressive tower, as well as the dazzling “Pearl,” a museum with a rotating glass dome (entrance to Observation deck included Oct 2021 onward), Asmundur Sveinsson Sculpture museum and Hofdi House, where presidents Reagan and Gorbachev held a summit that marked the end of the Cold War. After checking in to our centrally located hotel, you’ll have free time in the afternoon and evening to relax and explore. Tonight will be our first opportunity to view the magical, colorful display across the night sky known as the northern lights. Again, we must stress that there is no guarantee you will see the northern lights, but your smarTours® guide will make every effort! If the weather doesn’t cooperate, the excursion will be rescheduled for another evening. And don’t forget, your overnight in Vik affords the chance to see the northern lights at their best.

Day 3: Reykjavik/Optional Wonders Of Snaefellsnes Excursion
Meals: Breakfast
Today is a free day for independent exploring in or around Reykjavik, or you can join a fascinating full-day optional excursion to the spectacular Snaefellsnes peninsula. See optional tours for more details on this must-see destination. There are several additional exciting optional tours available to book as well.
Day 4: Reykjavik/Seljalandsfoss & Skogarfoss Waterfalls/Vik/Northern Lights Experience
Meals: Breakfast & Dinner
Our journey takes us through the stunning and diverse landscapes of Iceland’s south coast. This is the land of Njal’s Saga, a region of breathtaking scenery and legendary stories. On our guided excursion, we’ll encounter the dramatic sea cliffs of Dyrholaey and spectacular waterfalls of Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss, as well as unforgettable views of Hekla and Eyjafjallajokul volcanoes. Tonight’s destination is the remote village of Vik, known for its black-sand beaches and considered one of the most magical places to see the northern lights. After dinner together in our countryside hotel, we can simply stroll outside to view this amazing phenomenon!

Day 5: Vik/Geysir/Gulfoss/Thingvellir/Reykjavik
Meals: Breakfast
Our loop of incredible Iceland continues along the Golden Circle, which showcases the country’s most spectacular natural sights. Our first stop is the Geysir hot spring area and the lively Strokkur, which spouts water every 30 minutes. Get your cameras ready for an exciting show! We’ll head to the famous Gullfoss (translated as “Golden Falls”) with its spectacular two-tiered cascade. Next is Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site where the ancient Viking parliament met for centuries on the shores of Iceland’s largest lake. Here, we’ll witness the geological phenomenon of tectonic plates drifting apart. Later, we’ll return to Reykjavik for an evening at leisure.

Day 6: Reykjavik/Reykjanes Peninsula/Blue Lagoon
Meals: Breakfast & Dinner
Today you’ll dip into Iceland’s fascinating history, unique geothermal wonders and one of its most popular attractions. Our exploration includes Hafnarfjordur, built on an ancient lava flow; the deep, mysterious Lake Kleifarvatn; geothermal areas at Krisuvik and Gunnuhver; the fishing village of Grindavik; and the country’s oldest lighthouse. We’ve saved the most relaxing stop for last, the famous Blue Lagoon, where you’ll bathe in mineral-rich, 102°F waters like the Icelanders do! After our return to Reykjavik, our day concludes with a farewell dinner.
Day 7: Reykjavik/Harpa Concert Hall/U.S.
Meals: Breakfast
Spend the morning at leisure before checkout. Before noon, your smarTours guide will take you on a short stroll to Harpa Concert Hall for a tour. Built in 2011, this unique building truly dazzles with its façade of multifaceted glass. We’ll then depart to the airport for the return nonstop flight to the U.S. and the end of your incredible Iceland adventure.
The tour will end for passengers who did not purchase flights today, on Day 7, in Reykjavik

Spirit of Iceland with Northern Lights
Company Reviews
Reliable, good value
We had a wonderful tour guide Dave who…
Ireland was more beautiful than we imagined it would be.
In March 2023 we took a SmarTours…
Our guide was named Madani and he shared so much about the lives of his people and their rich history. We traveled in comfort and stayed in amazing hotels in six different cities. We went on daily adventures that I never knew were possible. This was not what I call a "vacation", but rather "educational traveling". Every day I learned...every day I experienced this exciting country and culture...and best of all...every day I smiled.
Our first adventure with SmarTours was to Peru. That adventure got us hooked on this company, because we realized how much of the world, we knew nothing of, but could learn about with SmarTours.
Live for today...because tomorrow is not promised
Just Say No!
On Feb 3, 2021 SmarTours sent me an email confirming my $300 credit for future travel. For three people that’s a total of $900. On May 15, 2023, Theresa Meyer, Co-President emailed me to use my credit and “to invite me to travel with us again.”
I responded to the invitation and offered a creative, Win Win solution, please use our $900 to book a day tour for us with one of their business partners. Theresa ultimately responded, “Unfortunately this is not something we can do. All of our partners are B2B and do not directly work with customers on individual day tours or excursions. It sounds like the best bet would be to transfer your credits to someone who is interested in going on one of our full trips. You may all transfer your credits to anyone you like. If they book their own airfare independently, we have several trips that come in under $2000 per person, inclusive of guide, entrance fees, hotels and transportation, covering anywhere from 7 to 13 days. Which is an incredible value. We do not offer any tours for only $300 or $900.”
Well I thought SmarTours was a business that used business partners which is B2B. In the time she took to craft that response she could have gone on Viator, GetYourGuide, or TripAdvisor to book a day tour for us.
I do not recommend using this tour company.
As this was our first organized/group tour I didn’t know what to expect
It was excellent
