Style Style Small Group Tour Small groups are usually defined as between 10 and 24 travelers, often less. If you're the kind of person who enjoys more intimate experiences and personal service this is a good choice. All else being equal you will pay a premium for this style vs a larger group tour.
Private Guided Private tours give you the undivided attention of a guide, and often involve special access to sites and unique experiences not available to larger groups. This is a great option for families, couples, and small friend groups. Expect to pay a bit more for the extra service.
Self Guided Tour A travel company plans your itinerary and arranges all the logistics including lodging, local activities, and transportantion. You have the flexibility of a solo trip while still getting the convience and time savings of expert planning. Get 90% of the benefits of a tour, without a guide.
Group Tour Groups are between 25-60 people, typically ~30-40. Usually there will be many opportunities to split off and enjoy meals and excursions in smaller groups. This is the most economical way to travel, saving up to 40% versus booking the same itinerary yourself.
River Cruise These vessels are smaller than most ocean cruisers, limiting which amenties are available. Passenger counts can vary. One of the biggest advantages of a river cruise is the ability to dock at smaller ports and local villages.
Small Ship Cruise Small ship cruises usually have a max passenger count of 500. The primary purpose of these trips is to spend time off the vessel in local ports (e.g. Mediterranean) or experiencing nature (e.g Galapagos or Antarctica). Cabins can vary from budget to luxury.
Large Ship Cruise This is the "floating city" experience, with multiple ways to enjoy your vacation aboard the ship as much as on land. Ships are multiple floors, provide several activities, culinary, and shopping options. They often make fewer stops and have less time available for shore excursions.
Retreats Similar to a self guided tour but staying in one location only with activities and day outings included as a part of the stay.

There is a long-standing tradition that prayers in the church have helped provide luck and success to fishermen working on the dangerous seas in the area. The small church is built right into the coast with amazing views of the turbulent ocean waves meeting volcanic rocks and black sands. Look for a quaint set of painted elf houses nestled in the church grounds.
  • Drive to Lake Kleifarvatn, set in fascinating, stark, moon-like surroundings. Near the lake’s southern end lies Krysuvik, where powerful jets of steam escape from deep below the earth’s crust and sulphurous steam rises from numerous geothermal vents. You can see numerous small hot springs, brightly-coloured mud pots, boiling pools and other types of geothermal activity. Continue under low mountains along the shoreline to stop by craggy cliffs rising sheer from the sea. This is home to Grindavik, a town with a sizeable fishing fleet. After a lunch stop in Grindavik (lunch is on your own), head for the world-renowned Blue Lagoon. Set in a black lava field, this geothermal spa is a lagoon filled with warm mineral-rich seawater that provides the ultimate interaction and relaxation with Iceland’s raw nature.

  • Highlights: Seljalandsfoss, Skogafoss, Myrdalsjokull, Reynisdrangar Cliffs, Vik, 4×4 Adventure, Back Roads, Beautiful Views, Lava Cave, Black Sand Coast, Waterfalls.Breakfast at your hotel. Meet your driver-guide, who will brief you on the day’s excursion. Today you will be an explorer as well as a traveller! It’s important to know that your guide may adjust the itinerary to snow and weather conditions, to make sure each day is an adventure that shows you the best of the area at the time you are visiting. All the activities planned are fun, but you are not required to take part. So don‘t worry if you don‘t feel up to it. The days will be really great with lots to see, so you‘ll still have a great time. Once you leave the city limits, it won’t take long to reach remote areas. You’ll start the day with an easy caving expedition for those who are interested, into an ancient lava tube. These are created by volcanic eruptions and give a rare glimpse of how a volcano looks from the inside. After emerging from underground, drive along the South Shore using back roads and trails, enjoying the views of rugged coast and isolated farms. Along the way you will stop to view some of the beautiful waterfalls that decorate the South Shore such as the mighty Skogafoss waterfall. If conditions are just right, you might also visit a hidden waterfall, a local gem accessible only to small groups. Then climb aboard the 4×4 vehicle again to explore a part of the region‘s famous black sand beaches. At the end of the day you will visit a secret natural wonder on the black sandy beach. Spend the evening at the Hrifunes guesthouse, located on a cozy farm just on the edge of the highland wilderness. Hrifunes is far away from any light pollution, so if the weather conditions are right, there is a chance you could see northern lights. The hosts of Hrifunes, Haukur and Hadda, will make sure you have a comfortable stay. They serve home-made family-style dinners. Your guide, Ingimundur, will also join you for the meal. Dinner is an especially fun part of the day, with lots of chatting and laughter about the day spent together. Our past visitors have really enjoyed this experience and the opportunity to enjoy good food and get to know the other people on the trip better. (BLD)
  • Day 3: Vatnajokull National Park
  • Highlights: Eldhraun Lava Field, Skaftafell National Park, Vatnajokull, Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon, Extensive Lava fields, Europe‘s largest glacier, Glacier Hike, Lagoon with Icebergs, Ice Cave Exploration. After a hearty Icelandic breakfast, start the day by driving along the mountain road that crosses Eldhraun, a huge lava field created an eruption in the 18th century. Some historians believe this was a cause of the French Revolution (you’ll hear more about that during the tour)! Pass the huge cliffs at Lomagnupur with their incredible basalt columns, and enjoy some of the hidden gems the area has to offer. Continue to the Skaftafell area of Vatnajokull National Park. The entire national park covers about 14% of Iceland, making it one of the largest parks in Europe. Here you’ll don crampons and, with ice pick in hand, hike on the wonderous Svinafellsjokull glacier. During the hike you‘ll see amazing shapes in the ice and learn how glaciers are formed. Afterwards, enjoy the famous Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon with its colorful icebergs and lazy seals, and the picturesque Diamond Beach close by. Plenty of photo opportunities here! If the period is right and weather and conditions on the ice are safe, you‘ll visit a natural ice cave on the South side of Vatnajokull glaciers. These ice caves appear and disappear according to the movements of the glacier. Some are very stable to visit, others are more difficult to reach and are more unstable. Some are quite unique while others look ordinary at first but become extraordinary in the right light and conditions. Expert glacier guides in the area will assess the conditions and see if there is any suitable ice cave to visit while you’re in the region. After an exciting day of ice, icebergs and volcanic lava, return to your hotel for dinner and overnight at Hrifunes, your home away from home. (BLD)
  • Day 4: Hekla Volcano, Gullfoss, Geysir, Thingvellir
  • Highlights: Eyjafjallajokull, Hekla, Gullfoss, Geysir, Thingvellir National Park, Reykjavik, Volcanic Views, Golden Waterfall, Erupting Hot Springs, Bathing in a Secret Lagoon.Enjoy another delicious Hrifunes breakfast. Then you‘re off again for another day‘s adventure in your trusty 4×4 SuperJeep. Make your way towards the Golden Circle, passing through regions with views of volcanic mountains such as the famous Eyjafjallajokull (2010 eruption) and Mt. Hekla, Iceland’s most frequently erupting volcano. On the agenda today is a swim in the Secret Lagoon, a peaceful hot-spring fed lake. Created by local residents using the natural landscape and materials in 1891, it is Iceland’s oldest geothermal swimming pool. The water has natural minerals that soothe your skin. Surrounding the pool are tiny bubbling mud pots and a little geyser that erupts regularly. Watching these as you soak in the Secret Lagoon is a special experience. End the day visiting the three natural pearls that create the famous Golden Circle: the big waterfall Gullfoss, the spouting hot spring area of Geysir and the beautiful Thingvellir National Park. Thingvellir is the ancient location of Iceland’s first parliament, as well as the meeting point of two tectonic plates that divide Europe from North America. Your guide will bid you adieu with a taste of Iceland’s famous schnapps, brennivin, and a bit of fermented shark meat to go with it. It‘s a true Viking test and tastier than it sounds! Return to Reykjavik where the evening is at your leisure. Overnight at hotel in Reykjavik at Radisson Blu Saga Hotel or Fosshotel Raudara (according to advised accommodation list). Dinner is on your own. (BL)

Pass alongside farmlands built in the shadow of towering volcanic mountains. You’ll see many signs of how the volcanoes of the area have powerfully altered the landscape. If the skies are clear, you may even catch views of two of Iceland’s most famous volcanoes: Hekla (last eruption 2000) and Eyjafjallajokull (last eruption 2010). In Hvollsvollur town, visit the LAVA Centre, an interactive, high-tech exhibition about volcanic activity, earthquakes and the creation of Iceland over millions of years. It’s a perfect introduction to how natural volcanic and earthquake forces created Iceland – and continue to shape the island.Next visit the impressive Seljalandsfoss waterfall, where the intrepid adventurer can take the trail that leads behind the waterfall.Travel along the farmlands of the south coast to Landeyjahofn harbor. Take a 30-minute ferry ride to the Westman Islands, enjoying the view of volcanic islands and seabirds. Your destination is Heimaey Island, the largest of the Westman Island archipelago. It is the only inhabited island. Life here is quite a bit different from the “mainland” Iceland, and you’ll discover some of the unique culture and history on a drive around the area.Visit windy Storhofdi Point with its fantastic views over the area.(During mid-May through the beginning of August you might also see puffins here.) Take a walk up to the crater of a volcano that erupted only three decades ago.You can still see the steam rising from the ground and the brilliantly red and black lava deposits that form bizarre shapes. The view from up here and over the sea and islands is simply stunning! Next, take a trip back in time and visit Eldheimar Museum. You’ll learn about the catastrophic 1973 eruption that covered many homes on Heimaey in lava and changed the residents’ lives forever. You’ll see where lava flowed over houses and where grass and moss now grown in among the lava. The volcanic flows also created an amazing time capsule; wandering through Eldheimar gives you a peek into Icelandic daily life in the early 1970s.The rest of the afternoon is open for you to explore the island on your own. Walk along the harbor and check out the 17th-century earth fort built to protect the islands from pirate raids. • Day 4: Vik– Skaftafell – Jokulsarlon
  • Skaftafell and Glacial beauty – Europe’s largest Glacier – Glacial Lagoon with IcebergsBreakfast at your hotel. Today you’ll be visiting the southern area of Vatnajokull National Park, named after Europe’s largest glacier. Vatnajokull National Park covers 14% of Iceland’s surface, making it the largest national park in Western Europe. Throughout the day you’ll also have views of massive Vatnajokull glacier. Start the day by crossing Eldhraun, the largest single flow of lava ever to flow on the face of the Earth. The cataclysmic eruption happened in 1783-1784 AD and affected the climate across mainland Europe. The vast lava moss-covered lava formations are surreal. Head across a landscape of black sand plains and braided rivers created when glacier capped volcanoes erupted. It’s hard to believe that this black sand desert was actually created by ice! Visit Skaftafell, a beautiful glacier-ringed valley in Vatnajokull National Park. The contrast of black volcanoes, silvery glaciers and small green forests is strikingly beautiful. Continue to the stunning Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon to see floating icebergs and maybe a curious seal or two. Spend a few moments here taking in this unforgettable site. Nearby is the Diamond Beach, a black sand area where broken bits of ice bergs come to rest before they eventually drift to sea. Now it’s time to enjoy the beauty of ice and water even more with a boat trip! Head to the Iceberg Lagoon, another (and quieter) glacier lagoon in the area. Take a Zodiac boat tour amid the floating ice bergs, viewing the different shapes and shades of blue. Enjoy the guide’s interesting insights about the glacier and the area’s history and nature. Gullfoss is created by a glacial river, Hvita, that thunders over two ledges into a deep canyon. Several footpaths lead around the falls, each giving you a different view. The next stop is Thingvellir National Park, where the Viking-age parliament met for centuries on the shores of Iceland’s largest lake. Thingvellir is where Iceland became a nation, and many important decisions and historical events happened here. I’ve had the pleasure of traveling with ACIS both as a trip leader and a chaperone. The experiences, opportunities, and accommodations provided by ACIS are unparalleled. I’ve traveled to half a dozen countries with them, and they have never ceased to impress. We even had our tour manager make a mid-trip schedule adjustment to visit a 13th century castle that wasn’t even a part of our itinerary. ACIS recognizes the significance of international travel and makes sure that everyone, from students to chaperones, has a life changing experience they will never forget.

Last year my daughter traveled with ACIS and, from a parent’s perspective, I could not have been happier with the process. She had a wonderful time-saw so many things as they made their way from England to France to Germany and made some tremendous friends along the way. What impressed me the most was how easy and comfortable ACIS made us through the whole process. We always knew what to expect, had all of our questions answered in a prompt manner, and never for a moment felt uncertain as we sent our daughter away to another continent. I was also impressed with how all of the hotels were in the city centers of their destinations. For example, her hotel in Paris was just a couple blocks from the Arc de Triompfe-that allowed them to see so much more.

Great hotels, restaurants and tour managers.
Hotels are centrally located, restaurants served local food and TM Jo was amazing.
Fantastic support throughout the trip, before departure and during travel.

Students really enjoyed the cultural connections of cheese tasting in Normandy and Cezanne workshop in Aix-en-Provence.

Liz Rees is great to work with, extremely helpful and very responsive! She thoroughly helped me create a fantastic custom itinerary!

ACIS is the best! I have traveled with them on multiple occasions and they take care of everything start to finish. Whether it’s meal planning for travelers with allergies, or hotel requests, they always go out of their way to make sure travelers’ needs are met. One of the many benefits of traveling with ACIS is that they put you up in high quality hotels right near the city center. As opposed to being on the outskirts of town in a potentially risky area, you are always placed in an urban center within walking distance of cultural destinations and places to eat. If you are thinking of traveling by yourself or with a group, ACIS is definitely the right choice. There is something for nearly everyone, and you know what you’re getting from the very beginning. You’ll never get surprised by an additional charge for something that should be included in the first place, it’s all laid out for you in the itinerary. I can’t wait to travel with them again soon!

I just returned two weeks ago from our absolutely amazing trip with ACIS to Greece and Rome. It was the "Greeks & Romans" tour. Tom, in Boston was great with all of the planning for the trip and answering questions during the planning and recruiting process. From the moment that we arrived in Athens, our Tour Manager, Anna, took great care of our group. She went above and beyond for us. She took the time to explain everything that we would be doing and always talked to me and my Assistant Group Leaders about any decisions that needed to be made.
I have taken several other trips with other tour companies, and ACIS has been the best experience I've had. I will never go back to another tour company. I brought 35 students, 5 parents, and 3 other chaperones. This was the largest group that I've ever brought and I can't believe how smoothly everything went.
I'm already starting to plan for my next trip, hopefully in April of 2025. Thank you, ACIS!

ACIS is great about taking care of all the details. As an educator and trip leader I appreciate this. I was able to enjoy our school trip to Ecuador, together with my students and chaperones.
The hotels and location were great. My students were able to naturally interact with the locals. The food was amazing. The people at each of the restaurants and hotels, as well as the guides went above and beyond. The quality of the meals, the hotels, and activities were awesome. I highly recommend ACIS travel to anyone thinking of student travel.
I also appreciated the flexibility of our tour guide and his connection with not only the students but the chaperones. We felt like we were with family.
I had peace of mind the entire trip, even with an emergency one of our chaperones had.
I will travel again with my students, with ACIS!!!!

Thank you for such an incredible and smooth experience!!!
