Highlights

Laos is one of the few destinations where, in some areas, visitors are yet to deviate from a few well-trodden sights. It’s Indochina’s final frontier, and our specialists have trekked through jungles, scouted out caves and journeyed up rivers to get to know it more intimately. They can help you plan your holiday to Laos to follow in their wake. Only now emerging after years of isolation, Laos is a country of steep, jungle-robed valleys inhabited by resilient communities who live at a refreshingly unhurried pace. The former royal stronghold, Luang Prabang, is a mosaic of golden wats and Indochinese villas, its streets often filled with silent processions of monks. In the diminutive capital, Vientiane, you’ll find faded French-colonial mansions and coffee shops. The rest of the country is predominately one blanket of green, carved with slow-flowing tributaries of the Mekong. As you explore, you’ll happen upon little-visited hill tribes, backwater towns and Cham temples that predate Cambodia’s Angkor Wat.

Highlights

Thailand is a renowned beach destination, but our specialists know there’s far more to it than its palm-fringed sands. Having journeyed the breadth of the country, they can advise you on the best places to visit, based on your preferences, to get the most out of your holiday to Thailand. Inland, you’ll find temples in the shape of Isaan’s Khmer complexes and the UNESCO-protected ancient capital of Siam at Sukhothai as well as, from more recent history, the Bridge on the River Kwai. National parks foster elephants and gibbons, and hills preserve rich tribal cultures. There are also the cities, which provide a route into exploring Thailand’s food, such as the street markets in Chiang Mai and cooking classes in Bangkok. Along the coast, you’ll find sleepy villages where you can watch local fishermen bringing in the day’s catch, while limestone islands rising from the sea make the focal points for rewarding cruises.

Laos Tour Selection Trips

  • Bus trips through the mountains can be long and uncomfortable. Landslides may also disrupt travel plans, so make sure your plans are flexible.
  • If you visit Vang Vieng to try the infamous “tubing”, you may be disappointed. Visitors can still float down the river in a rubber tube, but the riverside bars have all been shut down following a number of accidents involving tourists. Instead, the stopping points along the river are now spaces to play games and meet others (though rumor has it alcohol continues to be sold here).
  • When choosing a trek in the northern mountains, make sure to choose a route appropriate to your fitness level, as well as ensuring to bring appropriate shoes and clothing.
  • Malaria exists in parts of Laos, so anti-malarials, mosquito nets, and mosquito repellant are recommended.
  • Act respectfully and dress appropriately when visiting buddhist temples. Remove your shoes and use only your right hand to ring bells and make offerings.
  • English is common throughout Laos, particularly in tourist areas. Learning a few words in the Lao language, however, can be a nice way to interact with locals.
