An early morning arrival in Reykjavik, the world’s northernmost capital that is known for its creative soul and eye-popping design. With a population of around 120,000, Reykjavik is one of the cleanest, greenest, and safest cities in the world. You’ll be greeted at the airport and escorted to a local museum displaying the Viking Ship Icelander (Islendingur), where you will enjoy the exhibition and breakfast. During breakfast, you’ll also receive an orientation briefing and get introduced to your group. Following breakfast, you’ll head straight to the capital for your panoramic Reykjavik city tour and take in the city’s major attractions. Highlights include the old town, the Parliament, the Cathedral, the harbor, the national museum, the Laugadalur swimming pool, the Asmundur Sveinsson Sculpture museum, the Pearl, the Hofdi House, and the city’s main landmark, the Hallgrimskirkja. Then, transfer to your centrally located hotel to check in and enjoy the afternoon / early evening at leisure.
Day 3: Reykjavik/Optional Snæfellsnes Peninsula Excursion.
Meals: Breakfast
Wake up in Iceland’s capital city and enjoy a buffet breakfast at your centrally-located hotel. You can enjoy a day at leisure for independent sightseeing in or around Reykjavik, or perhaps you’ll join the optional Snaefellsnes Peninsula excursion. Day 4: Reykjavik/Eyjafjallajokull/Seljalandsfoss & Skogafoss Waterfalls/Black Sand Beaches/Vik.
Meals: Breakfast and Dinner
Accommodation: Hotel Dyrholaey (Superior Rooms)
After breakfast, begin your journey through the stunning landscapes of Iceland’s south coast. This is the land of Njal’s Saga, a region of breathtaking scenery and legendary stories. During your guided excursion, you’ll encounter the wonderful variety of the south: from the wide plains formed by glacial rivers to the towering (and infamous) strato-volcano Eyjafjallajokull to the dramatic sea cliffs of Dyrholaey to the spectacular waterfalls of Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss. Arrive at your countryside hotel in the beautiful village of Vik, where you’ll check in and then enjoy an included dinner at the hotel.
Day 5: Skaftafell National Park/Vatnajokull.
Meals: Breakfast and Dinner
Today, drive from Kirkjubaejarklauster over the Skeioararsandur plains to Skaftafell national park (Europe’s largest national park), featuring the dominant and beautiful Vatnajokull glacier (Europe’s largest glacier). You’ll pass through several outlet glaciers on your way to the famous Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, where huge icebergs float magically through the water. Return to your countryside hotel this evening with pictures and memories to last a lifetime, and enjoy an included dinner at the hotel.
Day 6: Westman Islands/Selfoss.
Meals: Breakfast and Dinner
Accommodation: Hotel Selfoss
The spectacular beauty of the Westman Islands has to be seen to be believed. This day tour is your chance to experience the stunning landscapes, dramatic volcanic history and rich bird life (including puffins) of this remote island paradise. After taking the ferry to this magnificent island, your experience will include a sightseeing tour of Heimaey (the only inhabited island), and the site of the great eruption of 1973 that almost destroyed it. The eruption left the town dramatically changed and formed the Eldfell crater. The island is also one of the best places in the world to see puffins and other bird life (from May until mid August). Later, return to the mainland and drive to Selfoss, the largest residential town in South Iceland with a population of 6,512. Check into your hotel and enjoy an included dinner this evening.
Day 7: Gulfoss/Geysir/Thingvellir National Park.
Meals: Breakfast and Dinner
Following breakfast this morning, depart Selfoss for a journey through some of Iceland’s most spectacular and noteworthy sights. Your first highlight of the day is Thingvellir National Park, where the ancient Viking parliament met for centuries on the shores of Iceland’s largest lake. Here, you can also witness the geological phenomenon of tectonic plates coming apart. Onwards to Laugarvatn Fontana, where you’ll experience a geothermal bakery firsthand and dig up (and then eat) bread that has been cooked underground by the warmth of the earth. Continue to the hot spring area to see the famous Geysir and Strokkur, a magical shot spring that spouts every few minutes. Get your cameras ready for an exciting show! Last but not least, visit Gulfoss (translated as “Golden Falls”), Iceland’s most famous and impressive waterfall featuring a spectacular double cascade. Later, return to your hotel in Selfoss for an included dinner this evening.
Day 8: Selfoss/Hverageroi/Blue Lagoon/Reykjavik.
Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel Fron
Depart Selfoss for the village of Hverageroi, often known as the “flower village,” one of the few sites in the world located directly on top of a geothermal area. You’ll continue to Strandarkirkja, a church believed to have a special power to provide good luck, and then along the coast towards the volcanic peninsula of Reykjanes, an area with several dormant volcanoes and lavafields. to one of the highlights of the Iceland experience – the world-famous Blue Lagoon. This amazing natural spa is based around the unique properties of the geothermal seawater in the lagoon. The geothermal water originates 2,000 meters below the surface, where freshwater and seawater combine at extreme temperatures. The water has a unique composition of three active ingredients — Silica, Algae and Minerals — and the blue color comes from the Silica and the way it reflects sunlight. You can enjoy a drink while you relax in the lagoon, position yourself under the waterfall, apply a Silica mud mask, or simply enjoy the healing powers of the Blue Lagoon. After your geothermal experience, you’ll return to Reykjavik, check into your hotel, and enjoy an evening at leisure.
Day 9: Reykavik/Farewell Dinner.
Meals: Breakfast and Dinner
Enjoy a day at leisure in Reykjavik. Perhaps you’ll explore the breathtaking Harpa Concert Hall, winner of the 2013 European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture, or visit the National Museum of Iceland. Alternatively, you may wish to participate in an optional panorama ATV/quad bike adventure, a true mountain safari between moss-covered lava and black sands. This evening, enjoy a farewell dinner with your group at a local Reykjavik restaurant.
Day 10: Reykavik/USA.
Meals: Breakfast
A morning at leisure before checking out of your hotel and heading to the airport for your return flight to the USA.
