Overview

Short Description

Tanzania is the Africa of your imagination, a place where you can climb the continent’s tallest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro, and see wildebeest thundering across the Serengeti during the Great Migration. The country offers a great variety of things to do, including descending over 600 metres (1,960 feet) into the Ngorongoro Crater in search of rhino and tracking chimpanzee in the Mahale Mountains.

Off the coast, the Mafia Islands have a rich local culture and offer palm-fringed stretches of powdery sand and azure waters perfect for activities such as kayaking and whale watching, or you could simply unwind under the sun.

Itinerary

Day 1 : International outbound flight

Today you begin your journey by boarding your international outbound flight to Kilimanjaro Airport.

Day 2 : Arusha

On arrival into Kilimanjaro Airport you will be met and transferred to the leafy suburbs of Arusha to relax after your flights. Enjoy beautiful views of Mount Meru and the surrounding green hillsides from your boutique lodge overlooking the town.

Day 3 : Tarangire National Park

After breakfast you will set off for Tarangire National Park, a lovely scenic drive, heading towards the Great Rift Valley Escarpment. You will have time for a picnic lunch in the park and a game drive before you head to your camp in the evening.

Day 4 : Tarangire National Park

On safari in Tarangire National Park - you will spend today exploring this very pretty park famous for its huge herds of elephant. Excursions on offer from Olivers Camp include night drives and walking safaris - both of which offer a very different perspective to the regular game drives and if time allows we would recommend you experience both. The landscapes in Tarangire vary between open plains, swamps, majestic baobab trees and riverine forest, with the dramatic Ol Doinyo Lengai volcanoes providing a stunning backdrop in the distance.

Day 5 : Ngorongoro Conservation Area

This morning you will set off with your driver-guide for Lake Manyara National Park, where you can enjoy game drives for the day. You will take a picnic lunch with you to enjoy at midday and can spend your time exploring this small but beautiful national park. The flamingos on the lake are a classic East African sight. You will leave the park in the afternoon and be driven up the Rift Valley escarpment and into the Ngorongoro Highlands where you will spend the next three nights overlooking the Ngorongoro Crater at the amazing Ngorongoro Crater Lodge.

Day 6 : Ngorongoro Conservation Area

You will have a day of game viewing in Ngorongoro Crater today. Reaching the floor of the crater, you'll have time to explore before stopping for a picnic lunch to enjoy at midday. There are currently some resident black rhinos that you may well be lucky enough to see along with large prides of lion, zebra, wildebeest, buffalo and hyena.

Day 7 : Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Today you will visit Olduvai Gorge - the cradle of humanity. Olduvai Gorge is famous for some of the most famous and influential pre-historic discoveries in the canyon walls. The gorge is about 90 metres deep and in its walls you will find many fossils. Archaeologists have been working here since Mary and Louis Leakey arrived in 1931. There is a museum and there are guides on hand to give you a tour around the area. This is a fascinating experience and highlights a very important area in Tanzania which is not visited by most safari goers.

Day 8 : Serengeti National Park

This morning you will be taken to the airstrip for your light aircraft to the Serengeti National Park. On arrival in the park you will be greeted by your guide from Namiri Plains camp. Namiri Plains is located where the southern short grass plains meet the acacia woodland. The Ngare Nanyuki underground river creates pockets of permanent water that support year-round concentrations of wildlife. With easy prey available throughout the year there is more than enough big cat activity here and the dramatic rocky outcrops that dot the plains serve as excellent observation points for cheetah, lion and leopard on the lookout for prey - the perfect place for those looking to see the cats of the Serengeti.

Day 9 : Serengeti National Park

You have a full day of excursions from Namiri Plains today enjoying morning and afternoon game drives from the camp. Away from the big cats, the birdlife in the Serengeti is also spectacular, with a variety of different bustards, colourful lilac-breasted rollers and superb starlings offering some lovely sightings.

Day 10 : Serengeti National Park

Today you will leave the Namiri Plains area and fly by light aircraft to the north of the Serengeti, an exclusive area with amazing game viewing opportunities. You will fly from Namiri Plains in the morning so you will arrive in plenty of time to settle into your room, enjoy some lunch and head out on your afternoon safari excursion.

Day 11 : Serengeti National Park

Today you can enjoy a full day on safari from Sayari Camp. You are usually woken up in the morning with tea and coffee before heading out in to the park to get the best possible game viewing. You will return to the camp for lunch and an afternoon siesta before heading out again in the afternoon for another game drive. The drives usually last around three hours but this does depend on what unfolds on your drive and what wildlife you see. You could even chat with your guide and organize a packed picnic lunch and head out for a full day to explore further afield - the perfect way to end your safari in Tanzania!

Day 12 : International return flight

This morning you will be taken to the airstrip for your light aircraft flight to Kilimanjaro Airport and your onward flights.

Day 13 : International return flight

Arrive home today to complete your journey.

If you want a trip of a lifetime then this is the company for you. We have used them twice once for Western Canada and more recently for a trip to Tanzania and Zanzibar. Both trips exceeded our expectations.

The Tanzania specialist Scott Davenport was extremely helpful and made the trip both memorable and hassle free. An outstanding service and I would highly recommend this company.

This was the first time we had considered having a company plan a holiday for us, I had always planned toad trips myself. However, on this occasion for a long awaited trip to the North East USA, to see the Fall colours, we decided to give Audley travel the opportunity. From the start Audley (in the form of Monty Bampfield) were engaged and helpful in planning our 12 day trip round New England. In depth telephone calls ascertained what we were looking to gain from the trip and what it was we wanted to see. A draft itinerary was produced which we were able to tinker with to align with what we wanted. A comprehensive travel pack was sent to us which gave all the detail and advice we could wish for. The holiday was flawless from Audrey's angle with minor niggles in country being outwith their gift to influence. Not cheap but I guess you get what you pay for. Professional, engaged and highly recommended.

Audley clearly has the resources and contacts to help weave your trip together. In my instance, I needed to make some minor changes to my trip which included one excursion cancellation. Instead of receiving help I received an email admonishing me to stay with my itinerary or else there would be cancellation fees. I was literally badgered by the specialist. I have never been spoken to in this manner and am (obviously) still smarting from this treatment. I don't know how this may help others except to say "caveat emptor".

What a fantastic holiday in Australia and Fiji we've just returned from, organised from start to finish by our Audley representative Jindy Sangha.
The trip exceeded our expectations in so many ways. Starting with time in the Darwin Area then on to Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef the 'top end' of Australia was fascinating. Then came Ularu in the heart of Australia such a spiritual and atmospheric environment. The bustling city of Sydney exceeded all expectations. Circular Quay was fascinating and so photogenic with both Harbour Bridge and Opera House. The Botanical gardens are beautiful and trips to Bondi and Manley beaches were not to be missed. Miss Saigon at the Opera House on our last night in Australia provided the pinnacle to our Australian experience. Tokariki island resort, Fiji is the most beautiful environment we have ever been in and the Fijian staff were friendly, courteous and faultless in everything they did. Fiji was a wonderful end to a perfect Golden Wedding celebration.

From start to finish Audley provided my husband and I with the most brilliantly arranged and organised holiday to Japan, exactly tailored to our desires and needs. Malcolm Wellby, our Japan specialist, did a perfect job of interpreting and executing what we wanted from our time in Japan which even now we find hard to believe, as our trip was 17 days long and incorporated many hotels, many train journeys and many guided tours. Every step of the way the ‘self guide’ app. (so easy to use!) that Malcolm asked us to download kept us informed with all the details we needed, even directions to each next destination or meeting point. So useful. The holiday was faultless. What an achievement.

The entire trip to Africa was incredible and went so smoothly. This was largely due to Agent David Katwiwa and Audley’s deep knowledge and resources.
Hotels and Safari Camps and their staffs were superb. And we are “worrywarts” so David’s thoroughness and patience were terrific!
