Cancelled tour, deception and poor customer service
Booked a 'trip of a lifetime' with Intrepid to NZ, having worked throughout Covid in a public facing role.
The booking was made a year in advance - during which we received information about the trip and Intrepid took our money.
Three weeks before the trip we were informed our trip had been cancelled. The explanation given by Intrepid was the NZ local operator (Haka tours) had failed to include us on their attendance list and the tour was now full. The blame was squarely placed with Haka tours.
We managed, with the assistance of our excellent travel agent, to book a self drive holiday. However the whole experience was extremely stressful.
When we arrived in NZ it soon became known to us that Intrepid actually own Haka tours - so the reason given for cancellation was a deliberate attempt to deceive us. Intrepid have done nothing of any use to assist us and I would strongly advise that you do NOT book with them. They are not to be trusted and clearly do not value their customers.
Intrepid just gets it right every time!
Brilliant local tour leader with lots of knowledge and recommendations, local guides who share their great knowledge and insights when visiting a village/palace/temple/fort/etc, small group tours of often like-minded people so you connect very easily with your fellow travellers, authentic and fun experiences (for example street foodie tour by auto rickshaws or tuk-tuks), all the logistics of travelling is taking care of making it so much easier and efficient compared to when you would had to arrange it yourself.

Trip is a let down before it even happens.
I haven’t even gone on my trip yet and I will never use Trafalgar for another trip. I booked the Highlights of Eastern Europe trip for September 2022 in early 2022. After I booked the trip I got a new job and moved to a new city. Being a new employee I would not have enough leave to go on the trip. I notified Trafalgar in writing more than 90 days before the trip and requested to reschedule for September 2023. I received an email back canceling my reservation, which was paid in full, and instructing me to call when I was ready to reschedule. When I called to reschedule I was first told I couldn’t reschedule because the trip was less than 90 days. We went back and forth because I had given them notice in writing prior to the 90 days. Finally they allowed me to reschedule but raised the price. When I questioned it I was told there weren’t any deals at that time but if a deal became available to call back and they would give me that price. I originally paid $4095 for a single room and was now being charged $4795. So I checked online today and saw to book this trip today for a single room it would be $4195. I called Trafalgar to get my bill adjusted. They refused saying they don’t do that, even though I was told last summer to call back if the price went down. So I am stuck overpaying for this trip and I’m already disappointed with their customer service. I will never use this company to travel with again. Horrible customer service and they don’t stand by what they say. You can never get through when you call them. 2 hour wait times. I am now wondering what their customer service will be like during the trip. This is an expensive trip and I feel really let down and taken advantage of by this company. Corporate greed at its finest.

The local knowledge he and his local counterparts provided added layers of context and history to every beautiful site was saw. He advocated extensively for those with allergies to get real food and not miss out on delicacies, which is a level of compassion I rarely see in the service industry. He made everything memorable and the trip would not have had the level of magic that we will forever remember without him.

I have taken several trips with them in…
I have taken several trips with them in the past but they are awful now. Have tried several times to use a credit from a cancellation during Covid but their customer service managers put you on never-ending hold and then either book the wrong flights or come back to tell you that they can’t do it. Originally told I could book by December 31, 2023 in order to use credit and now told I have to finish vacation by then. They are highly unreliable and terrible to use now.
Minimal issues and great prices!
I've taken one group tour and five independent trips thru Gate 1. Never had a problem. But i've heard part of my luck has to do with getting the name of the agent and,get their extension - so you're always dealing with the same person.And fyi - can't beat their prices!

Could not have been better
We went to Antigua last year for our 25th Anniversary and stayed at Galley Bay. We liked it a lot and went back this year. As we only left the resort to go on a helicopter tour, this year we decided to add a few days in English Harbour at a hotel that another couple had recommended to us to give us the opportunity to try some different restaurants.
The same couple recommended their travel agent – Audley travel - so that is where we went. I was suspicious as to whether they would add any value as I can book my own flights and negotiate deals with hotels but we were extremely pleased with the service from Isabelle – their Caribbean specialist. More on this later.
We worked with her to optimise the price for the flights. Although I have over 500k miles still with BA, reward flights were out of the question but we managed to get Virgin Upper for £5,500 (compared to BA quote of around £10k for Club which is just not quite as good)
Audley managed all of the booking process at our selected hotels so we had a single contact point. The arrangements were faultless and we were kept informed at all times. The itinerary was well presented and we had both an electronic version and a high-quality folder with all the paperwork and recommendations for trips and restaurants as well as quality luggage tags. It all makes you feel good.
On landing in Antigua we were met at the bottom of the jetway by a representative of Audley (St James travel) who took us straight to the front of the queue at immigration (we never knew such service existed). Having passed through that, our bags were just coming round the carousel so the rep took them off, led us into the outside world where we had to wait about 5 minutes for our private transfer (only because we were early!). We were in the car less than 20 minutes from touching down. Last time I achieved that was on a hand baggage only trip with Ryanair to Salzburg. All thanks to Audley.
The inter hotel transfer and return transfer to the airport were faultless as was the post holiday catch up call.
Were already working with Audley on next years break using Isabelles extensive knowledge of the hotels and options
Didn't Even Get as Far as a Quote
I made an enquiry re Audley Travel's Orangutans & Wild Borneo tour but unfortunately didn't get even get as far as a quote. Due to my employment I'm not permitted access to a mobile phone during working hours - and my hours are frankly ridiculous. Therefore, when the 'specialist' came back to me via email/voicemail asking to book a phone consultation I politely explained this isn't practical for me and that I simply needed a quote for me to make a decision. I then had another email advising she couldn't possibly quote (despite me giving the exact holiday and departure date) as 'all Audley holidays are truly tailor made, etc, etc, etc'. Clearly as an extraordinarily well travelled person, I'm unable to discern if a tour as detailed on Audley Travel's own website and following extensive research and comparison with other itineraries is right for me, without having to talk about it further first! Whilst I fully appreciate all companies will have processes they like to follow, Charlotte's complete rigidity and inability to understand my specific circumstances are hardly the actions expected of a top ranked travel agency. Had I been provided with a quote, I would almost certainly have made the booking by now as it was on my shortlist of just three holiday options. Instead I have now booked with a competitor that was willing to just quote initially - that's a c. £8k lost booking for Audley Travel due to inflexibility and an inability to respond to specific customer need: so much for everything being tailor made.

Don't wait to visit Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan. Now is the time. This
very interesting and thorough tour covering a large geographical area gives
an in-depth experience into each of these three former Soviet republics. In
Armenia, one travels from Yerevan in the centre, then south, back to Lake
Sevan and on to the north to the cross the border. In Georgia, from Tbilisi,
one radiates out from the capital to the North, West, East and South. In
Azerbaijan, which is only for two days only Baku and a small area around can
be covered. The only downside was a lot of coach travel albeit extremely
comfortable as we had a 51 seater for 14 of us! I loved Armenia the best
with Yerevan and its lovely Republic square, the brown dry barren scenic
hills to the south, the vast expanse of Lake Sevan and the complete change of
scenery to the north where it was green trees and UK type countryside.
For me this trip, semi-completed a journey started three years ago. As in
2016, I visited the Baltic countries, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Then in
2017, three of the five Stans - Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. And
finally this trip. It is so interesting being able to look back and reflect
on the difference between these countries, each one of which appears to be at
a different developmental stage. What I notice the most having visited all
nine, is the effect of their geographical location, the West to East/Europe
to Asia influence on their individual progress, along with their proximity to
their friendly or not-so-friendly neighbours. I would definitely recommend
visiting these three and some of the other former Soviet republics as the
more you see the more one starts to understand their history.
In Armenia, the food and wine was amazing and tasted as food should. Each
day we stopped for lunch at a small out of the way restaurant in a
picturesque location and were experted dined to wonderful fresh salads, BBQ
trout or meat along with freshly cooked lavash (flatbread).
In Georgia, taking the cable car in Tbilisi just before sunset up to the fort
and then having a beer in a small café overlooking the city all lit up.
All three group leaders were amazing. In Armenia, we had Rafik whose command
of English was outstanding. As was his ability to impart in-depth knowledge
about his beloved country. In Georgia, we had Nino who was equally good at
imparting knowledge about her country and its numerous churches along with
their saints. Then in Azerbaijan, Rizwan. We only had him for a short time,
two days but he also excelled in his knowledge delivery.
For ladies, do take dresses and skirts. In Armenia and Georgia in late
September/early October, it was warm, in the late 20C or early 30C with
beautiful warm sunny days. I realise that most Exodus travellers wear
trousers, but if you like wearing summer frocks, this would be your
opportunity. You may be concerned about the churches but as long as your
dress/skirt is at least below the knee you will be fine. For quite a few
churches in Georgia, ladies without skirts had to don one from a basket at
the church door! In fact this statement goes for all nine of the former
Soviet republics, where you can wear exactly the same clothes as the UK. I
made a big mistake when travelling to the Stans, as I thought ladies would
have to cover up, long sleeves, long dresses but it’s not true. Also do
think about taking sandals both for ladies and men. Some of the men on the
trip were very envious that I had my walking sandals as they mentioned they
wished they had brought theirs.
If you want some presents, look out for the lovely pale blue moonstone
jewellery. You can find these both in Armenia and Georgia. They make lovely
presents. Also when visiting Signagi in Georgia, do venture up the main
street and over the top, through an arch towards the city walls where there
are a couple of shops selling cotton rugs (very similar to kilims) in
beautiful colours and designs and ever so cheap. I bought two, one 4’ x 2
1/2’ for £5 and the other 3’ x 2’ for £3. I wish I’d bought more as
they make great bedside rugs.
Do seriously consider the Azerbaijan extension, which although being very
expensive for what turned out to be only two full days touring, was certainly
extremely worthwhile as it did complete the story between the three
countries.
Go now before things change too much. Georgia is on the waiting list to join
the EU; Armenia elected a new prime minister in May 2018 who they hope will
provide them with a brighter future; Azerbaijan has a massive building
programme to increase tourism. They have been advised that oil will run out
by the end of the century, and they need to provide the country with an
alternative source of income.

I was pleasantly surprised by Armenia and Georgia. Bot countries far
exceeded my expectations for them. People are friendly. Prices are cheap by
western European and American standards. The scenery is beautiful. Our
hotels were nice.
I'm not a religious person, but I actually very much enjoyed visiting the
numerous churches and monasteries.
The leaders in both countries were excellent. It was Nona in Armenia and
Sophia in Georgia. Both ladies were intelligent and friendly, and everything
flowed smoothly which made the trip a nice experience.
Be prepared for some long days in the bus and be prepared to see many
churches and monasteries along the way. The scenery is nice, and I never
grew tired of looking at it.
I'd skip the Azerbaijan extension at the end of the trip as it's VERY
overpriced for such a short amount of time. The destination itself is fine,

I was pleasantly surprised by Armenia and Georgia. Bot countries far
exceeded my expectations for them. People are friendly. Prices are cheap by
western European and American standards. The scenery is beautiful. Our
hotels were nice.
I'm not a religious person, but I actually very much enjoyed visiting the
numerous churches and monasteries.
The leaders in both countries were excellent. It was Nona in Armenia and
Sophia in Georgia. Both ladies were intelligent and friendly, and everything
flowed smoothly which made the trip a nice experience.
Be prepared for some long days in the bus and be prepared to see many
churches and monasteries along the way. The scenery is nice, and I never
grew tired of looking at it.

‘picturesque’ landscape of rolling green hills and mountain top, and a
view of Mount Ararat or Mount Kazbek, ahhh… Well organized itinerary.
I thoroughly enjoyed the trip with a company of like minded, well traveled
and mature people from various countries.
Karahunj (Zorats Karer) - the Armenian Stonehenge (Yey)!!! and walk up to
Gergeti Trinity Church in Georgia, definitely.
Well organized and knowledgeable in many respects. They love their
respective countries and enthusiastic to introduce us their land with pride.
They both looked after us so professionally, even though they both very
young.
Armenian guide (Rafik) is a young man of intelligence and made us smile with
witty sense of humor. Thanks for taking us to Karahunj (was in my bucket
list last few decades, accomplished!), afternoon tea at Molokan Village,
Lavash bread making demo.
Georgian guide (Nino) is always cordial with beautiful smile. Thanks for
‘Daily Reminder’ each night so that we can prepare for what to expect the
following day. You somehow managed not to lose any of us during the walk
to/from Gergeti Trinity Church!
Bring your own scarf for ladies and long pants for gents esp. in Georgia. If
you forget, you may be able to borrow at the entrance of churches free of
charge. Bring comfortable walking shoes. Always ask if you can take photo
before you enter the religious monuments.
If you like history and cultural experience, briefly research where you are
going to visit beforehand so that you can enjoy and appreciate it more. Both
countries were cross-road of many different cultures, religions and empires
along the silk roads over the centuries, made them uniquely distinct place
with beautiful scenery.
During the border crossing (from Armenia to Georgia), the coach bus carried
our luggage up to the border of Georgia so that we did not have to drag our
luggage and walk. The Armenian Guide accompanied us up to the entrance of
Georgia to make sure we all crossed boarder safely, which was indeed very
nice.
Thanks to our drivers, Artak in Armenia and Nika in Georgia for driving
safely to take us to our destinations each day; especially through narrow and
sometimes winding road very skillfully.
People make country and leave lasting impression, after all. My gratitude
also goes to local tour companies – Sabera Tours in Armenia and Caucasus
Travel in Georgia for sound operation of tours.
Hope Karahunj (Armenian Stone Henge) makes it into itinerary – this place
is too precious to skip.
I already miss Lavash with cheese and herbs, ‘Churchkhela’(Dried Candy)
and ‘khachapuri’(Cheese Pie)!!

It was a very good trip and liked it a lot. Georgia was very special
experience for me and Armenia was good as well but both in their own way. In
Georgia you feel yourself in Europe Armenia is still like soviet union but
still very beautiful. People in both countries are amazing, very friendly and
