The romantic sounding Forbidden City is the name of the imperial palace which was active from the Ming to the Qing dynasties, roughly 500 years. This enormous complex consists of 980 buildings, covering an area of over 180 acres. Today you can visit the Palace Museum with its extensive collection of art and artifacts and walk among the outer buildings, declared an UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987. It's a classic stop on most China tours.
