Itinerary
Welcome to this beachside playground. Join your group for a welcome meeting and perhaps then explore the famed nightlife or laze in a cafe with a cocktail.
Visit the Maya pyramids at Chichen Itza. A fascinating fusion of religion, architecture and science, these ancient ruins are one of the most impressive of all the Maya sites. After learning about the site's history on a guided tour, travel on to the Yucatan capital of Merida for a beguiling dose of old-world charm.
Travel by comfortable bus to the southern state of Chiapas. Discover the imposing pyramid of Palenque, another impressive feat of Maya engineering. Nestled in a region of verdant, tropical rainforest, this is ancient civilisation at its most picturesque. Don't forget to pack some bathers for the chance to cool off in the Misol-Ha and Agua Azul waterfalls.
Continue southward to San Cristobal de las Casas and venture out to the local indigenous villages. Witness the traditional customs which are still very much a part of everyday life.
Cross into neighbouring Guatemala. Arrive in Panajachel for a spot of rest and relaxation by the picturesque Lake Atitlan. A veritable hub of adventure, choose between kayaking, mountain biking, zip-lining and paragliding to explore this pristine natural wilderness.
Get an insight into local life on an overnight family homestay in San Jorge La Laguna. A basic command of Spanish will get you far, though hand gestures and sign language can be a highly amusing way to break the ice!
Arriving in Antigua, there's time to take in the city sights, book in for a salsa class or relax in one of the many cafe with a cup of locally grown coffee.
Leave Antigua behind and head north into the heart of the country for a little known gem. Semuc Champey is a 300-metre limestone bridge topped with terraced pools and is arguably the most beautiful spot in the whole of Guatemala.
Explore the narrow lanes, pastel-coloured buildings and rustic shops of Flores, a tiny island town near Tikal.
Wake early and take a sunrise tour of the Tikal ruins. Soaring high above the jungle canopy, these enormous limestone temples are some of the most impressive remnants of the Mayan empire. Later, cross the border into easygoing Belize - a country so relaxed at times it...
Arrive at the little island of Caye Caulker to a decidedly relaxed Caribbean vibe. Laze in the sun, swim in the warm waters or take an optional jaunt to the Hol Chan Marine Reserve for the opportunity to dive with sharks. Treat yourself and feast on some legendary Belizean seafood at one of the island's many beach-side restaurants.
Cross the border into Mexico and travel up the coast to the tranquil beach haven of Tulum. Laze on the powdery shoreline, or get adventurous and explore the famous cliff-top ruins overlooking the beach.
The vibrant beach town of Playa del Carmen is the perfect place for some more fun in the sun. Dive into crystal blue waters and snorkel among the pristine coral and colourful marine life, stroll along the sand or enjoy a final fiesta to bid farewell to Central America. After all, what trip to Mexico is complete without a few margaritas?

The Intrepid Travel Experience
If you’re looking for adventure, you’ve come to the right place. For the past 25 years, we’ve been taking small groups of travelers on unforgettable trips around the world. What makes them unforgettable? Take a look for yourself and discover the Intrepid experience.
Our travelers have three styles of tour to choose from: Basix, Original and Comfort. Each has a different level of inclusions and accommodation, but all have unforgettable real life experiences as part of the package. Travellers can also choose themed trips, such as Family, Sailing or Food, to suit their interests.
Our group size has an average of just ten travellers, which allows us to get off the beaten track, use local accommodation and transport, and really get to know the culture. It also ensures we are contributing to the local economy; by choosing local suppliers we were able to keep AUD 60 million in local economies in 2012. We’re also working hard to reduce our carbon footprint and were the first in our sector to introduce carbon offset trips. This, along with our many corporate sustainability activities, has meant we’re one of the travel industry’s leaders in responsible travel.
Why Intrepid?
- Small groups - average of 10 people per trip
- Sustainability - pioneers for the industry
- Local leaders - authentic perspectives
- Local transport - get close and personal
- Local accommodation - experience real living
- Intrepid travelers - like-minded companions
History
Intrepid Travel has come a long way since its beginnings in 1989. From two university friends, a typewriter and a kitchen desk, it is now a proud member of The Intrepid Group, taking over 100,000 travelers every year.
Intrepid Travel is part of The Intrepid Group of companies, alongside leading small group adventure companies Peregrine, Urban Adventures and PEAK DMC.
Despite growing into a global business with over 1,000 staff based all over the world and over 800 different trips across every continent, we’ve remained devoted to the same grassroots values and responsible travel philosophies that we had at the very beginning.
Values
On every trip we operate and in every interaction we have with a client, supplier or local, we live our core values everyday:
- Integrity – Doing the right thing
- Responsible – Think global, act local
- Growth – Stakeholders in our own success
- Innovation – Thriving on new ideas and embracing change
- Fun – It’s engrained into who we are and what we do
- Passion – We are inspired by the work we do and the trips we offer

Meals introduction
While travelling with us you'll experience the vast array of wonderful food available in the world. Your group leader will be able to suggest restaurants to try during your trip. On our camping trips we often cook the region's specialities so you don't miss out. To give you the maximum flexibility in deciding where, what and with whom to eat, generally not all meals are included in the trip price. This also gives you more budgeting flexibility. As a rule our groups tend to eat together to enable you to taste a larger variety of dishes and enjoy each other's company. There's no obligation to do this though.

Style descriptions
Our Original style trips have a great balance of included activities with your group and free time to explore independently. Where we stay ensures we keep our travellers firmly entrenched in a region’s people and culture, and provides them with unique local experiences that benefits the community too. In most locations we stay in simple tourist-class hotels (i.e. 2-3 stars), plus on many trips you'll also get to experience a night with a local family on a homestay or something a little different like a Bedouin camp in the Sahara. Original style trips come with all manner of transport modes and use a mixture of local and private transport. You might find yourself sailing in a dhow in Zanzibar, jumping on a rickshaw in Sri Lanka or sailing on a yacht through the Galapagos. No matter the mode, it's all about minimising our environmental impact and making getting around part of the adventure.
