Skiing in Zermatt - top planning tips    

Skiing in Zermatt is one of the most adventurous and delightful experiences that every skiing lover dream of. Walking around the town on foot is a delightful experience but not the most practical option. Instead, choose the electric taxis or the frequent, cheaper, and punctual electric bus service.

If you have the lift pass, you can travel in these buses free of cost. If you are not a skiing fan and don't have a ski pass, you can always get a weekly bus pass during your stay. The Green buses follow the route through the river, linking to the Matterhorn Express gondola, Gornergrat rail station, and Sunnegga funicular. While the red slopes take you through a large circuit providing you with the opportunity to take in and breathe the beauty of the village.

Zermatt Switzerland has about 200 km of skiing slopes that have various regions for different difficulty levels. Beginners should go for Wolli park at Sunnegga, Beginner park at Schwarzsees, or Beginner park at Riffelberg. Sunnegga and Gornergrat has the most suitable slopes for intermediate skiers.

If you are an advanced level skier than you can go anywhere around the mountain. The red slopes at Rothorn and Sunnegga are a must try.

If you do not have advanced level expertise it is better to take a lesson or two for skiing in Zermatt that will make a huge difference in your skiing experience. Choose Sunnegga as your starting point. The nice and comfy blue slopes through Blauherd to Findeln will give you a smooth start and boost your confidence.

The Rothorn cable car takes you to a couple of long and straight red runs with few steeper and trickier sections.   • It is better to get your lift tickets from your hotel as you arrive and you will get a discount, and also get a refund if you return the pass at the end of your trip.
  • Don't rent a car as you cannot take it in the car-free region of Zermatt.
  • Go for advance booking in all aspects as the popular Zermatt region is always tourist-packed. Make advance booking for your flights and get the pre-booked shuttle from the airport to reach your destination.
  • Don't forget to bring your helmet and ski boats in your carry-on luggage if you are up for some winter fun. Do your homework before arriving to know skiing charges around the region.
  • Rent the skis on the first day of your trip and avail them till the last day to fly on the slopes in the breeze.
  • Various schools with English speaking ski instructors are present to give lessons to small groups.
  • Prepare a small lightweight backpack when going skiing on the slopes. You should be self-sufficient and completely prepared for the adventure out there. Keep some first aid, snacks, lunch, water and other essential things like that.
  • Euros won't work here so you will be needing Swiss Francs, especially for small purchases and taxis who do not accept the credit card.

Getting to Zermatt

You can reach Zermatt through one of the three ways; by a helicopter, by train, or by taxi. As Zermatt is a car-free region so every private car has to be parked 7 km before your destination, at Tasch, where you can find plenty of parking space. You can cog railway from here to take you to your destination.

Sion is the nearest airport to Zermatt but due to being smaller in size it cannot accommodate many airlines. Most of the people opt for Geneva, Milan or Zurich airport. All these international airports have rail connections via Visp or Brig to reach Tasch. You have to change trains at Tasch and get the cog railway to reach Zermatt. If you want you can also switch to the cog railway at Visp or Brig. Enjoy the beautiful train journey while enjoying the stunning landscape.

Local taxis are also available to reach the town from airports but they will also drop you at Tasch. They will quote a price for the journey that is usually quite expensive compared to the railway or the transport provided by the ski resort.

The mountain bog railway train runs frequently between Zermatt and Tasch, leaving every 15 minutes throughout the day, starting early morning till late at night. Electric taxis and horse-drawn carriages are also an option that you can order from your hotel by calling through the free phone booth at the station.

Zermatt in the Spring

Spring, March through May, in Zermatt Switzerland accompanies low temperatures combined with humidity, making this time moderately cold. Though winter has left by this time you can still feel its aftereffects. Being the second busiest time for tourism in Zermatt spring offers various activities for the travelers.
