Iguassu Falls must be seen to be believed. The sight of the massive falls, the thunderous sounds of rushing water, and the intense clouds of spray simply cannot be captured in pictures. Iguassu, which legend has it, caused First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt to exclaim "Poor Niagara" when she visited, is enormous, spanning two countries, Argentina and Brazil. It's a sight to behold and Stride has the trips to help you get there.
Brazilian Side
While the Argentina side allows visitors to get right up under the falls, the Brazilian side offers a stunning panorama. A single continuous walkway leads along the side of the river, taking in the view of the waterfalls. Most visitors start their trip to Iguassu falls on this side, before taking in the close up views from the Argentina side the following day.
Foz do Iguaçu is the main city on the Brazilian side. There is an airport not far from the city, and there are a wide range of options for places to stay and eat. Regular buses run from Foz do Iguaçu to the falls, and to the town of Puerto Iguazu on the Argentina side.
U.S. passport holders must obtain a visa to travel to the Brazilian side of the falls. The entrance fee to the Brazilian side does not include entry to the Argentina side, and vice versa, so visitors who want to visit both sides must pay for entry twice.
Argentina Side
Allow a full day to explore the Argentine side of the falls, as there are various walkways taking in incredible up-close views of the falls. The Upper Trail (Paseo Superior), climbs above the falls, while the Lower Trail (Paseo Inferior) winds along underneath them. A favorite experience for many visitors is walking into the Devil’s Throat (Gargantuan del Diablo), where the falls converge, sending up massive sprays of water.
Those who want to get even closer can take a boat ride underneath the falls. The water is freezing, but refreshing in the heat! Life jackets and protective bags for belongings are given to each passenger.
The main town on the Argentine side of the falls is Puerto Iguazu. It’s smaller and quieter than Foz do Iguaçu, but still offers a range of accommodation and restaurants. Regular buses run from the terminal in town to the falls, and to Foz.
Around the Falls
Though the falls are obviously the main attraction in the area, there are a range of other things to see and do here. Visitors can arrange hikes in the National Park, where they can explore nature and spot a range of wildlife, including marmosets, hummingbirds, toucans, snakes, alligators, and a variety of colorful butterflies. Hikes can be arranged in either Foz do Iguaçu or Puerto Iguazu.
Just outside Puerto Iguazu lies the wonderful wildlife refuge of Guiraoga, which houses a range of rescued animals, many of which are then reintroduced to the wild. These animals include monkeys, capybaras, turtles, and caimans, as well as a range of birds such as toucans, macaws, and hummingbirds. Tours are available in Spanish and English, and are included in the entrance fee. The refuge is located about 15 minutes outside of the town by road, and can be reached by bus.
Visitors can continue their journey into Paraguay, or even just pop in for the day. A bridge connects Foz do Iguaçu to the city of Ciudad del Este, in Paraguay. Buses run directly to the bridge from Puerto Iguazu. Hito de Las Tres Fronteras, just outside Puerto Iguazu, is a nice viewpoint where visitors can stand in Argentina while looking at both Brazil and Paraguay.
