Itinerary

Travel Map

Day 1 Moshi

Every year 25,000 people attempt to climb the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro. Before joining them in this endeavour, get used to the Tanzanian altitude in beautiful Moshi. Perhaps savour a meal of African pilou and chapatti - the perfect way to say "jambo" to Tanzania.

Day 2 Mti Mkubwa Camp

Take a scenic drive from Marangu to Lemosho Glades. From the trailhead, stroll through beautiful forests uphill towards the camp, situated at 2,800 m.

Day 3 Shira 1 Camp

Embark on a short hike through the forest before emerging into the moorlands. Beautiful and rugged, this rolling path will lead to a camp by the stream. This is the Shira One campsite, situated at 3,500 m.

Day 4 Shira 2 Camp

Journey uphill to reach the Shira Two hut at 3,800 m. If you’re up for a little more hiking in the afternoon, climb to Shira Cathedral or Shira Needle, otherwise rest your legs and enjoy a cup of tea with a scenic view. If venturing to the centre of an extinct volcano sounds alluring, there are options to hike to Cope Place too.

Day 5 Barranco Camp

Tackle the steep ascent directly towards Mount Kibo, where the highest point of the day will be around the 4,600 m mark. Despite the challenging uphill terrain, the beautiful surrounding forests and spectacular scenic ridge along the way are awe-inspiring. After an exhausting walking day, spend the night at a Barranco camp on the valley floor.

Day 6 Karanga Valley

Make the short yet sharp climb up the famed Barranco Wall, which leads to an undulating trail on the south-eastern flank of Kibo. This area provides superb vistas of the southern ice fields, so have a camera handy. Spend the night in a campsite directly overlooking the glaciers and take in the spectacular views.

Day 7 Barafu camp

Climb out of the Varranco Valley on your way past the Barranco wall. Another day of legging it uphill will be richly rewarded with more glacial views and scenic mountain vistas.

Day 8 Uhuru Peak

Wake early and enjoy a warm cup of tea before embarking on the most challenging and, in turn, rewarding portion of the trek. Hike to Stella Point, 5,750 m, then continue on to Uhuru Peak. This is the highest summit on Kibo’s crater rim and offers incredible views as t...

Day 9-10 Moshi

Complete this incredible journey with a stroll to the Mweka Gate before indulging in a hot shower and a soft bed at the hotel in Moshi.

It’s been more than 36 years since our first small group set out to discover Nepal. It’s this heritage and our reputation that keeps travellers coming back time and time again.

We appeal to the well-travelled, discerning traveller. The one who chooses value over price, and wants to immerse themselves in a place instead of just ticking landmarks off a bucket list. The type of person who would rather stay in a family run B&B built in a 16th century Venetian convent than a forgettable hotel. We’re for travellers who want inclusions along the way instead of fiddling around for loose change.

Almost 20 years ago, Peregrine led an industry revolution by solely employing locally born leaders. This innovative approach gives our travellers a deeper insight into the countries they visit. Doorways are opened and a true understanding of the place is fostered.

At Peregrine, we travel in intimate groups and take the time to get under the skin of a destination. Of course we all want to see the Taj Mahal in India. But imagine then heading to a remote Rajasthani village and learning about rural life while in the company of locals. Seeing the famous sites is a must, but it’s often the memory of wandering through a small village or sharing dinner with a local family that will leave a lasting impact.

We promise to share our knowledge and expertise with you, and ensure you will come home with stories you will tell for years to come.

Accommodation

Guides
KILIMANJARO CLIMB: This trip is led by experienced guides, with a minimum of 1 guide to every 2 climbers. Sufficient porters are employed to carry the group’s equipment.
Requirements
Our highest physical rating. Get ready for a heart-pumping adventure with plenty of challenges and some extreme conditions. You'll be required to be seriously fit for this trip as difficult activities are included. ,
Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is compulsory for all our trips. We require that, at a minimum, you are covered for medical expenses including emergency repatriation. We strongly recommend that the policy also covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage and personal effects. When travelling on a trip, you won't be permitted to join the group until evidence of travel insurance and the insurance company's 24 hour emergency contact number has been seen by your leader. If you have credit card insurance your group leader will require details of the participating insurer/underwriter, the level of coverage, policy number and emergency contact number rather than the bank's name and credit card details. Please contact your bank for these details prior to arriving in-country. Please go to our website for links to various travel insurance providers:
Visa requirements
Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveller. The visa requirements for your trip vary depending on where you are from and where you are going. As a general rule most countries expect that you will have at least 6 months' validity on your passport. On arrival visitors may be asked to present return tickets and evidence of means to cover your intended stay. We keep the following information up to date as much as possible, but rules do change - it's important that you check for yourself. Residents from other countries must consult the relevant embassies or your travel agent.
Health & Safety
Many national governments provide a regularly updated advice service on safety issues involved with international travel. We recommend that you check your government's advice for their latest travel information before departure and ensure that your travel insurance covers you for all areas your itinerary covers. Please refer to our website's safety page for links to major travel advisories and updates on safety issues affecting our trip. We strongly recommend the use of a neck wallet or money belt while travelling, for the safe-keeping of your passport, air tickets, cash and other valuable items. Leave your valuable jewellery at home - you won't need it while travelling. Many of our hotels have safety deposit boxes, which is the most secure way of storing your valuables. A lock is recommended for securing your luggage. Your leader will accompany you on all included activities, however during your trip you'll have some free time to pursue your own interests, relax and take it easy or explore at your leisure. While your leader will assist you with the available options in a given location, please note that any optional activities you undertake are not part of your Intrepid itinerary, and Intrepid makes no representations about the safety of the activity or the standard of the operators running them. Please use your own good judgement when selecting an activity in your free time. Please also note that your Leader has the authority to amend or cancel any part of the trip itinerary if it's deemed necessary due to safety concerns. For more details on the type of conditions and safety standards you can expect on your trip, please refer to Intrepid's operational safety policy on our website. We recommend that you take a moment to read through this information before travelling, and would appreciate any feedback on how well it's being implemented in the field: FIRE PRECAUTIONS: Please be aware that local laws governing tourism facilities in this region differ from those in your home country and not all the accommodation which we use has a fire exit, fire extinguishers or smoke alarms. PETTY THEFT AND PERSONAL SAFETY: While travelling there is always the risk of pick-pocketing and petty theft, particularly in the more touristy cities. We recommend that you exercise caution when walking alone at night and encourage you to walk together and only on main, well-lit thoroughfares. Be particularly vigilant on public transport. Simple measures like carrying your day pack on your front, not hanging your bag over the back of your chair or on the floor and wearing a money belt will reduce any chance that your valuables should go missing.

Style descriptions

Comfort is your style of travel if you want the whole grassroots experience with more inclusions, meals and creature comforts. While accommodation is predominantly tourist class (3-4 star), on some itineraries there is the opportunity to stay with a local family, spend the night on a train or camp out in exotic places (without putting up your own tent of course). Along the way, you'll really experience the destination up close. You'll mingle with locals, enjoy a taste of their way of life and gain special insights from your leader. This is not luxury travel, but real world experiences - just with a softer landing!
