Itinerary
Touch down in China’s massive capital city. Get your bearings and get acquainted with your group in the afternoon. Perhaps head out to sample some tasty street food for dinner.
Enjoy a free morning before hopping on a plane to fly to Pyongyang and into North Korea. Your guides – who will accompany you for the duration of your time here – will meet you at the airport, and your experience here begins with a visit to the Mansudae Grand Monument. Afterwards stop by the Arch of Triumph and then take the afternoon for sightseeing. Enjoy dinner at a restaurant.
Leave the city behind this morning and head to the coniferous green hills of Mount Myohyang. Visit the beautiful Buddhist Pyohon Temple and enjoy a visit to the International Friendship Exhibition as well. Take in the beautiful scenery of this picturesque spot before heading back to Pyongyang in the afternoon. Enjoy a group dinner in the evening.
Limber up – today is the Pyongyang Marathon. Of course, if you’re a non-runner there’s still plenty for you to do on this trip so you’ll either participate in the event or watch a football match that is played while the runners compete. Enjoy lunch after the marathon ...
Head out for a jam-packed day of sightseeing. After breakfast Visit the Revolutionary Martyrs’ Cemetery and pay your respects before cooking lunch at the Chongryu Hotpot Restaurant. Enjoy a tour with a knowledgeable guide at the Victorious Fatherland Liberation War Mu...
Drive to the city of Pyongsong today and explore the Paeksong Revolutionary site, the Pyongsong Textiles Factory and the local Ponghak Brewery. Drive to Kaesong to overnight.
The strip of land designating the demilitarised zone (DMZ) is, despite its name, actually the heaviest militarised border in the world. Visit this fascinating spot and then stop by the abandoned village of Panmunjom. Then, drop into the Koryo Museum to see an amazing Confucian university with over 1,000 artefacts from the Koryo period. Enjoy a traditional lunch before heading back to Pyongyang.
Enjoy your last morning in North Korea before heading back to Chinese territory. Board an overnight train to Beijing in the afternoon.
Your North Korea marathon adventure concludes upon arrival in Beijing – but you could always stay a few extra days to take in as much of this thriving city as you like.

The Intrepid Travel Experience
If you’re looking for adventure, you’ve come to the right place. For the past 25 years, we’ve been taking small groups of travelers on unforgettable trips around the world. What makes them unforgettable? Take a look for yourself and discover the Intrepid experience.
Our travelers have three styles of tour to choose from: Basix, Original and Comfort. Each has a different level of inclusions and accommodation, but all have unforgettable real life experiences as part of the package. Travellers can also choose themed trips, such as Family, Sailing or Food, to suit their interests.
Our group size has an average of just ten travellers, which allows us to get off the beaten track, use local accommodation and transport, and really get to know the culture. It also ensures we are contributing to the local economy; by choosing local suppliers we were able to keep AUD 60 million in local economies in 2012. We’re also working hard to reduce our carbon footprint and were the first in our sector to introduce carbon offset trips. This, along with our many corporate sustainability activities, has meant we’re one of the travel industry’s leaders in responsible travel.
Why Intrepid?
- Small groups - average of 10 people per trip
- Sustainability - pioneers for the industry
- Local leaders - authentic perspectives
- Local transport - get close and personal
- Local accommodation - experience real living
- Intrepid travelers - like-minded companions
History
Intrepid Travel has come a long way since its beginnings in 1989. From two university friends, a typewriter and a kitchen desk, it is now a proud member of The Intrepid Group, taking over 100,000 travelers every year.
Intrepid Travel is part of The Intrepid Group of companies, alongside leading small group adventure companies Peregrine, Urban Adventures and PEAK DMC.
Despite growing into a global business with over 1,000 staff based all over the world and over 800 different trips across every continent, we’ve remained devoted to the same grassroots values and responsible travel philosophies that we had at the very beginning.

On every trip we operate and in every interaction we have with a client, supplier or local, we live our core values everyday:

Style descriptions
Our Original style trips have a great balance of included activities with your group and free time to explore independently. Where we stay ensures we keep our travellers firmly entrenched in a region’s people and culture, and provides them with unique local experiences that benefits the community too. In most locations we stay in simple tourist-class hotels (i.e. 2-3 stars), plus on many trips you'll also get to experience a night with a local family on a homestay or something a little different like a Bedouin camp in the Sahara. Original style trips come with all manner of transport modes and use a mixture of local and private transport. You might find yourself sailing in a dhow in Zanzibar, jumping on a rickshaw in Sri Lanka or sailing on a yacht through the Galapagos. No matter the mode, it's all about minimising our environmental impact and making getting around part of the adventure.
