Itinerary

Day 1 Chicago

Welcome to Chicago, USA, the first official stop on your North American adventure. Kick things off with a welcome meeting at 6 pm at the hotel. If you arrive with time to spare, perhaps explore the Lakefront Trail that connects some of Lake Michigan’s parks and beaches. In the evening, settle into your hotel in downtown Chicago. You’ll be up bright and early tomorrow, but if you’re eager to hit the town you can ask your leader for recommendations on where to grab a slice of the Windy City’s famous deep-dish pizza.

Day 2 Berlin

In the morning the trip starts with a long drive, usually around 7 hours, to the heart of Amish country – Berlin, Ohio. Berlin is part of the largest Amish settlement in the world and travelling here offers a unique opportunity to learn about the traditions and religious beliefs held by those in the community. Depending on the day of the week, you'll visit a local home for a hearty and wholesome dinner, or breakfast tomorrow morning. Dinner consists of homemade bread, baked chicken, vegetables, salad, pie, beverages and more, while breakfast is scrambled eggs, has browns, sausage, cinnamon rolls, homemade bread, fruit slushees, biscuits and sausage gravy! Your hosts are a local family who will dine with you, so you’ll have the chance to learn there is more to being Amish than eschewing technology.

Day 3 Niagara Falls/Toronto

From Amish country to a bustling metropolis, make the drive to Toronto (approximately 6 hours).  On the way, scratch a big one off the bucket list with a visit to Niagara Falls. Take a tour of the falls from dry land before grabbing a raincoat and heading out on an optional ‘Maid of the Mist’ boat ride. There are numerous viewpoints from which you can appreciate the power of this amazing set of falls, but there's no better way to approach them than from the water. This activity is not included in your trip price, but it is highly recommended. Continue to Toronto and spend the night as you wish. Maybe head to a bar for a Canadian Old Fashioned – that’s the classic cocktail made with maple syrup instead of the usual sugar.

Day 4 Toronto

Today, join your leader on an afternoon walking tour through Kensington Market, one of the city’s most colourful and multicultural neighbourhoods. Pound the pavement and experience the history, culture and individuality of the area. The rest of your time today is free, so why not ask your leader for help deciding what to do. Perhaps take in the views from the CN Tower or catch a Blue Jays baseball game (in season). If you feel like dining for a cause, you could grab a few of your fellow travellers and make your way to Hawthorne Food & Drink, a restaurant and social enterprise that offers free training and development to those in search of skills and employment.

Day 5 Ottawa

The Canadian capital awaits, so hit the road for Ottawa (approximately 5 hours). Upon arrival you have the rest of the afternoon to explore this city. Architecture (or politics) enthusiasts may want to check out Parliament Hill, where you can wander over grassy knolls beneath the towering Gothic Revival-style buildings for free. If old buildings and government machinations aren’t your thing, another option is the four-block shopping hub that makes up the ByWard Market. Food stalls, cafes and restaurants aplenty are on offer in this busy square. Be aware that as one of Ottawa’s biggest tourist attractions, the market is busy all day, every day. Around CAD 20 will gain you entrance to the Canadian Museum of History, a great place to brush up on (or discover) local sagas and past events. The First Peoples Hall is a great place to start, as it explores the endurance and history of the First Nations, Metis and Inuit people.

Day 6 Montreal

Bonjour! Make the 2-hour drive to Montreal. Get your bearings in historic Old Montreal with a walking tour led by your leader and take in treasures such as the famous Notre-Dame Basilica, a Gothic Revival-style church with a luminous interior. The evening is free for exploring this compact city at leisure. Promise you won’t leave without trying poutine, a Quebec staple dish of French fries topped with cheese curds and gravy. Ask your leader for advice on where to find the best version.

Day 7 Montreal

Today is a free day in Montreal. The old town is a must-see and rambling the cobblestone streets is a great way to spend a couple of hours. For lunch perhaps try the famous pastrami sandwiches at Schwarz's Deli, or relax over a long brunch at Beauty's Luncheonette. If you're feeling active, hike up Mont Royal and capture the cityscape from the Kondiaronk Lookout. Tonight, possibly head to O. Noir restaurant for dinner. Staffed by blind waiters, diners eat in complete darkness and part of the profits from the restaurant goes to support local associations.

Day 8 Stowe

In the morning, head south and back across the border into the USA on your way to Stowe (approximately 3 hours). Stop en route at the picturesque Lake Champlain to stretch your legs. A bit further down the road is the Ben and Jerry's Factory, where you'll take a tour and try some ice cream. Depending on time and traffic, you may also stop at a chocolate factory, a cheesemaker's or a maple syrup farm before arriving into the archetypal Vermont mountain town of Stowe. Here you have a free afternoon and evening to explore your surrounds.

Day 9 Stowe

Enjoy a free day in Stowe to soak up the fresh New England air. There are no activities planned, but you can pick and choose from a range of optional activities. Chat to your leader about a trip to the Von Trapp Family Lodge (once home to the family made famous by The Sound of Music), a gondola ride to the top of Mt Mansfield or a short hike in the Green Mountains.

Day 10 New York

If you can make it there, you’ll make it anywhere, and make it there you will (after a 5- to 6-hour drive). Arrive in the late afternoon and begin exploring NYC. With an included Metrocard in hand and some guidance from your leader, you'll be set to take a bite from the Big Apple with the evening free to do as you wish. If you’ve got the energy, why not embrace the madness of Times Square and have a wander with a New York slice in hand?

Day 11 New York

Your trip comes to an end today with no scheduled activities on the books. If you’re staying on in New York, why not get under the city’s skin with an Urban Adventure. Find out more at www.urbanadventures.com/destination/new-york-tours. If you’re looking for a sedate way to ease into life in NYC, perhaps one of the city’s many museums is more up your alley. Both the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art (don’t get them confused!) are worth the cover charge.

Travelling around North America and Canada with Intrepid Travel was a hugely enjoyable experience. Our guide was essentially to the successful flow of the trip melding the group together and communicating great enthusiasm. When I lost my bag our guide arranged for it to be Fedexed to the next hotel and it arrived on time with all of the contents still I place. A great experience.

Intrepid Travel was an amazing experience. Very relaxed yet professional. Our guide Brandon was excellent. The rooms were more than I expected. I'd recommend doing an Intrepid tour. And I'd do another one if I was travelling on my own again.

Planes, trains, buses... and a felucca !

My trip started in Cairo at the Pharaoh's Hotel. The hotel is just one block from the river Nile with lots of lovely cafes and restaurants lined along the boardwalk. The area is picturesque and a great place to begin my Egyptian adventure!
I met up with my group and we had a briefing from our local guide, Hassaan. The meeting was a great opportunity to get to know my fellow travellers and Hassaan gave us all the essential information on our tour, including teaching us all a few words of Arabic.

This was my third trip to Egypt and my most enjoyable. Previously, I had been on a diving boat from Hurghada and also in the beach resort of Sharm El Sheikh. Both were beautiful but it was easy to miss the depth of culture and history that exists inland along the Nile.

Don’t leave Cairo without sampling some delicious baklava and of course Koshary! The Hotel Baron have a fabulous pastry shop and sell all types of baklava and chocolates, not to mention Giant Ferrero Rocher's, mouthwatering !

This was an unforgettable holiday and for sure I will return to Egypt, only for longer the next time.
Top Tips
• Don’t forget insect repellant for your overnight Felucca trip
• Make a stop at the Off License for your alcoholic beverages. Wine or beer are not widely available but there is no problem to bring your own into the restaurants and enjoy on the train journey.
• Check out the delicious baklava in Simonds and coffee from Abu Auf
• Cairo drivers are crazy, no traffic lights, no rules - beware!

Where do I start? The whole Egypt experience with Intrepid was superb from beginning to end. We were met at the airport by an Intrepid representative who took hold of our travel documents and whisked us through the airport formalities like we were VIP's. We were waiting for our bags whilst most of the people on our flight were queuing for entry stamps. Bags collected, the representative went with us to the waiting transfer vehicle and accompanied us through the busy Cairo rush hour traffic to our hotel. We'd paid for an pre-night and it would have been nice to have had one of the better "balcony" rooms, but that's a lesson learned for next time - ask first! We met Ramy Hamdy, our guide and the other 6 people in our group the following day. Ramy would be by our side for the whole of the week's tour, and for 2 western blonde women, that was very reassuring. He was practising Ramadan whilst with us, and we felt very guilty at mealtimes, eating whilst he sat watching us. It would have been easy for him to have excused himself whilst we ate, but he made sure we were all OK and had everything we needed. The excursions were well paced in what was quite a hectic tour, but we covered everything you want to do in Egypt, and more. We really felt that we were part of the country, not just visiting it, and Ramy had a lot to do with that. His knowledge, was second to none and he was able to give us insights into the workings of the country that only a resident would know. The "off the beaten track" activities really made this holiday - 24hrs chillaxing on a felucca, sleeping in the middle of The Nile, a visit to a traditional Nubian village and Break fast meal with a resident family there who'd cooked up a real feast, henna tattoos done by the lady of the house, another lunch up a backstreet in the Luxor suburbs that just no-one else would find, camel rides, hot air balloons, the sleeper train too, all experiences to be remembered for a very long time. We left, as we arrived, with personal attention from an Intrepid representative who, again, whisked us through the airport for our flight home. This was the first time we travelled with Intrepid, and there's another trip already booked to look forward to. There's no reason for us to look to another Company for our travel abroad - Intrepid has it all in bucketloads.

This was me and husband's third Intrepid tour (first was India, second was Iceland) We so enjoy the immediate friends made within small groups like this and also the knowledgeable guides in countries we are not familiar with. Our tour guide - Ivance was so much fun. She went above and beyond as a tour guide. Responded to late night issues, assisting with finding activities on free days, and creating a celebration for one of the people on our trip for their birthday. All restaurant recommendations were top notch.
There was a slight mix up with our transport when arriving in Dubrovnik. Our flight was delayed, cancelled, and while I was able to communicate the change in itinerary we somehow still missed our ride. However, after emailing Intrepid and explaining we tried to call the emergency number, they reimbursed us for our payment for the transfer as well as the taxi we ended up having to take. This was our first time to the Balkans and were were so happy that we had the most amazing group and tour guide. This was our first big trip since 2018 (due to covid) and we could not have chosen a better one.

Guides

Your leader will provide basic information about the sights and cities you'll be visiting but please note that our leaders are not 'tour guides' in the traditional sense. They are adventure travel specialists and are there to organise your trip, arrange activities and help with questions or problems you may have while on your tour. Your leader will provide you with all the important information you need to embark on your own explorations. They are also responsible for driving the van and navigating across the country. The allowable driving times for drivers is strictly controlled in North America. This ensures our drivers are well rested and are not over-tired from too many hours on the roads. While your group will have a minivan for all included activities on the trip, please note that the services of the van and the driver may not be available for your use during free time, or after you have arrived for the day. If you need a special trip into town you may need to arrange transport or a taxi. We endeavour to provide the services of an experienced leader however, situations may arise where your leader is new to a particular region or training other group leaders. It's strictly forbidden for non-qualified rangers to present any information about some National Parks in North America, therefore we adopt a system (as requested by the park rangers) where our leader will encourage travellers to visit the information centres in the National Parks for details about the site. We have designed our trips to make the most of your time in the States, but please understand that there are certain times during each day that your leader will need to be off duty from work. This includes having meal and rest periods and personal time. Your leader will provide you with all the important information you need to embark on your own explorations.
