Short Description

Join Intrepid on a special journey to Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Kenya, to spend time with the last remaining northern white rhinos in existence. The magnificence of the species is undeniable, and this 7-day journey offers the rare opportunity to see up close not only these endangered beasts but also their black and southern white counterparts out in the wild. It’s an adventure defined by epic African landscapes (Lake Nakuru and the Great Rift Valley), stunning birdlife and big game, and stories of real change through wildlife conservation and local social enterprise. The time to travel to Kenya is now.

Itinerary

Day 1 Nairobi

Welcome to Nairobi. You will be met and transferred to your hotel by our representative (approximately 45 minutes’ drive). The remainder of the day will be at your leisure, with optional activities available. There will be a welcome meeting at 4pm. Dinner is included this evening, so head out on the town and enjoy a taste of what Nairobi has to offer. There's also a presentation from the East Africa Wildlife Society on the work they do and how your donation through this trip helps their cause. For more information on the optional Urban Adventures check out https://www.urbanadventures.com/destination/nairobi-tours

Day 2 Ol Pejeta Conservancy

After breakfast at the hotel, check out and drive to Ol Pejeta. After settling into your camp there, enjoy some lunch. In the afternoon, it's time to visit the Ol Pejeta Conservancy and witness the last northern white rhinos. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity to see these rare beasts and hear their dedicated keepers tell their story. The 700-acre endangered species enclosure also protects small populations of Grevy’s zebra and Jackson’s hartebeest. The greater rhino sanctuary spans some 24,000 acres – typical savannah grasslands interrupted by whistling thorn shrubs, acacia trees and lush green vegetation along The Uaso Nyiro River. Here giraffe, zebra, eland, oryx, waterbuck, grants gazelle, Thompson’s gazelle, elephant, buffalo, silver backed jackal, ostrich, hartebeest, baboon, lion, hippo, and rhino roam free. There are also several bird species to observe – among them the Mairbou stork, African spoonbill and African hawk-eagle.

Day 3 Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Set off on a full day game drive at Ol Pejeta Conservancy. As well as the northern white rhinos, the conservancy plays host to 114 black rhinos and a significant population of southern white rhinos (whose population was, in a huge feat of collective conservation, boosted from less than 50 in the 19th century to the 20,000 or more that roam Africa today). The park is also home to cheetahs, jackals, a small number of African wild dogs and countless other game. Today there's the option of visiting Morani Information centre for the chance to learn about more about the wildlife in the area and get comprehensive information on how a modern wildlife conservancy works.

Day 4 Lake Nakuru National Park

Head to Lake Nakuru via Thomson Falls, enjoying some incredibly scenic views along the way. We arrive in time for lunch at the lodge. Proceed to Lake Nakuru Park and check into your lodge, which is located inside the park itself. The place is well known in Kenya for its rhino population, with a huge population of southern white and black, to be found in the park. It’s one of the most protected parks in the region, hence the growth in the rhino population. We embark on an afternoon game drive in the park and see how these animals thrive. Over the course of the year the lake changes size considerably, shrinking to its smallest in March at the end of the dry season, and changing the type of birdlife and wildlife that inhabit the area. While changes in water levels and chemical concentration caused the permanent population of flamingos to move elsewhere in the 1970s, the lush area around the lake is still well known for its birdlife.

Day 5 Lake Nakuru National Park

Enjoy a full day of exploring Lake Nakuru, embarking on morning and afternoon game drives. The lake is situated right in the middle of the Great Rift Valley, one of the most dramatic landscapes in the world. What's even more remarkable than the terrain, however, is the vast breadth of birdlife it attracts. A game drive is a chance to spot waterbuck, warthog, impala, buffalo, cheetah, Rothschild Giraffe, lions, leopards and rhinos (both southern white and black).

Day 6 Nairobi

After an early breakfast, check out of your camp and drive back to Nairobi this morning. Today there will be an interactive tour that introduces you to the resilient women of Kenya. It's a chance to spend time with some inspiring women who are overcoming hardship and turning their lives around, thanks to a unique social enterprise known as One Horizon Africa. It's about education and empowerment through vocational and lifestyle training, imbuing local women with a sense of independence and control over their lives.

Day 7 Nairobi

The adventure comes to an end after breakfast this morning.

INTREPID is a company I use regularly as a vehicle for exploring the world and my most recent edifying experience was a 12 day visit to Egypt. The itinerary covered Cairo, Luxor and Aswan by road, rail and a boat on the Nile. Egypt is a country rich in history and unique landscapes and this trip provided an opportunity to feel immersed in a way that wilĺ leave an indelible memory of the vistas and unique artefacts. In addition interaction with local people and an excellent Egyptian guide made the experience interactive so that I gained an intimate experience of the country that more circumscribed trips cannot provide.

I recently travelled on a Premium Intrepid trip to Uzbekistan. I was pleasantly surprised by the comfort level of the accommodation. It was a wonderful trip with like minded travellers from different parts of the world. Our guide Lorba was passionate about sharing the history of her country and religion. She was also skilled at reading the mood of the group and adjusting our itinerary as necessary.
I was excited to visit a country on the Silk Road and it exceeded my expectations.

I chose to use Intrepid due to a highly positive recommendation by a friend's wife who used them years ago.
My destination was Egypt, but they also handled my flights to Botswana prior to the tour as well.
All flights went like clockwork and the tour was terrific.
The sites were amazing, but our guide's affable demeanor and extensive knowledge ensured that every step of the way was both educational and enjoyable. Moreover, he extended his support beyond the tour, tracking our well-being until we safely returned to our respective countries which added an extra layer of depth to the journey.
I will be most definitely be using Intrepid again and can highly recommend.

My review would be five stars plus, except for the failure to warn travelers in a timely manner about the poison apple trees, which I stood under barefooted for ten minutes and which cause a quick and painful death in the consumption of even a single tiny apple...
The certified guide in the Galapagos on day two of our trip told me that recently a tourist couple without permits ate the apples and quickly died a painful death..so Intrepid needs to warn its customers that even touching the apple or the tree itself triggers a painful rash or worse...

First Intrepid Madagascar tour of 2023--and it was fantastic! Wonderful guide (Bruno), lots of lemurs and hiking and incredible landscapes. Started on the beach with sailing in a pirogue (and starfish diving), baobab arboretums, plus a hike through rice fields, lunches hosted by local villagers, visit to silk weavers and paper-making workshop and aluminum casters and marquetry crafters.... what didn't we do in 2 weeks?! Eye-opening experiences, in one of the last pristinely natural places on earth.

This trip was amazing. I had been looking forward to it for almost 3 years, and it exceeded my expectations! Vietnam is an incredible country, and this trip gave me a hunger to come back for more. Our guide, Thán, was wonderful. He couldn't do enough for us and was always 'on the clock'. Very knowledgeable and passionate about his job. This was an amazing, unforgettable experience.

Guides

On this trip you will be accompanied by two crew members, a Group Leader and a Driver. Your Intrepid Group Leader’s role involves organizing the overall operation and smooth-running of the trip, managing trip logistics and providing the group with information. Your Group Leader will work towards making the trip as safe and enjoyable as possible for all travellers. Intrepid trips are built around the co–operation and participation of all the group members under the supervision of the group leader. While not being guides in the traditional sense you can expect them to have a broad general knowledge of the countries visited on the trip, including historical, cultural, religious and social aspects. We also use local guides where we think more specific knowledge will add to the enjoyment of the places we are visiting, especially when tracking and identifying game - we think it's the best of both worlds. Our Group Leaders are chosen for their leadership skills and are wonderful ambassadors for our company and our beautiful continent and its people. Your Driver’s main responsibility is to get you to your destination safely; they are also responsible for the maintenance of the vehicles along the way. We endeavour to provide the services of an experienced leader and driver; however, situations may arise where your leader is new to a particular region or training other group leaders.
