Getting tongue-tied? Relax and get your tongue around ‘Ouaga’ instead. Once the capital of the Mossi empire, Ouaga is the character-packed capital of Burkina Faso. Chaotic but charming, the city is renowned for its vibrant nightlife and friendly locals. Pop your dancing shoes on and hit the town!
The capital of the Bobo tribe, Bobo-Dioulasso moves to the beat of the drum. One of the most vibrant small cities in West Africa, Bobo hosts a music scene that will have you out all night. Don’t forget to pay a visit to the city’s market – a great place to buy the unique masks crafted in the region.
Head south-west to Banfora, near the Ivory Coast border. Explore the stunning sandstone hills and fantastic rock formations that surround the city, before heading out to picturesque Lake Tengréla for some bird watching and hippo spotting.
Travel out to Gauoa in the heart of Lobi country and discover the magic of this remote rural area. Admire the unique mud-brick dwellings of the local people and the ancient stone ruins of Loropéni.
Return to Ouagadougou and visit the local cultural centre. Maybe take the opportunity to buy some souvenirs - the intricate carvings and brass work on offer are crafted locally. The following day, trip out to the village of Tiebele. Best known for its unique architect...
Cross the border into Benin, the birthplace of voodoo. Considered the country’s national religion, voodoo has a strong spiritual emphasis. Voodoo talismans – certain inanimate objects said to have healing properties (such as animal heads and skins) are commonly stocked at marketplaces. En route to Benin, visit the Fulani village of Tintangou and enjoy a picnic lunch.
Experience a thrilling safari drive through Pendjari National Park. Keep your eyes peeled and your ears tuned for elephants, West African lions, hippos, buffalo and antelopes. Sadly, these are some of the last populations of big game in West Africa.
Wake with the birds for an early morning game drive before heading out to the pretty Tanougou Falls for an invigorating swim. Later, visit the remote and beautiful Betamaribe people whose culture and traditions have endured through the ages.
Venture out on a two-hour trek up Dassa Hill to meet the High Priest and observe the voodoo altars and shrines. Later, visit the Church of Dassa – a pilgrimage for many Christians in West Africa.
Head south to Abomey, the ancient capital of the Dahomey Kingdom. Explore some of the original Dahomeyan palaces and temples, and visit the restored Royal Palace. The Musée Historique d’Abomey is worth a visit too. Later, watch the local Yoroba and Fon people perform the unique Geleden Masked Dance (Dance Geleden des Fons). This is a real highlight of the tour.
Continue on to Ganvie and take a lake trip in a traditional 'pirogue' (dugout canoe) - the vessel of choice for West African fishermen - before a delightful evening of song and dance.
Travel to the township of Ouidah, the epicentre of voodooism. Learn all about this unique religion at the Musée d’histoire d’Ouidah – it's not as sinister nor as sordid as Hollywood might have you believe.
With its strong voodoo influence, the historic town of Togoville is the perfect place to meander around fetish street stalls and pick up a talisman or two. The markets are even more epic in Togo’s capital of Lomé – discover the remarkable supplies used by sorcerers in traditional medicine: monkey skulls, warthog teeth, snake skins and dried birds.
This adventure ends in the sunny capital of Ghana, famous for its collection of terrific beaches. The city is also home to the National Museum. Why not step inside and learn all about Ghana’s journey to independence?

Tour Operator
It’s been more than 36 years since our first small group set out to discover Nepal. It’s this heritage and our reputation that keeps travellers coming back time and time again.
We appeal to the well-travelled, discerning traveller. The one who chooses value over price, and wants to immerse themselves in a place instead of just ticking landmarks off a bucket list. The type of person who would rather stay in a family run B&B built in a 16th century Venetian convent than a forgettable hotel. We’re for travellers who want inclusions along the way instead of fiddling around for loose change.
Almost 20 years ago, Peregrine led an industry revolution by solely employing locally born leaders. This innovative approach gives our travellers a deeper insight into the countries they visit. Doorways are opened and a true understanding of the place is fostered.
At Peregrine, we travel in intimate groups and take the time to get under the skin of a destination. Of course we all want to see the Taj Mahal in India. But imagine then heading to a remote Rajasthani village and learning about rural life while in the company of locals. Seeing the famous sites is a must, but it’s often the memory of wandering through a small village or sharing dinner with a local family that will leave a lasting impact.
We promise to share our knowledge and expertise with you, and ensure you will come home with stories you will tell for years to come.

Style descriptions
Comfort is your style of travel if you want the whole grassroots experience with more inclusions, meals and creature comforts. While accommodation is predominantly tourist class (3-4 star), on some itineraries there is the opportunity to stay with a local family, spend the night on a train or camp out in exotic places (without putting up your own tent of course). Along the way, you'll really experience the destination up close. You'll mingle with locals, enjoy a taste of their way of life and gain special insights from your leader. This is not luxury travel, but real world experiences - just with a softer landing!
