What travelers are saying

"I did the EBC trek with Intrepid in September and October. Our group missed the first 3 days of the planned 12 day trek due to bad weather. There was a real fear we would not be able to do the trek at all. Intrepid sorted out additional accommodation and flights once we were able to fly. Our group made it to EBC by missing the 2 acclimation days on the accent and descending in 3 days instead of 4. This was only possible because of the awesome staff (guides and porters) employed by Intrepid and by Intrepid's backroom staff making alternative accommodation and flight arrangements for us."

What travelers are saying

"We booked a National Geographic expedition Holland and Belgium by River. The promotional literature promised a 14-day deposit refund window. The “invoice” was marked “non-refundable” deposit. We completed the National Geographic Traveler Information. About 8 days later we received the “Travel Agreement” to be signed. We both approved and signed the National Geographic documents. A Cruise Line Travel agreement was enclosed but had no signature line. This document contained language which was unacceptable. We submitted the signed NatGeo documents. The following day we canceled the trip due to the unacceptable Cruise Line language. Cancellation was made 12 days after booking and no deposit was returned. We were told on the phone that the refund deadline was triggered by the 14 day window OR signatures on the Travel Agreement which ever came first. This was NEW information. To date, we have received NO refund of our $1000. We cancelled our trip within the advertised 14 day window."

What travelers are saying

"We have just returned from a 10 night Cambodian Experience tour with Insider Journeys from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap. The tour provided an excellent overview of the country, people and culture as well as a range of experiences including tuk tuks, boat trips, cyclos, temples, pagodas and of course outstanding food experiences and tasting. Accommodation was always comfortable and clean and transport well maintained. Each day was different from the last, covering from the stark reality of the killing fields to the magnificent Angkor Wat. Free time was available for exploring as well. Our guide Virak was knowlegeable, friendly, accommodating and passionate about his country and contributed greatly to our overall positive experience. The highlights of course were Angkor Wat and the nearby temples, the home stay experience, the Cambodian people and of course the delicious food. If you want to see a broad cross section of Cambodia this tour is a great choice."

Great Wall of China Tour Selection Trips

  • There are several sites along the Great Wall. All are all worth seeing but depending on your preferences you may want to focus on only a couple instead of trying to see everything in one go:
  • Badaling is a two hour drive from Beijing and is the most popular section for tourists (often the most crowded)
  • Mutianyu is a two hour drive from Beijing and the most restored part of the wall
  • Jinshanling is a two to three hour drive from Beijing and is the most popular full-day hiking route with half the route in ruins
  • Jiankou is a three hour drive from Beijing and is the most challenging and extreme route for hikers
  • Simatai is a two to three hour drive from Beijing and is the most well-known for its architectural significance and became a World Heritage Site in 1987
  • Juyongguan is closest to Beijing (about 1.5 hour drive) and one of the wall’s greatest forts to defend the ancient city
  • Shanhai Pass is a 3.5 drive from Beijing, located in Hebei province, and is where the Great Wall meets the sea.
  • Most guided tours of the individual sites/sections take half a day to a full day, so planning to hit multiple sections in one day may be too ambitious.
  • Hiking along parts of the wall can be quite strenuous with a countless number of steps and average elevation gain of anywhere from 600 to 800 feet. Cable car rides are available for Badaling, Mutianyu, Jinshanling, and Simatai for those who wish to experience the wall without a strenuous trek.
  • The most popular times to visit are in the summer, with average highs around 86° F, and the fall with average highs from 46 to 64° F. Visitor counts during peak seasons can reach up to 70,000 people per day.
  • Bring plenty of water, snacks, and sunscreen, and dress in layers. The further you trek along the wall away from the base, the fewer the vendors along the way to supply refreshments.
