Singapore, Southeast Asia’s economic powerhouse and melting pot of religions, languages and cultures, proves to be one of the must-visit destinations especially now that it is celebrating its 50th anniversary. This relatively tiny city-state offers a wide range of unique travel experiences to cater for different travel styles.

Singapore has long been known as one of the major gateways to Asia. Changi Airport, the undisputed world champion when it comes to airports, connects Southeast Asia with the rest of the world. Many travelers might think of Singapore as just a pit stop and not their actual destination. However, a fascinating city-state awaits, begging to be explored.

SG50 in a Nutshell

Singapore is the perfect example of a nation that preserves heritage and, at the same time, embraces modernity. Much of its unique blend of influences is attributed to its colorful historical past. “Singapore” was derived from the Malay word singapura, meaning “lion city”. It was officially founded by Sir Stamford Raffles in the nineteenth century and declared as a British colony. During World War II, it fell into the hands of the Japanese but was soon reclaimed by the Brits.

In the ’50s, Singapore was granted limited self-governance and Lee Kuan Yew was elected as the country’s first prime minister. After less than a decade, the leaders favored a merger with Malaysia for common market and for independence from the British. Due to political and economic issues, Singapore finally separated from Malaysia and gained independence in 1965. This year, (2015) the city-state marks its Golden Jubilee and has even been named Lonely Planet’s 2015 top travel destination.

Where to Stay

Like any other city, Singapore offers a wide range of 4-5 star hotels and even budget hostels. If money is not an issue, the iconic Marina Bay Sands hotel is the obvious choice. That world-class rooftop infinity pool that gives you a spectacular view of the city is hard to beat. Staying in any hotel in the Marina Bay area means getting access to some of the main attractions in Singapore like the Merlion statue, the Singapore Flyer, and Gardens by the Bay.

Traveling in Singapore doesn’t necessarily mean having to spend a fortune for accommodation. Bugis and Little India are also great locations for easy access to the MRT, food hubs, and shopping malls but with more options for budget hotels and hostels.

What to See and Do

Take a food and cultural tour during which you will be able to discover the authentic taste of the city's cuisine as well as its history and culture. Singapore is teeming with affordable hawker centers that guarantee a variety of delicious and hygienic food choices. Some of the local foods you simply can't miss are chill crabs, laksa, satay, roti prata and the most celebrated chicken rice.

A river cruise is a good idea for travelers who want a convenient way to tour the city. Sit back, relax and soak up the sights and atmosphere of the glitzy Marina Bay and get a chance to see the famous landmarks up close like Fullerton Hotel, Esplanade Singapore, The Merlion park, Asian Civilizations Museum and Boat Quay. After a leisurely bumboat ride, hit up the pubs or restaurants along Clarke Quay, a very vibrant and happening nightlife strip around the area.

Be sure to spend a day or two of adventure and fun in Sentosa Island. It has something for everyone, from theme parks to beaches. Try the exciting rides and attractions inside the Universal Studios with friends or the whole family or go beach hopping from Siloso Beach to Palawan Beach to Tanjong Beach. For a more adventurous day trip, explore the different side of Singapore by booking a tour to Pulau Ubin. Go on a nature trail or take a boat for a fresh respite from the mainland.

It’s true that Singapore laws are strict but in exchange, you have a visibly clean and safe country. Walking the streets late at night is no cause for concern since criminal activity is virtually unheard of. Travelers can rest assured to have a pleasant trip. For a more hassle-free Singapore experience, let Stride help you find the perfect tour and travel services for your budget and needs.
