Editor’s Take
Most trip reviews tend to focus on some or all of these 5 key areas, not all of which may be relevant to you: the tour guide, travel company, service level, country or countries traveled in, and the trip itinerary. Remember, just because you see a 1 star review doesn’t necessarily mean that person disliked the country.
Visitors to Cinque Terre are looking for a wonder-filled trip of visiting cliffside towns, stunning views, and an abundant food culture.
Positive reviews highlight the tour guides for the guided tours of Cinque Terre and the surrounding area. Tour guides that went out of their way to provide food suggestions, give detailed historical accounts, and were approachable and personal made the tours unforgettable.
Visitors also enjoyed the guided wine and food tours of the region as Cinque Terre is known for its seafood and vast vineyards. Another favorite among travelers was when tours combined both day trips to the hotspots of Cinque Terre, but also cities outside of the five main villages, like Portofino.
The main thrill for most travelers to Cinque Terre are the trails that crisscross across the region. These trails wind their way through vineyards, next to sheer cliffs, and through the many olive trees that are scattered across the Parco Nazionale delle Cinque Terre.
Unfavorable reviews may come from the underestimation of walking that is involved when visiting Cinque Terre. The villages of Cinque Terre are built into the Ligurian coastline which features very rocky and steep terrain with many 200-meter ascents and descents. Travelers who are not used to hiking 7-8 miles a day may find the trails difficult.
Cinque Terre is one of the top destinations in all of Northern Italy. This means the cities will be busy during most of the year and the villages in Cinque Terre are small, which means the villages will be crowded. However, there is a reason these cities are at the top of many travelers Italian bucket lists, they are worth the crowds.
With Cinque Terre’s Mediterranean climate, the months between April and October will be very warm. It is best to remember to pack plenty of water and make sure you do some training before hiking the Cinque Terre Trails. Don’t underestimate Northern Italian weather, it can vary throughout the day so its best to bring layers with you when you are hiking.
With Cinque Terre being a popular tourist destination, the cost to visit will be higher than other areas in Italy. It is recommended to budget more for Cinque Terre because some of the meals can cost over 20 euros and most tour itineraries include free days that allow you to see attractions that are not included in your trip.
