Antigua City Tour Selection Trips
- One of the most popular things to do in Antigua is hike one of the surrounding volcanoes to get a panoramic view of the surrounding jungle and city. There are multiple volcanoes, however, so you should decide ahead of time which one to hike -- they vary significantly in the intensity of the climb, and how long the hike will take!
- While Antigua is one of the safest cities in Guatemala, you should be aware that there are still some chance of petty theft on your trip. Be aware of this if you plan on going out to bars and clubs at night (Antigua is known for its nightlife!), in particular.
- Antigua may be a beautiful city, but it is not known for being a particularly luxurious travel location. If you like to travel in style, or want a more pampered experience of Antigua, be sure to check out and book your luxury or premium tour in advance -- there are not many tours offering luxury accommodation, so they may fill up quickly!

Weather in Guatemala is consistent year-round, with very little variation. At the peak of daytime, temperatures average at around the mid-70’s Fahrenheit (low-20’s for Celsius), and drop to an average low in the mid 60’s Fahrenheit (high teens Celsius) at night. The warmest months are April and May, and the coolest time of year happens between December to February.
Humidity in Guatemala is mild year-round, though the highest chances of precipitation occur between the months between June to September, so consider carrying a light poncho with you if you vacation in Antigua during this time, or even bring a rain jacket along.
Is it safe to travel in Antigua?
The United States government does have Level 3 Travel Advisory in place for visiting Guatemala, due to the threat of violent crime that happens in some of larger cities, particularly Guatemala City. However, Antigua is one of the safest cities in Guatemala, and still frequented by tourists -- including solo travelers, young travelers (it is a popular immersion destination for high school and college students learning Spanish), and families.
With this being said, one should still exercise relative caution in the city, remaining aware of your surroundings and taking necessary precautions, such as not carrying all of your cash and passport with you, or wear flashy jewelry when walking around the city.
Other things to be aware of is it is generally not advised to walk the Cerro de la Cruz or climb the volcanoes alone. The area around Volcano Agua is also known to be unsafe, so if you want to hike a volcano, consider doing the much more popular Pacaya and Acatenango climbs. If you have to travel through the city center at night, you should also take a taxi.
Going on a guided tour of Antigua will ease some of these issues, as you will never be alone and your guide will make sure you are not entering any dangerous situations.

Antigua used to be one of the largest and most popular cities in Guatemala in the 16th century. Unfortunately, most of it was destroyed in 1773 during a powerful earthquake, and many people moved to what is now Guatemala City. That is how Antigua Guatemala gets its name, “Old Guatemala” refers to it being the old Guatemala City.
Many old religious buildings in Antigua, particularly the old monasteries, convents, and churches, remain in their ruinous state from the 1773 earthquake and have not been repaired. With this being said, they are still in tact enough to appreciate the old architectural style, and are popular historic sightseeing sites.
The currency used in Antigua (as well as the rest of Guatemala) is the Quetzal, which is named after the country’s national bird, a colorful bird of paradise called the Resplendent Quetzal.
Antigua is one of three UNESCO World Heritage sites in Guatemala. The other two are Tikal National Park, and the Archaeological Park and Ruins of Quirigua.
One of the best places in Guatemala to see an actual lava flow is the Pacaya Volcano, which is the volcano closest to Antigua. If you are lucky, you may even see one of the three active (there are four volcanoes, one is dormant) volcanoes around Antigua undergo a small eruption at night!
