What travelers are saying

"I did the EBC trek with Intrepid in September and October. Our group missed the first 3 days of the planned 12 day trek due to bad weather. There was a real fear we would not be able to do the trek at all. Intrepid sorted out additional accommodation and flights once we were able to fly. Our group made it to EBC by missing the 2 acclimation days on the accent and descending in 3 days instead of 4. This was only possible because of the awesome staff (guides and porters) employed by Intrepid and by Intrepid's backroom staff making alternative accommodation and flight arrangements for us."

What travelers are saying

"Summary over a cruise on the Haute Seine and Yonne on a barge. As seasoned cruisers, knowing well all aspects of cruising on seas and rivers, we had no experience about traveling on a barge in a canal. It was also time to overcome this lack. A number of companies offer this kind of cruising on barge with 8 to 16 passengers, however very often at exorbitant prices. Luckily, we discovered that the company CroisiEurope offers one week cruise on various canals in Europe, at very decent price, especially considering that all is inclusive (full board, all alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and all excursions) on modern barges with a maximum of 22 passengers. We opted for the barge Ms Deborah, which cruises on the canal de la Loire, with the Briare to Nevers’ route. We were looking forward to this itinerary because the proposed excursions particularly suited us. Unfortunately, only a few days before departure, we were informed that due of a lack of water in the Loire canal the Ms Deborah was switched over to the Haute Seine and Yonne for a new itinerary from Paris to Sens. Despites the fact that this new itinerary didn’t really meet our desires, especially the excursions, we decided to accept the change. Our group of 6 persons from Switzerland was very warmly greeted by all members of the crew when arriving on the quai de Grenelle in Paris where we see the MS DEBORAH for the first time, our floating home for the week. With its two dominating colours blue and white, it is difficult not to fall in love with this beautiful small ship. We were invited immediately for the welcome cocktail during which we met officially the crew and the other six individual passengers originating from New Zealand, England and the USA. With less time than it needs to tell, the relation between us was created, so that everyone felt part of a bunch of friends knowing each other for long time. There is no need to present here the MS Deborah itself, as this is already thoroughly done on the Cruise Critic page. The crew of 6 persons is composed of a captain, a sailor, a cruise director, a chef, a waitress and a cabin hostess who put all their efforts to satisfy the passengers and offer them the best possible service. The captain as well as the sailor are always trying to make passengers at ease, answer questions or even bring a drink. The lady cruise director is omnipresent, taking care of the passengers better than a mother hen would do. The talented young French chef aims to produce dishes which please everybody. His outstanding sauces and excellent desserts should be particularly praised. However, referring to comments we made during a cruise on the Seine Princess two years ago, we cannot understand that why today it is not possible to offer the choice of a light buffet at lunch instead a three or even four course menu! The always smiling and friendly Hungarian waitress was very caring and attentive, without forgetting the cabin hostess doing a great job in the cabins, the public spaces and even the kitchen. It wouldn’t be fair to name a single person as all members of the crew, without any exception, do all they can to make the cruise unforgettable. Our one-week cruise on the barge Ms Deborah enables us today to make the following comments: ~ a cruise on a barge cannot be compared to any other kind of cruise ~ despite all the comfort offered on modern barge, one must be very aware that life on board happens at a restraint space, requiring therefore much flexibility and understanding in all aspects from all passengers ~ in our case, being only 12 passengers, we had the opportunity to take our meals on the terrace. We also never had the feeling that the boat was overcrowded. This can be different when the ship is full, especially by bad weather ~ the state of mind between the passengers who are mostly of foreign nationalities, who don’t know each other and don’t speak French, must function well right from the beginning ~ if the interrelation works, it is difficult to find a more relaxing and enjoyable way of travelling ~ the success on a barge is mainly due on the quality of its crew. Ms Deborah’s crew members have quickly created a family spirit on board, showing also that they genuinely like what they do ~ excursions can play a major role in choosing an itinerary. Not speaking French or English can be a handicap Do we recommend to do a cruise on a barge? Yes, definitively! It’s affordable, the atmosphere on board is unique, the routes can be very interesting. In our case, this second try with CroisiEurope gives them a better note."

What travelers are saying

"The trip was absolutely incredible! As an Aussie, I was excited to explore parts of my own country I hadn’t visited before, and it turned out to be such a rewarding experience. I learned so much, particularly about First Nations culture, which was a major highlight for me. Some activities that I initially didn’t expect to enjoy ended up being surprisingly memorable. For instance, I’ve always disliked art classes because of my perfectionist tendencies, but the included Aboriginal art class ended up being one of the standout moments of the trip. If you’re considering this trip, my advice is to go in with an open mind. Push yourself to try new things—you’re unlikely to get another opportunity like this—but also remember to pace yourself. It’s just as important to schedule downtime to rest and recharge so you can fully enjoy the experience. The people in my Contiki group were absolutely amazing, which added so much to the trip. I do wish there were more days spent in Byron Bay, or even an alternative trip focused more on beachy, nature-based destinations rather than city stops—but both aspects of the itinerary had their own appeal. This trip is also fantastic for giving you a sense of which places you’d like to revisit and spend more time exploring in the future. A special shoutout to our trip manager, who was phenomenal and really elevated the whole experience. Her knowledge of plants, history, and culture gave me a deeper appreciation for the places we visited, which made the journey even more meaningful. She was very organised and told us exactly what we needed to know in little amounts so that it wasn't information overload. Overall, it was an unforgettable adventure, and I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat!"

  • Tourism in Bosnia and Herzegovina is relatively undeveloped so set your expectations accordingly; for example, accommodations are generally in the “value” category (vs. “basic” or “premium”), food is excellent but not gourmet, and the region’s infrastructure is not up to par with more heavily touristed destinations. However, the lack of commercialization is what endears many travelers to the region. Speak with your tour company for specific information.
  • No matter the tour you choose, the impact of the war that took place in the early 90s will be evident and sights may be raw for some particularly in Sarajevo; however, resilience, resourcefulness and hope are also plain to see. As well, the coexistence of people with different ethnic backgrounds and religions. Most tour guides have excellent knowledge of the complex history in the region, many with personal experience of the war. Learning about the region will be both eye opening and inspiring.
  • Tours will use buses; otherwise, longer lines at checkpoints, road conditions that may be more hazardous to passenger vehicles and special laws when driving in Bosnia and Herzegovina are to be expected. Roads can be long, bumpy, and windy so if prone to car sickness, take appropriate measures.

Additional details

Are Bosnia & Herzegovina Two Separate Countries?

Although often informally called Bosnia, Bosnia and Herzegovina are not two separate countries but rather, two autonomous entities. Geographically, Bosnia makes up the larger northern region while Herzegovina makes up the smaller southern region.

The political map is drawn differently: the Bosnian entity, called the Bosnian Serb Republic, is located in the north, south and southwestern parts of the country. The Herzegovinian entity, called the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is located in the central and northwestern parts of the country. These entities reflect ethnic divisions between Serbs and Croats.

Nearby Countries

Bosnia Herzegovina is in the Balkan region of southern Europe.

Countries in the Balkan region that are nearby Bosnia and Herzegovina include Albania, Northern Macedonia, Serbia (adjacent to its east), Croatia (adjacent to its north), Bulgaria, Kosovo, Slovenia, Montenegro (adjacent to its south), and Romania.

Similar to regions of the United States there is no widespread agreement on which countries make up the Balkan region and sometimes parts of Turkey and Greece are included. Further complicating designation is that in most recent times the terms Southeastern or Southeast are becoming more common, perhaps because of the political and ethnic upheaval often associated with the Balkan region.

There are three southern peninsulas in Europe. From west to east they are the Iberian Peninsula of Spain and Portugal; the Italian Peninsula and the Balkan Peninsula.

What Language Do They Speak?

The language spoken in Bosnia Herzegovina reflects ethnic, political, religious, geographic, and historic ties as well as no standardization. Bosnian, Serbian and Croatian are the three primary languages, also termed Serbo-Croatian.

In recent years, the term has come to include the Bosnian and Montenegrin languages. While similar and not a hindrance to communication between groups, all are separate languages with their own dialects.

Is English spoken in Bosnia Herzegovina? Many do speak English that’s quite good, especially younger generation Bosnians. As always when traveling to a country with a language different than your own, learning common words and phrases can enrich your experience  - and that of your hosts, too.

What is the Weather Like?

Weather in Bosnia and Herzegovina is mild with variations depending on whether you are close to the Meditteranean, traveling through the plains or more hilly regions. In the Bosnian north, expect the coldest winter temps in January to hover around freezing, while in southern Herzegovina, about 42℉. Summer is a balmy 72℉ on average in Bosnia and about 78℉ in Herzegovina. June, July, August, and September are generally good times to travel to Bosnia Herzegovina weather-wise.

How much does it rain in Bosnia Herzegovina?

It’s always helpful to know whether you need to pack for rainy weather. The northern city of Banja Luka sees about 40 inches per year. Rain is heaviest during the months of October, November, December, and June with average monthly precipitation of about 4 inches.

In the southwestern part of Bosnia Herzegovina, the city of Mostar close to the Meditteranean sees an average of about 57 inches of precipitation per year. The months of October, November, and December are the heaviest with nearly 7, 8, and 9 inches respectively. The average annual precipitation in Sarajevo, situated further north and inland is about 37 inches. There, too, rain is heaviest during the months of October, November, and December.

Do I need a Visa?

Visas for travel to Bosnia and Herzegovina are not required for stays under 3 months. Passports are required and must be valid for three months past your date of departure.

Is it Safe to Travel?

As of the latest U.S. Department of State Travel Advisory in June of 2019, Bosnia and Herzegovina is at Level 2: travelers are advised to exercise increased caution due to terrorism and land mines. Be sure to visit Travel.State.Gov to see what current advisory levels are.

Also, be aware that air quality might be poor, especially in Sarajevo not only because of cigarette smoke but other pollution. What are the roads like in Bosnia Herzegovina? Road conditions can be hazardous; for example, no roadside guardrails and no street lights outside of city centers. There are special laws and papers are required so know before you go. General safety recommendations such as not wearing jewelry and keeping items of value close to your person should be followed.
